Your Spy Car

Cannot think of a name

Ha-can't leave anything off a poll if I don't do one!

I was thinking of what my spy car would be just a minute ago. Initially I thought that a '63 Stingray (http://www.blairlee.com/cars/gr/63vette.jpg), jet black, would be cool. But aside from being a spy car in Austin Powers (http://diecastplanet.com/images/s/33517.jpg), it was also the 'theme' car in the TV show Stingray (http://www.tv.com/stingray/show/381/summary.html). You all remember the TV show Stingray, right? The mysterious favor for a favor guy who was hoping to capatilize in the 'wandering helper guy' formula-in the strong tradition of The Fugitive, The Hulk, The A-Team, Knight Rider...maybe I should do a thread on your favorite roaming helper TV show...maybe not...

So anyway-I think for the moment, and this is always subject to change, my spy car choice is going to have to be the Maserati 3500gt (http://www.blackhawkcollection.com/image/cars/1960%20maserati%203500%20spyder%20f.JPG). Though I could see this as making me look like a cut-rate Bond, not really straying far from the mold.

For that, there would be the '85 Buick Century (http://powerful-cars.de/buick/1981/IMG_7089.JPG). Why? Because in the 80s all of the GM product cars looked the same. I'm not talking the usual "all these cars look basicly the same" kind of thing, they all had the same structure and only varied in options and badging. So it would look like one of thousands of cars and be hard to distinguish from any of them. No one would expect it. It would be the car the Spanish Inquisition would drive. There, I said so you don't have to...

So, what would your spy car be? Remember, it's your spy car. You are not limited to fesibility or practicality.

Also, even though I didn't give it for mine, what would your spy car be capable of?

Well, I was going to choose the Condor from M.A.S.K., but I decided I'd rather have a Cyclone instead.

I'd want something beyond suspicion. Yet something that is reflective of my personality.

It would have to be roomy. And Phallus-shaped. Why Phallus-shaped you ask? If you don't understand, I don't thnk an explanation will help. :p

Suffice to say, Only one vehicle meets those standards:

Quality, and on that subject-I saw a Oscar Meyer Wiener pedal car today at a thrift store. It wasn't for sale, unfortunately, because if it was that would have been how I got home today. (since The Lego blew up in front of my house yesterday...)

Understated, elegant, plenty of room in back for storing accrued corpses or a long lovemaking session with a beautiful female spy, whichever comes first. ;)

Sweet. :)

But it stands out a little too much for spying. Now for an off-duty car, that'd be the ticket. Definitely my style.

I don't know much about cars...but I know what I like.

I'd want one of those old Cadillacs use by the G-Man back in the day (y'know, for the intimidation factor), then I'd outfit it with state-of-the-art GPS, bulletproof plating and windows, dumbfire rockets behind the headlights, a tracking .50 caliber machinegun mounted under the car, oil-slick and spikes (naturally), and to top it all off, a 150 disk CD changer.

I gotta ask, what happens to the .50 the first time you go over a speedbump?

Me, dark grey Lincoln Mark VIII, lowered 2 inches all the way around, blown 302 in the insulated engine compartment, onboard GPS, HUD system from a Caddy with the intregal infrared scanning, low-profile puncture resistant tires,(run-flats would be potentially good) reinforced chassis and suspension, some sort of ECM/ECCM suite, inboard laser survelliance microphone, kevlar/carbon fiber inserts in the body panels. And NO spinners!

That's the 'new' one-from the what seems perm-a-stalled. I have a soft spot for The Green Hornet and Black Beauty (his car, not the horse...).

Green Hornet is also one of those frustrating things as it's one of the ideas I accidently 're-invented,' I was thinking of a newspaper man creating a villian to sell papers but actually used the 'villian' to fight crime and, and...yeah, give him a kung fu master side-kick and that's The Green Hornet...dammit...

Not as bad as the day I thought I had stumbled on a perpetual motion machine only to realize I re-invented hydro-electric power...

That looks quality, a wandering dog helper! I've never heard of it but now I feel like I need to hunt it down.

I thought of maybe another spy car-though this one I'd be happy with just as a car (truth be told I'd be more than happy with that 3500GT-I found one for like $6 grand because he had put a Chevy engine in it (HERETIC!)...unfortunately no organ I could do without was worth that much...plus I'd need the money to put the right engine back in it...)

But an alternative choice for spy car-the Jaguar XKSS (http://www.lynxmotors.co.uk/grafix/xkss728.jpg).

There only being 13 of them might hurt the subtlety...

There's that, and the fact that it's goregous, that there's so many places to mount super-spy guns and stuff, and that if you were a spy and ever got in a chase you would win. Without contest.

And it sounds increbible.

Well, you would expect a 7.3 litre Merc AMG V12 to sound good.....

That rear exhaust cluster already looks like a gatling gun, it's off to a great start. I've only heard it in video games, where it's really hard to control (mostly becuase I have to remind myself, "Dude, you're now approaching that turn at 160 mph, gonna take some more braking than when you where going in at 60 mph...") but I imagine it sounds great. But then I'm a full grown adult who still makes engine noises when no one else is around...

Alright, here's a real effort on my part-
Start with a 59 Caddy (http://www.jbwheels.com/custom/59caddy2.jpg).

Now, for the rest of it-remember, feasibility isn't required-I can make up all kinds of crazy crap...

Turbine engines with electric booster/back-up. They have after-burners in the 'jet port look' outlets in the back. The lights have a flash burst in them that is bright enough to stun, the second lamps have camera/infrared. Ordanance launches out of the bumper where the have that 'intake' look. A rotating plate extends from underneath the car to make it rotate in place. Smoke comes from all the orifices of the car, depending on needs.

Or, maybe a 49 Nash (http://jeffersontx.com/rodrun/2001/custom1.jpg) that can turn into a hovercraft...

Yeah, I first saw one (outside of a magazine) one time when I was in England, and I just fell in love with it from the looks. It just looks like the perfect supercar. Stunning.

Then the driver got in and rocketed off. My god. Incredible sound. I've seen and heard Maseratis, Ferraris, Astons, Porshes...all here in Belfast. And I thought a Ferrari F575M sounded amazing (even a 612 didn't sound as good). Until I heard the Zonda...it makes the Ferrari sound like nothing at all.

When I had my little Porsche I came up on a dude in a F40. I tried to catch up with him to get a good look, but there was a roar and two little curls of dust that sprang from the corners where the car used to be. That was a pretty cool engine sound, even over the din of mine...I've also like the sound of the Ducati that used to pass by me in my old town.

So far the best sound I've heard was the 917k at the Monterey Historics. The times I've been passed by Ferraris now I've been too insulated in my damned modern car(an 85) to really hear them. I love the sounds of engines...

I'd get a Powder Blue 1974-1980 Trans Am with T-tops, manual transmision, and slap a V-12 on it. Oh, it would have the firebird on it of course. A Trans Am without it's eagle is like being castrated, if not worse. But yeah, that would make a sweet spy car, but I'd make it more like an uber bad-ass retro car.

I know what you mean about Ducs...in fact, bikes in general.

I go to alot of motorbike road races (you know the Isle of Man TT? well there are many like that in Ireland throughout the year, but the Irish ones have a mass start. The best are the North West 200 and the Ulster GP...both International events, the UGP even used to be on the Moto GP, or 500cc as it was, calendar) and you can get into the paddock. So I spent a fair bit of time standing listening to the race bikes, some of the top ones being either last years World Superbikes or this years British Superbikes, just standing listening to them being warmed up. Gorgeous sound.

You'd love where I live, I'm off a highway through the redwoods that's all turns-motorcylcists and vintage sports car drivers think of it was a religious destination, so on weekends every couple of minutes something rockets by-extra cool is the load up as the the stretch in front of my house is fairly straight going into a hairpin, then they pull out with a cliff on one side and a river running below on the other.
