I think it's a combination of both.

Personally I prefer to take people on an individual basis. And, to me, all a flag "represents" is a way to identify what country a ship is based in. Patriotism comes from the heart, not a bunch of fabric.

The Mexican flag, flying above an inverted American flag, both of which are against protocol for flying the American flag. The only time it's appropriate to fly the American flag upside down is when there's a legitimate emergency, usually aboard ship.
So long as the flag belongs to them (or they have permission) they should be allowed to do with it what they please.

Tell me, why do you put so much emphasis on a symbol? Wouldn't you energy be better spent on living patriotically and representing your personal interpretation of your country's values, rather than getting all bunched up over what other people do with cloth based symbol of said country? It seems like a horrible wast of time and effort.

It's such a shame that it has become like that here.
Wait, what? Where did that come from?
Oh, and flag. Upside down. Oh dear.

Flying the Old Glory upside down is usually a symbol of national emergency.

The ides of burning the White House down has already been done. Except it just wasn't called 'White House' at the time. The only reason why that house is white is 'cuz they repainted it.

Not true. That's just another one of those myths that people believe without checking it out. It's been painted white since 1798, and it was known as "the White House" by some by 1811, a full year before the burning.

This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is it vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.
