Question for the Brits on British bands!

Naliitr

Ok, I just want to see if a number of British bands famous in America are as famous in Britian. I have two bands that come to the top of my head right now. Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand. Are either of them actually famous in their homeland?

Yes, very much so.

Pretty much ruling the airwaves. There isn't really a British band / artist that is successful in the US and not successful in the UK

Indeed.

FF aren't so bad as Coldplay. Interestingly, they both did fairly good debut albums, then have produced shit and bilge since then.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Parachutes. A Rush of Blood to the Head had one or two good songs on it, and X&Y is tripe.

As for FF...never particularly liked their first album, except for Take Me Out (and even then Biffy Clyro did a cover (http://www.biffierthanthou.com/music/Session%20-%20BBC%20R1%20-%20Zane%20Lowe%20160205/Take%20Me%20Out%20(Cover)%20160205%20BBC1%20Zane%20Lowe.mp3) that shames the original)

Franz Ferdinand seriously need to consider purchasing a personality for themselves. I mean, they obviously can't come up with one on their own...

That is a good cover. Is it typical of Biffy? I've never really bothered to get into them, because I've only heard a couple of their songs (Glitter & Trauma, and that cover), and they're not really what I'm into.

FF's first album wasn't great. I liked Take Me Out, Auf Asche, and Come on Home. Like I said, it was fairly good, and a lot better than some indie out there (I'm looking at the Kaiser Chiefs here).

I would say fairly typical of their third album. Each album has a different sound though, so it's hard to say anything beyond that.

I think you'd really like the stuff off The Vertigo of Bliss, going by what you usually post in those "what bands do you like?" threads.

(That cover was recorded completely live for Radio 1, by the way, here (http://www.biffierthanthou.com/music/Session%20-%20BBC%20R1%20-%20Zane%20Lowe%20160205/Only%20one%20word%20comes%20to%20mind%20-160205%20BBCR1%20Zane%20Lowe.mp3) is a link to a version of their song Only One Word Comes to Mind from that session.)

Franz were pretty good when I saw them live a couple of months ago, though. But it's a telling sign when they mostly play their old stuff...

Personally I like both, X&Y was very good, and FF first one was brilliant-but there second wasn't as good. A few british bands you might have heard of-

Artic Monkeys
Kizer Cheifs
The Killers
The Clash (:D)
The jam
Led Zep...

It's an album that needs a few listens before you properly begin to 'get it', because most of the time there's so much going on that you don't notice until you think you know it inside out...and then it just opens up on a whole new plain.

It may be a combination of the two, brought upon by the brain-neurone shredding abilities of Chico and his catchy numbers.

Sort of relevantly - here's a great UK band you'll probably not heard of in the USA - The Smiths!

Order their C.D.s now!

Bit of both. It's nice to see artists who don't take themselves entirely seriously. In many ways as long as they are having fun I'm happy with it. If music is a job to you then it seeps through, if you're really having a laugh and a good time then it comes out.

The real reason I stopped liking Blink-182 was that their last album just sounded like they all wrote it in seperate studios because they refused to go within 100 miles of each other whereas Enema, Take Off and Cheshire Cat (hell, even Box Car Racer to some extent) all sounded like they were enjoying writing and performing.

I'd be worried if America hadn't heard of the Smiths. Not because I think they're a great band - they're ok with some good bits - but because they were absolutely frikkin' massive. And there are some Americans with varied musical taste on this forum. Honest.

Pete Doherty is not a pretentious wanker. He's a crackwhore wanker. He's too fucking stupid to be pretentious.

Seriously, that waste of space is pretty much the only thing that can get me wound up. What sort of person admires someone who goes to court on multiple charges of drug possession, assaults a journalist on the courthouse steps, gets released on probation, and then gets arrested two days later on charges of drug possession?!

I thought Mark was in it too? Meh, I didn't pay much attention TBh, the only one I care about to any extent was Travis 'cos he's a damn good drummer.

It had more than half Blink's lineup and was pretty much the middlegrund between the early stuff and the stuff I pretend didn't happen.

Well, aside from the obvious (65daysofstatic) I could mention...hmm...Electric Wizard, who are probably obscure enough that I can be pretentious and such by making this pointless response without anyone knowing what i'm talking about. Yay!
