Is this the beginning of the end for lightbulbs? Come to think of it, light bulbs do seem quite primitive and ineffiecient.
Its already used in new O-LED TVs. Article is out of date already! XD

Once this become affordable to the average person, this should be a great advance.

O-LEDs are cheap though.

I didn't know T.V.s used to have lightbulbs :D

that looks pretty cool. probably expensive for a while tho

O-leds can be used to display colors in perfectly flat-bendable TV screens. >.>

quite... how could this be a new invention when its already in use
still good though

Its already out, but it needs to evolve still. Seriously you could have tattoos powered by your body that light up and give you whatever you want on your SKIN and its changable/removable!
100% efficency is GODLIKE though. This TV could be run by a AA battery.

lol lightup tattoos. some day we're going to land on an alien planet, and it's going to be like our worse B-scifi ever.

It doesn't quite work like that. Assuming you could get 100%, A TV requires a bit more Wattage than provided by a AA for more than a few minutes. If you put in 10W you get out 10W w/o any heat loss, etc.
Modern florescents say 60W when only using 15W. What that means is you get the equivalent light output (lumens) by using only 15W in comparison to a traditional bulb.
Yes, I work in the lighting industry.
Thing is they aren't going to generate heat. >.> Only light. 100% efficent at it is the goal and is possible they believe.

They'll get close I'm sure. I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to this (100% claims, etc.) so I tend to be a bit anal about it. There will be some loss no matter what you use, whether in heat, EMI, etc. State of the art industrial lighting is working in the 95%+ range. Flourescents are in the 98% range.
I would like to see the specifications on light output and lifetime in comparison to traditional incadescents.

100% efficiency can't ever be possible, can it?

Fine, post the same thing as me, in more detail, before I do.
Natural light, eh? I like that. Considering I'm fighting myself over going to bed too late, this may be a good idea.

Most of the stuff is here...I forgot where, but its believed that it can get 100% efficency by only giving off light instead of heat and light. :)

Good source, thank you.
From what I read, as of right now, quality wise the are becoming comparable to high efficiency flourescents but have less longevity and are still prone to environmental factors w/ expensive components.
It looks promising household and business use.
When an electric current passes through them, they combine to produce white light.
Previous attempts to make OLEDs like this have largely failed to make an impact because traditional phosphorescent blue dyes are very short lived.
The new polymer uses a fluorescent blue material instead which lasts much longer and uses less energy.
The researchers believe that eventually this material could be 100% efficient, meaning it could be capable of converting all of the electricity to light, without the heat loss associated with traditional bulbs.
The new material can also be printed onto glass or plastic and so in theory could create large areas of lighting, relatively cheaply.

I know. Like I said though, there are other factors besides heat and there still would be some loss.

The system hooked up to it yes. Resistors and the sort. Though the OLED itself won't. :D
100% efficiency and 10,000 hours are goals.
Sounds like researchers talking about their ideal fantasy.
They will get close, though.
Lighted wallpaper, lighted chairs and tables, lighted clothes, cool!

I hope they act like those "natural light" lamps for seasonal affective disorder. This whole "laying down and wanting to die" thing that happens to me every winter really cuts down on my productivity.

Yeah, I'm not so concerned about lightbulbs, but those fluorescent ones that make me feel like I'm one gigantic headache.
Lol. Oleds replace it. :)
