This immigration controversy is the best thing to happen

I swear, before this I lost all hope for my community, my state, and my country. People left and right seemed to be politically apathetic, no one seemed to give a damn about anything that was going on.

And then finally, the immigration issue came up in March.

In the first week, sides were drawn.
Over the weekend, protests all over the country began over support for the immigrants.
On Monday, hundreds of kids from my school (here in Southern California) walked out and marched to City Hall in favor of the immigrants.

That whole week, those who were in favor of the immigrants actually had solified and strong opinions over their beliefs. Those against illegal immigrants (typically, Bush supporters and Republicans) were actually showing intellectual thought (I'm sorry, but before this I was worried...) and had actual opinions, thoughts, and solid beliefs tied to the protest.

I saw a group of anti-illegal immigrants who I thought were just idiots print out news articles, highlighting key points, and pointing them out around class.

It's amazing, I feel like I'm in an actual democracy for once.

Personally, I'm just enjoying the capitalist, anti-illegal immigrants posters attack the pro-illegal immigrants posters and go for each others jugulars.

Go USA!

Well, although I don't like illegals, I'm glad this thing has reaffirmed your belief in democracy.

You do understand, don't you, that the biggest pro-illegal immigrant in the country is George Bush, right?

Can I just say that the use of punctuation here is somewhat confusing? By calling them pro-illegal immigrants and anti-illegal immigrants, you're making it sound like everyone involved in the discussion is an immigrant that is either vocally against things being illegal or vocally in favour of illegalisation.

STATUE OF LIBERTY
ENLIGHTENING THE WORLD

The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

Fuck the morons who forget who made this country ..they show up throughout our history..the bigots and the xenophobes .
Our military and the people who literally BUILT this country are all comprised of IMMIGRANTS . The term" illegal " ..if you are here against the rules you are tresspassing ....change the friggin rules ! If you are here and you are WORKING and are paying taxes ..then WTF ?? Thats your visa . The US needs to be immigrant friendly ...especially when you consider that they are here because we DEMAND their labor..if there wher no EMPLOYERS demanding the labor then there is no reason to be here and no problem .
Except of course for the minority that are here for amnesty and polical reasons . OUR ancestors at one time were all immigrants . My ancestors at one time ( Italian / German) where actually treated with the same disdane and predudice as any other group at different time s in our countries history .
Remember we have TODAY on the list of people who are either dead wounded or still serving in the US military ..immigrants..people who believe enough in the spirit and the true meaning of being an AMERICAN that they are willing to die for it ...and us .
When they make those that employ " illegal " immigrants felons then talk about changing the law to make the people you call illegals felons .

Yeah, I realized that. I was hoping the reader would understand what I meant...

Well, yeah. But given the pedant population of these forums, there're probably dozens of people writhing in pain right now. Just thought I'd throw them a bone.

Anyway, yay for political debate in the mainstream. Here we get by with rocks and cussing, but the effect is much the same.

Directed to anyone, I suppose...

What happened to the May 1 strike thread... there was a lot of good immigration discussion in there, yet I can't find it on page 1 or 2 (where it would almost certainly be).

Or am I blind? hehe

The US lets in more legal immigrants than any other country in the world.

yeah, i don't think (and hope) too many people in here are actually against immigrants/immigration per se... more the conditions surrounding:

a) What immigrants should do once they get here (IE, work for a living vs. live off the gov't teat)

b) Whether "illegal" immigrants should be able to stay... so long as they're working or seeking work.

c) Whether special consideration (mitigating) should be given to "illegal" immigrants who actually do want to become American citizens.

etc.
