So, I had to explain the concept of "Germanic" and "Slavic" today.

Me and this Polish guy in my history class were explaining to an "Aussie" girl the European ethnicities. We eventually dumbed it down to drawing a line between Germany and Poland. "Everything west of this line is Germanic, everything east is Slavic." Not actually true, but close enough.

KP, explain to me the physical differences between Germanic and Slavic peoples. (ignoring language.)
Because I just thought about it, and I came up empty. Why are they considered a distinct "race"?

It's simple:
Slavs eat kielbasa.
Germans build death factories.

Any differences are purely linguistic.
...and race is a cultural construct anyway

Okay, those are cool names. Why did I have to be born English when I could have been an Ugric (Ugricish?)

Yeah, and I'm going 5:1 odds he somehow adds in anti-Muslim rhetoric, and 2:1 odds he starts ranting about pure Germans and how they shoud be superior or some other trash.

Ehhhh, methinks I shouldn't touch this, just in case it opens a can of racist worms, and I don't even know if Germanic and Slavic are considered a different "race" (we, um, don't really use that word anymore in German, for obvious reasons), but I do know that there is quite often the talk about someone having "Slavic features" (as, I would guess, is the case in Slavic countries with people saying someone has "Germanic features"). I can't really describe what this encompasses (the internet would know, I think, but I don't feel like sorting through all kinds of racist bullshit), but in my head I kind of know what it means.
Basically, just like the Southern Europeans in general have a certain kind of look, and the Northern Europeans, so have the Eastern Europeans. *shrugs*

Cool. I did this with US Abassadorship once in one of his history threads. 'Twas quite entertaining for a while.

And Balts and Ugrics and Romani.Sorbs and Wendish are west of the German border. In fact, there's street signs here that are in Sorb, and Sorbians are Slavic. Not to mention, I'm rather sure Brandenburg is still part of Germany.

Yeah, but there were Slavs before Genghis and folks came to Eastern Europe and violently impregnated every single Russian lass they could get their hands on and gave them all those funny Mongolian looking eyes.

See?
The ones before that probably didn't look all that different to their Viking ancestors. :p
(hows that for squashing political correctness?)
So eh. I find that the difference is a lot less marked when it comes to Poles and Germans, though. It's just an arbitrary construct in that instance, except for the language thing.

You make it way too complex.
The Bavarian worldview is a whole lot simpler: you either are Bavarian or you are not. If you are not Bavarian then you must be a Prussian. And Prussians cannot be trusted.

Um, well, no. IMHO, many Poles look actually pretty Slavic. In fact, I had specifically mentioned Poles and Russians in my post above but then decided to go with the more general Eastern European. *shrug*
Oh, but just to be sure - I don't see why this should have any effect on anything, really.

Do you think so? I guess your location would give you a better idea, but I meet a lot of blonde-haired blue-eyed people of Polish descent, and they don't look too different from the Germans i've met. Eh, you're right though, it doesn't really matter. :p
(Heh, let's put this in practice though - out of curiousity, do I look more German or Slav?)

What kind of stupid-ass question is that?
First of all, I thought your ancestors were mixed.
Second of all, it's just a stupid-ass question - do I look German?
Third of all (can you even say that?), you haven't even put up a decent picture.
Go look in a mirror and you tell me.

I have heard (no idea if it's valid) that Slavs tend to have less pronounced cheek bones than do those of Germanic lineage.
