Good Friday Not So Good For Drinkers

Ok for those who don't know every bar in Ireland is going to be closed this Friday for religous reasons. The rush is now on to find the elusive lock in (a pub willing to allow regular patrons access to a closed bar),Now I know its just for one day a year but this is the twenty first centuary and I feel that those who like a couple of beers in a bar on a Friday with some friends are being unfairly stung. Well, I always found the Irish quite charming. Surely, they'll catch up on Sunday.

Here's a plan:
Between now and Friday, buy as much alcohol as you can.
On Friday, have a massive piss-up.
Not much of a plan, really...

Ah though its the principle of the thing .Telling an irish man he cant drink is like telling an american they can't drive.

Stout drinkers ???
They have a problem. The problem is they drink stout and not beer. Beer is lovely from bottles.

The other alternative is to get so drunk on Thursday, you'll still be pissed by the time you go to bed on Friday.

They're Catholics. If they weren't Catholics, they might as well bow to the Queen.

See, if you look at it that way, it becomes your patriotic duty to stay away from the devil juice on Friday. :D

You can't drink stout from a bottle?

(Hmm, that reminds me...I have homebrew stout in the fridge... :p)

All the pubs (here at least) will open at midnight anyway, and I rarely get to town before midnight on a friday. If I want to go out saturday night it will suck more though because of easter sunday.

Ok for those who don't know every bar in Ireland is going to be closed this Friday for religous reasons.Come up to Belfast! A lot of them shut here, but not all of them, especially the hotel bars (seemingly not just open to residents). We ended up spending most of the day in the Europa (http://www.hastingshotels.com/index.cfm/aID/197/Content_Key/587/type/category/CatName/Europa.html) last year. Cost a small fortune, but for once we didn't mind.

If you live close to the border make a road trip to Belfast. Can't think of a major pub or club in the city centre that closes.

edit: oh, Kazcapar got there already...

I plan to go out on thursday and make the most of the day off on friday.

That, and uni nights are usually on thursdays I think, so i'll get cheap drinks. Which is good.

Exactly. It's cheaper, too.

You didn't see the guy who prances about on "Lobby Lives" did you? The one and only time I've had a drink in the Europa he was there.

Just another example of a pseudo-theocratic government getting in the way of people's freedom. Religion has been the bane of freedom, fun, and liberty since the beginning of time. I say you rise up and steal the sacramental wine!

I think I've seen him once or twice, but don't remember having talked to him. From the little I've seen of the programme, I'm not sure I'd want to! The boyfriend and I have actually become regulars in the Piano/Gallery Bar because we both used to work in offices close to it, and it's fairly quiet (unlike most other bars at 5 on a Friday evening). The bloke that seems to be Head Barman or similar recognises us now and starts pouring the drinks when he sees us coming :p But it's expensive, so unless we're feeling flush we only have one or two pints before moving on.

I would also whinge about it, but considering that I get paid double on this saturday and next monday, i'm going to remain tight-lipped about it.

Ah, but for how much longer? Stupid John Howard (sorry about the hijack).

To the topic at hand: Buy a couple of slabs from the bottle shop & enjoy them at home. If you don't like bottled stout, just try something different.

...Who cares? Why even go out? The best parties are at a home without last call and annoying bastards. Might not be random girls but honestly if you do it right you need only go out to the bars once in a great while for that. ;) Also you can hit up someone else's party and have way more chance of actually talking to someone there.

You should try the Monico Bar, just beside Whites Tavern...every time I;ve been there on a Friday evening after work some waiter/waitress has come round with a big tray of chicken wings and mini-sausages and you can just take as much as you want. And it all tastes good :)

I like the upstairs of Whites Tavern - ropy old armchairs and battered furniture - it has a similar vibe to the Menagerie when it first opened. Sadly the Menagerie has lost the glorious feeling that it was just furnished from the remnants found in the skips of the Holylands and now feels like a bit of a dive. (To say nothing of their legendarily shagged PA system).

I've only been in the Menagerie a few times over the last few years; the last time being at the Mencap charity gig last August featuring Tin Pot Operation, Hamdsome Gaz (him and TPO being the highlight of the night), the Betes Noires, The Tupelo Incident and others...

It's a bit dingey, but it has its own charm I suppose.

And it all tastes good :)I like the Monico...and the food bit's especially appealing :p Varsity, on University Gardens (from University Road, it's the first street on the right before the Malone Road, beside Methody) do something similar. It's a bit trendy - and it's a non-smoking bar - but the free food is welcome. IIRC, the Deer's Head between Royal Avenue and North Street gives out free food on Friday nights too. It's quite a nice little bar, but unfortunately I think they have some really loud band on at the time in question. I love live music, but not when you're just out for a quiet pint!

They also seem to now play a lot of music that's not really to my tastes, unlike that first evening I spent in it. A couple of times recently when I've tried going in during the day or on week nights, it's been closed as well.

There's some suggestions for you, Ratod, if you do come up to Belfast. And it's only the tip of the iceberg.
