after a certain amount of posts, I'll tell everyone to hold ther votes, calculated them, and go on to the next round. Also, if anyone wondered, the Beatles are not on here because if they were, no one would stand a chance.

1. Pink Floyd vs. The Doors - Jimmy had the better voice, the Floyds the better guitar player. David Gilmour takes the point for Pink Floyd.

2. Metallica vs. Iron Maiden - Crap. I mean, not to be difficult about it, but c'mon, now. Bruce Dickinson is either laughable or unlistenable or both; Metallica is pompous, mannered overproduced sputum. Nil-all.

3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience vs. Led Zeppelin - Tough call. I'm going with Jimi on this one, though. I think he was far and away the better guitarist; From whhat I know of each act's live performances I'd say Jimi gave more sheer entertainment value, dollar for dollar, than Zeppelin ever did. And, let's face it, Hendrix picked a good age to die prematurely under slightly mysterious (or at least tawdry) circumstances. Hendrix:1, Zeppelin:0.

4. Cream vs. Queen - I shouldn't even dignify this one. For all of those who missed growing up or living in the 70s, here's a freakin' HEADS-UP: Queen was radio-filler. Always was. By that I mean, there was a roster of heavy international, touring rock groups throughout the 70s. Between album releases by these heavies, radio stations needed fresh tunes to play between the big hits by the big bands. Queen was one of those bands producing fresh tunes to stick between the Stones cuts and the new Zeppelin LP. I could go on about this all night, but I won't. Point for Cream.

5. AC/DC vs. Black Sabbath - Sabs take it with Ozzy, lose it with Dio. AC/DC takes it with Bon Scott, loses it back to Sabs with assist from Ian Gilliam, and in a surprise twist, both bands call it even match.

6. The Who vs. The Eagles - No. Fucking. Eagles. If you ever drew breath in the 70s, you'd know why I'm saying this. Lemme put it this way, what's worse? The first few thousand times you have to listen to 'Hotel California' or the next few thousand times?

This makes two really good bands that I really, really like that you've paired up with bands I wish people would forget ever existed. This is totally messing with my head. Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwhistle and Keith Moon are some of my favourite Rock & Roll performers ever.

Point (obviously) to the Who.

7. Van Halen vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Who cares? No, really. Who does? I sure as Hell don't. Van Halen reached its' "best before" date sometime around 1983, and the other is a regionally-popular pobucker band. Nil-all.

8. The Rolling Stones vs. The Grateful Dead - The Stones suck live, they've always sucked live, the Dead were at their best live... the Stones had buckets o' radio hits, and have been in the public eye since before I was born... the Dead have a (very) small handful of hits, but I had to endure Grateful Dead-immersion while I lived in a communal flat in college. Tough one.

Hmm.

Point goes to - ah, what the Hell: Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention!!
