Personally I think that our society has destroyed both Easter and Christmas, as well as pretty much all other religious festivals. I think if people are going to celebrate any religious festival in any manner (for example, by stuffing themselves on chocolate), then they should be made to pay more than lip-service to the actual festival.

Well, your other thread got hijacked, why not this one as well? :p

I think the word candy sucks.

It's either Chocolate, or sweets.

You can still have chocolate and not forget why Easter and Christmas exist. I was thinking of those Reese's egged shaped things that I won't see again until next March. That doesn't mean I've forgotten why Easter is celebrated by the Church.

Okay, I'm finished with that rant. Sorry for aiding the hijacker: I'm leaving now.

Yeah, my point was that most people (myself included) don't actually celebrate Easter other than to eat tons of chocolate.

My junior year in college, my house had a Peeps eating contest. Who could eat the most in a minute. That was pretty disgusting.

Sorry.

I don't like Peeps. I never have liked marshmallow to begin with, and the texture is just plain revolting.

Why? Just because it irritates you? Sorry -- not even close to a motivation.

You (nominally) stuff yourself on chocolate because shrewd marketers understood that Easter was the end of Lent -- thereby raking in the cash by selling Lent observers the stuff they'd been barring themselves from for roughly two months.

Besides, Easter co-opted Pagan and Roman rites, so whither legitimacy?

It doesn't irritate me. I just wonder what the point is. I mean, if the Church discovered some new writings by St. Peter, and formed a new festival around him, it wouldn't take long for at least one MNC to make a commercial killing out of it.

Do true followers of Christianity actually need these festivals (Easter and Christmas) to show (to whoever - themselves or others) that they're true Christians? A festival is just an excuse for a massive party, and it always has been.

I wasn't making a point of legitimacy - but you're right. Easter is just a typical pagan spring rebirth celebration (not helped by the fact it's a moveable feast), while Christmas is a celebration of the winter solstice.

I guess that just makes Christians hypocrites when they make a massive point of preaching to others around the times of the festivals, but I won't get into that.

I find myself preaching less: more people try to act "Christian" around these times, so I find myself with fewer opportunities to witness (or preach) because everyone just says what the Church believes at Christmas and Easter. Everyone being the majority. The US is still "officially" a Christian nation: the vast majority citizens still identify themselves as Christians. Whether they are or not is another discussion. I did it again. I'm still going to post this, but it's the last time for this thread!

In your life, perhaps. On here there do seem to be more directly preachy threads around this time and at Christmas. Also, here in the UK, far less people identify themselves as Christian and church attendance is far lower, so there's more opportunities for the preachy people to preach.

shouldn't you eat the legs first so it can't run away (as bunnies do) then work your way up

what if I know a girl called candy can I eat her? ;)

Since I'm holding on to their legs while eating their ears, they're pretty much immobilized - chocolate bunnies don't have much of a kick.

As to the girl, you'd have to ask her.

I got given an After Eight easter egg! First time I've ever even got a vaguely luxury easter egg. Oh, and Cabury's Creme eggs contain the sugary nectar of the gods, but they tend to sell them all year round now.

Nestle are teh evil.I know, I'm trying to get them banned from my SU vending machines. I have a large wad of paper of all the evil things that have done with regards to the baby milk scandal, but I want to find stuff that isn't related to baby milk.

And the After Eight egg was given to me, not bought by me.

My SU has put up a notice saying that it's student's personal choice as to whether or not they buy Nestle or not. Then they went and made all meat Halal in the products they sell in the cafe. Yup. Personal choice. Well, it's my personal choice not to eat meat from an animal that's still conscious when its throat is slit. (I'm actually vegetarian).

Oh dear. You really don't know? Really? Really really?

Nestle employed seriously unethical marketing with regards to its baby milk products in the developing world. Promoting its product as an equal alternative to breast milk, when in fact it a subsitute for women who have problems with producing breast milk in enough quantity. Breast milk being far superior in that it is free, contains antibodies from the mother's body and changes in its mixture to suit the baby's stage of development. Whereas baby milk is the exact opposite to all of these. The milk could also be prohibitively expensive, but provided free of charge for patients in hospitals. So that when the mother left the hospital the milk was no longer free, but her breasts would have also stopped producing milk due to lack of stimuli.
