New Russian Missiles to Be Unrivalled for Next 15-20 Years — Expert

MosNews

New Russian missiles will easily be able to penetrate any prospective missile shield and will remain unrivalled for the next 15-20 years, the head of Russia’s top missile design institute has said.

Yuri Solomonov, the head of the Heat Technology Institute, the top Russian missile-design center, quoted by AP, said the Topol-M and Bulava ballistic missiles would form the core of the nation’s nuclear forces until 2040 and allow Russia to maintain nuclear parity with the U.S..

Each Bulava missile is equipped with six nuclear warheads, and Solomonov said Russia would easily be able to maintain at least 2,000 nuclear warheads by 2011. “By 2011, 2016 and even more so by 2020 the number of warheads will be no fewer than 2,000,” he said.

“The Russian people can sleep calmly through 2040,” Solomonov said when asked to comment on allegations that a slow pace of replacement of Russia’s Soviet-built nuclear arsenals with new strategic weapons systems was eroding the nation’s nuclear deterrent capability.

He said Russia would soon unveil specific plans to adapt the Bulava missile being developed for Russian nuclear submarines for use with land-based strategic missile forces as well.

Ok...does that not scare anyone else here in America? I thought the whole nuclear race was over...but they are still building? umm no good!

To be honest, 'run by the mafia' is not a great deal more comforting.

As long as the US wants to wave it's nuclear-tipped dick, other countries will compete.

Just remember that they've got a fairly large percentage of resources that the world depends upon. Come ten years' time, the rest of the world will be on its knees over oil. Russia will be fine. Oh. Guess they don't. Looks like...well, I can't tell what countries those are that are in the way--I want to say Jordan and Syria but that's probably not right--but there they are.

That said, I must agree that they are seeking defense against neighbors that are somewhat more hostile than they are, as opposed to the U.S., which has no such fear. The worst we've got from a border neighbor is an illegal immigrant situation.

Putin keeps trying to say otherwise. They do still have a decent sized leftover from the Cold War, though, so they could arm the missiles with those for the time being. =/

Digest of UK Energy Statistics

UK crude oil production peaked in 1999 and has declined subsequently. The 2003 Energy White Paper noted that the UK is expected to become a net importer of oil by around 2010.

The brent fields.

Well, not specifically. The UK imports a great deal of oil. But it also extracts a lot from the north sea, which it sells off to other countries.

(Though at current rates, it will be gone within the next ten years. I expect that's when you'll see scottish independence).

The world faces the same problem. Amost half of all non-opec oil exporters are in decline and most of the rest will be in just a few years.

And if I remember correctly, we export a good deal of the oil we produce.

Actually Mexico and Canada are in the top two spots and Venezuela is still in the top five. We yell at them and they yell at us, but we still need Hugo's oil and he still needs to sell it. As for our own production, most of our Alaskan oil goes to Japan, but you have to realize that it's basically a fair trade. It's cheaper for us to buy more from Mexico and Canada than it is to ship Alaskan oil to the lower 48 so it's pretty much a wash. That's why it's referred to as a "fungible" commodity. :) Since every barrel of oil of a certain grade is exactly the same as far as the market is concerned it makes no difference where we get it from.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, but my education in oil and energy is second hand. I learned about it because I heard about the problems and have educated myself. I'm not Mathew Simmons, though, so I feel more confident posting articles by others and discussing them. I am, however, going back to school this summer to get a degree in either petroleum geology or petroleum engineering so maybe then. :) I'm glad you find the subject interesting, though, because the more people who do the better chance we have of avoiding catastrophy.

Why would they want to fix the old? I don't fix my old 286 PC, I get a new one.
And you can always put conventional warheads on the missiles and still have a pretty mean weapon.

Russia and China just cannot sit around and hope for the best when American army is planning to create a defence against nuclear missile attacks, meaning, America can attack without fearing the consquences of retribution from these countries (China, Russia, North Korea etc). Therefore, a race for new and stealthy nuclear armament begins.

Russia needs to feel they can continue to compete with the US in something; they used to be our equals, now they're somewhere south of France in competitiveness. Plus, they're getting a little antsy about the missile shield tech. Okay, it doesn't work yet, but if they continue to work at it there's no reason for it not to.
The best thing about this is that it's a competition in an area that doesn't matter anymore. The US and Russia have exactly zero reasons to go for a nuclear exchange; the missile shield isn't even aimed at nations with a significant stockpile. So, let the Russians feel good about it. A little good feeling might help their economy along.
