"Incomplete Endings"

The Beautiful Darkness
13-04-2006, 07:44
I just finished watching the last episode of a series that ran for about 130 episodes give or take. From the begininning of the story, there was a huge build-up to the "final showdown", which was the only reason I was still watching: to find out what happened.

So here I am, watching the last episode thinking "great, I'll finally find out" when, suddenly, the credits roll in.

Is it just me, or do other people get annoyed at inconclusive endings?

But so many other things do that too! Haven't you ever read a really good book that has a suprisingly inconlusive ending?

No kidding...

Anyway, I like open endings. It's why I like the autuer films from the seventies that didn't so much end as stop-the best example being The Conversation...that was fuckin' great.

That's what I need; a nice short series... That way I won't get so annoyed over the ending lol :p

Damn, that's evil..

Is it just me, or do other people get annoyed at inconclusive endings? I don't like most endings. Because when it's a good show, it means there won't be any more episodes.
And when it's not a good show, well, the ending probably won't be any good either.

But the OVA has A) the REAL characters, not this Incognito crap, B) kickass animation, and C) Pip, Schrodinger, and Rip Van Winkle, formerly manga-only characters who kick so much ass in the story later on. It also has Hellsing pitted against a Nazi organization, including Zorin, the crazy lady with half her body tattooed in what can only be assumed to be religious symbols, and...Yeah. The Hellsing OVA is going to be much, MUCH greater than the Hellsing anime. For one thing, no pulled-out-of-the-writers'-asses characters like Incognito and Helena. Such fake characters.

(Sorry, I'm a big Hellsing fan, myself. Have you SEEN the first episode of the OVA? You should download and watch it right now if you haven't, since you consider yourself a Hellsing fan.)

I'm more offended by TV/Movies where they've blatantly painted themselves into a corner and take a complete dues ex machina to save themselves.

Example:

Signs
Independence Day
War of the Worlds

Signs was building up nicely, could of been a very good invasion flick with a great side story about faith, instead it was a mediocre faith story with some of the stupidest fuckin aliens ever.

Indepence Day, abruptly the script writers realized that they'd given the aliens shields that we absolutely couldn't break through and used possibly the dumbest possible way around it.

War of the Worlds, worst ending EVER.

Not quite the same as inconclusive endings, but one thing that really irritates me is when programmes have a (sub-)storyline or (semi-)important character that just disappears without explanation. I'm a big fan of both 24 and The West Wing, but they seem to do that a lot.

I was disapointed by the ending.

Well, you have to realise that Independence Day was basically a pisstake of every bad action movie out there. I hated it when I first watched it, but when I watched a second time with the view of it being a delibrately bad movie, it was enjoyable. Ever action-movie cliche you could think of was thrown in there - including of course the Deux ex Machina ending.

Signs on the other hand was just plain shite. "Ohhhh...we're like the wicked witch of the west and can't stand water. Oh, look! A planet that's 70% water, populated by water-based lifeforms. Let's land there!"

What really pisses me off is a show called ''The Pretender'', that was on about6 or 7 years ago that i just loved, well written and well thought out.It had half decent ratings despite being moved from one night to another and so on..The middle of the third year it was just yanked no warning, no wrapup,no nothing.. There was talk of a movie to wrap things up but nothing came of it.:(

Apparently there was a movie made of it that has a more resolved ending...

I hate those episodes that are basically flashback episodes, where they just recall other episodes.

I used episodes three times in that sentence.

Don't take that too seriously, but I truly hated the book, and you can nail me upon a cross before you get me to say that I liked it. Which I didn't.

Adams humor doesn't appeal to all but still its far from being a horrible book. Hell its one of my favorites when it comes to science fiction/humor just because of the way its structured.

War of the Worlds, worst ending EVER.

Hint: the clue is in the title. It's War of the Worlds not Men vs. Martians.

What do you think would've been a good ending for War of the Worlds?

EDIT: Which one are you talking about? The one from a few decades ago, or the one with Tom Cruise in it?

Independence Day and War of the Worlds are essentially the same. Except for some bells and whistles, the only difference was that in War of the Worlds, the aliens were defeated by a human pathogen and in Independence Day they were defeated by a computer virus. And, of course, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum make much better heroes than Tom Cruise.
