Just a word of encouragement to those among you who are on the verge of dispair, who are depressed, or who are just feeling a bit down.
We were all born without our consent. All of us will surely die. But it's what you do in between that matters. When you feel like things are ganging up against you, dig down deep and find the courage to not only survive, but to live this life the best you possibly can!
Never give up! Never surrender! Never say "die!" And take no mother-frakking prisoners!
A few of my favorite quotes:
"Don’t let anyone steal our dreams." Michael Jordan
"You just can't beat the person who never gives up." Babe Ruth, Legendary Baseball Player
"You have no control over what the other guy does. You only have control over what you do." A J Kitt
"If it weren't for the dark days, we wouldn't know what it is to walk in the light." Earl Campbell - NFL running back
"Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play. It is as simple as that. God, I love that opportunity." Mike Singletary - NFL Linebacker
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals." - Unknown
"My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging." Hank Aaron
"The funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't." - Gibby Haynes
"A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest." Simon & Garfunkel
"Ain’t no chance if you don’t take it." Guy Clark

Kewl. It's a good quote. It's from "The Boxer," one of my favorite songs of theirs:
The Boxer
I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my existence
For a pocket full of mumbles such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know
Lie la lie ...
Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers,
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there
Lie la lie ...
Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me
Bleeding me, going home
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains.
Lie la lie, lie la lie lie lie lie lie, lie la lie, lie la lie lie lie la lie lie, lie-lie la lie

Giving up a worthy goal out of weakness, cowardice, laziness, whatever, is, while understandable, not the greatest thing to do.
But giving up something that makes you feel bad about yourself, that you know is unwilling to be obtained, that is, objectively, not a worthy goal, certainly is the right thing to do.

"Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over." - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Ah, yes. The inimitable Mr. Fitzgerald.
Rudyard Kipling has a pretty good handle on it too. I first read this poem when I was about eleven years old, and I took it very much to heart:
If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
Obviously Kipling was writing to men, but the same things apply to all people, whatever their sex, age or location. It makes me laugh and smile because, looking back over my life, I realize the times when every word of it was true. :)

I like that quote. The sheer drudgery of day-to-day living even gets me down at times. I just try to focus on the next "good thing" that's going to happen in my life, and remind myself that the only way to that is through the drudgery.
"When in doubt, drink your troubles out?" Hmmm. Might work for an evening. :pNah, something I'm extremely proud of is that in all my time of being depressed, I never tried to drown the pain in alcohol. I've made a habit of only drinking when around friends :)

Don'tcha just love those times when you're with a group of people you like and you're all a bit tipsy, and someone tells a joke that someone else picks up on and remembers another one, and soon you're all just laughing your asses off? :D

In disciplinig your kids, yes, it works. In encouraging someone with depression, not so much.

Drinking your problems away? - All too often, you wind up with a really bad hangover and find that not only havent your problems gone away, but they usually have invited some of their friends along to join in the gang-bang.

That's true, especially if they're clinically depressed. Telling someone who's depressed to "snap out of it" isn't just unworkable, it can actually make things worse.

there are 2 reasons someone would be depressed
1) they want to be, then tough love works
2) they have a medical problem, then all the encouragment in the world won't "fix" anything, they need to go to the doctor.
I have never seen a depressed person benifit from someone lying to them.
Don'tcha just love those times when you're with a group of people you like and you're all a bit tipsy, and someone tells a joke that someone else picks up on and remembers another one, and soon you're all just laughing your asses off? :DThe secret to getting roaring drunk together is drinking games. One of my favorites:
King's Corner (also known as King's Cup)
Get a pack of 52 cards and everyone takes a turn drawing one. Each card has a different meaning. Deuces through 4's represent "fingers", which are passed out at will by the person that drew the card. People receiving "fingers" drink that many finger-widths of their drink. I'm rather confused as to the order of the other rules, but they include rhyming (one person makes a rhyme and the first person to fail in a reasonable amount of time has to drink), topics (one person names a topic [movies, cars] and all others name something from that topic; first person to fail drinks), Drinking Fountain (the person that drew the card starts drinking- as soon as he/she does, the next person starts to drink and so on until everyone's drinking- then the card drawer stops drinking, and so on [some wicked people take their time when drinking]), and making up rules (usually the ace, you get to make up a rule that everyone has to follow, such as "whenever you swear, you drink").
Game ends when the fourth King is drawn, and the person to do that usually either drinks the cup that was being filled every time a King got drawn or everything on the table.

LOL! Gotta love it! :D
One particularly vivid scene from the movie "Patton" was when the war was over and he and his staff were guests of the Russians.
When the time came for toasts, the Russian general toasted Patton, then waited for the translation. Patton replied to the translator:
"Tell the general that I will not drink with him or with any other Russian son-of-a-bitch."
The translator reluctantly translated, whereupon the Russian general replied:
"You too are a son-of-a-bitch!"
To which Patton responded by laughing and said:
"I'll drink to that ... one son-of-a-bitch to another son-of-a-bitch!"
Whereupon, they linked arms in the Russian manner and proceeded to drink, almost eyeball to eyeball.
To me, that became metaphor for the entire Cold War relationship between the US and the USSR. :)

I didn't say it would be simple, nor did I say you were doing nothing. It's hard to get out of depression once you are in it, and even harder to stay out once you get better, but I hear too often from people "well, I took those pills and life still sucks" and it annoys me, of course life sucks, I don't need to be reminded of it, I try to do things to lessen the blow.
