I'm a bit confused. To me, welsh rarebit is grilled cheese on toast, and usually with some tomato sauce. Is it different?

No.

Tomato sauce? What's wrong with you? You like Red Leicester, right?

Red Leicester? I'm more of a cheddar person. I prefer the milder cheeses. And my parents tried to convince me feta was a viable option, because it was crumbly, although it's more like curds than cheese so...

What is welsh rarebit then?

Enough about the rabbit. It's called Welsh Rabbit because apparently the Welsh were too "feckless" to catch rabbits so had to make do with melted cheese on toast (according to wiki). It became known as Welsh Rarebit because people we're too stupid to understand why it was called welsh rabbit (also according to wiki).

*For some reason, the mental image pops up of poor Welsh farmers running after small herd of cheese, catching them with improvised tools, slaughtering, skinning and then melting the cheeses while congratulating themselves on a good days work whilst handing over the rinds to be made into cheese-skin lined boots. I'll ask my Welsh room-mate about it*

Maybe I just have an overactive imagination

Lancashire?

Proper Welsh Rarebit is grated cheese mixed with a bit of beer or milk or butter then toasted..
