Was Jesus killed on Wednesday?

If you read the scriptures and notice things like when Jesus left the city and returned it seems you come out with Wednesday. He arrived on Sunday, taught and generally ticked off the authorities on Mon and Tue. (He would have been captured and tried during the Tue-Wed night) Then John says it was before a "special" Sabath, not the weekly Sabbath. (Possibly the Feast of Unleaven Bread?) Then when the women come to the grave, they bring spices they bought and prepared. They couldn't have done that on Saturday. The only possibility is they rested on Thursday for the special Sabbath, shopped and prepared on Friday, rested again on the weekly Sat. Sabbath, the first chance to deliver would be Sunday Morning. Finally Jesus said the only sign he would give was three days and three nights. So if he were buried at sundown on Wed. that night would be one, Thur-Fri night would be two, Fri-Sat night would be three. Thur would be one day, Friday two days, Sat. three days.....He arose at sundown Sat. Notice he was gone and the soldiers were gone by Sun AM.

Has anyone else really read and considered what Jesus did each day? I see some conservative timelines that skip a day and say he did nothing on one day. That doesn't seem logical that he would do nothing for no reason.

In dealing with Hebrew and the system for counting days back then, when you said "three days", you counted today.

So, if today is Friday and I said to you, "I'll do it in 3 days", that would mean I'd be doing whatever it was on Sunday.

Just FYI.

Oh, and to answer that, from what I've read he was beaten a lot. Either that or he played bridge. Hard to tell with translations. The real passion of Jesus: card games.

Strip Poker might've put his captors in a better mood. Could've saved his life. :p

So where are the three nights?

A Hebrew day is a night and then a day. The whole 24 hours. It was translated to "3 days and 3 nights" to keep up with more Greek sensibilities and solar calendars. It was just the "couple of days" though.

Sort of like the old "40 days and 40 nights" routine. That's not exact. In the Hebrew, it's sort of like an English speaking person saying "it was fuckin' forever, man".

In my opinion, Jesus got what he deserved. He was a criminal and all. Why should I worship a criminal?

The law and personal morality can be very different things. For example, if you live in China, you're not allowed free speech by law, but your personal morality may dictate that free speech is essential to peace of mind. Jesus was kind of like that. He went against the law, but he did what he thought was right.

im an atheist.

Some US Baptists (among others, I'm sure) agree with you.

As far as I'm concerned, whatever some religion thinks of something in the Bible, there's bound to be someone who will disagree.

Didn't the bad guys not want the body left on the cross for the Passover (which begins Friday night)?

Here's a good one. Medical opinion has it death from Crucifixion could take days and in order to speed up the process, a person legs need be broken. Jesus's -unlike his counterparts- were not broken.

He only 'died' after being given suspicious mix of wine.

Even many theologians concede there was no physical cause for the death of Jesus.

Given we now know there are many chemicals -some of which were available to many of the religious cults that contemporary writers claim Jesus may have been involved in- that induce a state much like death...

Well, you draw your own conclusions.

This is like Christmas being in summer, it's irrelevant.

You forgot the part where he was stabbed in the side with a spear........

I'm not too sure anyone is just going to walk away from that one.

He was stabbed after he was dead. Why did he die so soon?

Passover is based on the moon not on the day of the week. John 19:31 says it was before "high day" not the weekly Sabbath.

the sabbath begins friday night. Passover has no set starting date in the solar calendar.

I think the trouble is that you're trying to mix two different calenders. The Jewish calender has been modified from the calender used in Jesus day to better coincide with the preferred Gregorian calender. Also, Easter is a special Sabbath for the Christians but it still lies on Sunday: could it not be the same with the Jewish special Sabbath?

Or am I wrong?
