Hurrah for Microsoft Paranoia!

I recently found my OLD (and old AMD Socket 462, circa 2000) computer. I took what was functional out of it, and put it into my sisters's computer. The eldest of my two sisters also has been bitching at my to re-install Windows, so I did that when I was at it.

So, it gets to that time where Windows XP SP2 shows you its new features that you already knew about the last time you re-installed Windows. I blast through this, then install the drivers for the wireless usb device. Then I go to register....

I quickly click through the pages, since I have done this enough to memorise what it is going to ask me. Then I get this wonderfull, paraphrased message:
"According to our records, the number of times this serial key can be activated has been exceeded." I proceeds to tell me to enter a different serial key.

I thought, "Isn't this wonderful! Windows is so paranoid about pirating, I would have to buy another copy of XP, if I was ever going to do this legitly again."

What a pain in the ass this is. If Windows was a rock solid OS (it is getting better in this regard), this wouldn't be a problem. Seeing as Windows does need to be reinstalled each season so you can clean up/get rid of your registry, porn, viruses, porn, spyware, adware, porn, Norton, etc.

All you have to do is call MS and get the key unlocked.

Or you could have gone to MS' website and found for the solution to your problem, rather than ranting here.

Phoning them is a pain is an ass sometimes. First a damn fucking robot, and second an outsourced tech support worker. I forgot a phrase that bypasses the robot and directly to a human. It's something like "Take me to a human representative". These tech reps are complete dumbasses btw, just lie to them that it's for one PC and they'll give you that unlock key. :D

You know, in the past 15 years of using Windows (since version 3) the only times I've needed to reinstall it is when I myself mess it up so bad that it's easier to do so than cleaning the mess. Since Windows XP came out that hasn't happened even one time.

I download porn, I play games, I have some beta software installed, and only rarely has it crashed, and every time I can trace that back to some stupid third-party driver or other misbehaving software. And in the few months that I've been using x64 I haven't had a single crash. I also don't use an antivirus and I've never had a problem with viruses or spyware.

Really, if you need to reinstall XP that often I'd look at the user instead of MS.

Part of it the fact that this computer was made within a month of Windows XP being released. A little bloat in the registry or a no longer wanted background process can seriously destroy performance.

Uninstalling from the control panel works very nicely in most cases. Going through the registry manually is no fun, but Registry Cleaner does a nice job finding entries that don't relate to any program currently installed. No need to keep it installed all the time, so you can take it out once you're done with it. The control panel also lets you take a look at what services are installed in your computer and you can choose which ones to start automatically or only manually. Finally, msconfig is already living in your Windows installation.

You don't need to clean the registry every time you unistall something. Unless you're a beta tester or install every piece of software you come across, you can clean the registry every six months or so. Doing it more often likely won't affect performance at all. Uninstalling uneeded services you only do once per installation, and checking the startup programs from time to time just to see if there is stuff you don't need shouldn't take much time either.

I seriously doubt that takes more time than reinstalling the entire OS. And if you're reinstalling the OS that often I don't see why you need to activate it. Just reinstall it every 30 days.

And if you reinstall less every six months, or a year, MS won't raise an eyebrow.

Why would you need to be next to the computer while the registry cleaner does its job? Just let it run. The other stuff shouldn't take you more than a couple of minutes each every few months. The point is, there really is no need to reinstall Windows that often (or at all). You might as well say "I reinstall it because I love the watching the blue screen and picking keyboards and languages."

Now, for the ultimate in time saving technology:
1. Get a copy of Acronis OS selector or something that'll let you copy an entire partition bit by bit.
2. Get two identical hard-drives.
3. Install and activate Windows.
4. Install all the drivers and applications you usually install after a clean install.
5. Use OS Selector to copy the hard drive with the new install to the second one.
6. Take out the second hard drive and store.
7. Now, whenever you need to reinstall windows, just copy the second drive to the first. That's it!

If you have several computers just get yourself a big hard drive and install Windows in partitions of, say, 10 or 20Gb, and copy each to different partitions in the big hard drive.

That'll save you tons more time and you'll never have to reactivate an installation!

Seeing as Windows does need to be reinstalled each season so you can clean up/get rid of your registry, porn, viruses, porn, spyware, adware, porn, Norton, etc.A good idea to get rid of. (assuming you replace it with something else)

I suggest never, ever installing Norton in the first place. Every single time I have done so, the lifespan of my Windows installations (various versions, and different hardware) have been cut in half or less, and shortly after installation, I have begun regularly getting BSODs in various situations. It also slows down performance and, for small programs, can increase the startup time tenfold.

I prefer going without any anti-virus. On my PC, I have never had to reformat due to viruses. But the stability of the raid on top of a nice OS image fresh after compleate install makes for an ultra stable machine that can take not only hardware glitches like no tomarrow but software as well

My next upgrade would probably be a new heatsink (Artic Cooling Freezer) and a fan or two.

Just tried to install SUSE RC1. Would not even boot from the CD.

What socket you using? I am sure I have a few recomendations (though thermaltake stoped making one of my favorite lines)

S939. I've heard that the Freezer can keep a FX60 OC'd to 2.94GHz at 38/46C. Plus it would blow the air out the back vent, not onto the CPU.

Any suggestions for a distro I could try tonight? I screwed up my Ubuntu and figured I could give another distro a try. EDIT: Right now I am thinking about downloading FoX Desktop Linux.

Depends for stability FreeBSD is my server baby

I have worked up desktop solutions

Not hard at all just a bit time consuming as everything is done from sorce not binary

(Think of it as like apt get but with various installers insead)

So lets say I wanted to install nano
I would go to /usr/ports/editors/nano and run "Make install clean"

There you go it downloads and builds from source

But it comes up no gui nothing so it is sometimes a day or two process of geting everything in

Anyways for coolers I go for the Thermaltake Silent Volcano 12's

Opteron is sitting at 39 Cel Right now Never peaks over 42 and whisper silent

I've heard FreeBSD is a bitch+1 to install. What Opteron's do you have?
EDIT: How is BSD's multimedia support?

246's (2.0's)

And naw actualy its no worse then any other distro for the install ... little bit more work setting up the amenities

It is a server distro all the way

Same reason seting up ubuntu server install and making it into a desktop distro would be a pain

Its not hard it just does not have all the option packs installed from scratch

Multimedia is the same as any other distro I have dealt with, the hardware is usualy fairly well suported (and linux binarys are acceptable) so install of applications to handle multimedia are cake

Actualy application install is a dream personally ...multimedia aps like xine (my fav) or vlc is cake

Hmm somine would probably hit 45. Not really looking for a server distro either, too much configuring for what I am looking for right now.

If I cannot decide, I will just get FC5. It has the fastest servers ever.

Gah while I use it in cirtian circumstances myself ... so bloated

Hey why not try a debian install? I heard not too bad and you being familiar with ubuntu this would be a nice transition

I have been meaning to do more with it myself (Oh I heard you only need the first two or three Cd's Unless you are planning to install the complete repositories

I tried to install Debian (etch). It did not detect my HDD's. I redownloaded it, checked the MD5 and reburnt it. It did not detect my HDD again. Gave up.

EDIT: I fixed my xorg.conf file! Apparantly it got et to 24bit color when vesa can only handle 16.

I only had that problem with my k8n-dl board (Nforce4)
Bios update solved that for me

I have a Radeon Xpress 200 chipset. The first ASUS mobo with crossfire. But I will be able to look into that in more detail, ya know why? Because ATI released a new fglrx driver! This one now supports all of their cards! Including my X1800XL. It is not in the repositorty yet, but I am going to dl and burn the ubuntu image (I am back to gnome btw) and see if I can get it to work. There are a bunch of links to guides at ubuntuforums.org. If I can get it going, I am going to try xgl too. I am so happy, I am like a kid in a candy shop, but he realized candy was just going to make him fat so he broke a nerd into a computer store. :)

I will, it will be a bit though. I want to have dapper on dvd just in case something goes wrong. I and going nuts waiting, but I have to do it know because I must burn with linux. Windows seems to be corrupting my DVD+RW's beyond repair (Nero and Imgburn were used). Cannot boot of a windows burnt disc, and Linux cannot mount it.

I only have access to DVD+RWs so that is what I use. I use k3b for all my burning needs. Anyways, I should domy homework whilst Ubuntu downloads, not way will it get done when it finishes *evil grin*.
