How disabled is disabled enough?

A man with no legs was told that he had to report to a job picking asparagus. Somehow I don't think most asparagus fields are wheelchair-friendly. Also a woman with no arms or legs was denied full benefits for "not being disabled enough".

It is not the first time the German welfare office has come under fire for its treatment of people with disabilities.

Last year a woman with no arms and no legs was told she could not get full handicapped benefits because she was not disabled enough.
WHAT? Do you need to be in a coma or something? Unreal

And here I was hoping they'd pay me for having ADD. :(

I'm actually surprised at how far the germans have come.

Really. This is a huge step forward for them. Not so long ago they were putting the disabled into execution camps, now they are just denying them social security.

So a big thumbs up.

I suppose you'd have to have no arms, no leg, be blind, be deaf and have diabetes to be classified as disabled ...

So a big thumbs up.

Oddly, you hear a lot about how the German welfare budget is bloated and needs cutbacks, and then you hear how you have to practically dead before you get on it.

This means either:

A) The world is mad.
B) I'm insane.

Neither is a pleasant option.

Do you realize what that means?

Germany is recovering from concentration camps and screwing over minorities and handicpes and what not during world war 2. They killed 6 million innocent people, thats a tough habit to break. Give them a break, they will get over theyre filthy bias eventually.

I guess it's easier here in the states. I was accepted as disabled the first try. I can actually do some work, as long as an employer is understanding enough to let me have a few months off here and there for periodic meltdowns.

Well, just recently I saw a video taping of a kid skateboarding, doing some amazing trick, failing (why else would it have been aired  ), breaking both arms upon landing and being rushed to a hospital. Before the story continues, I'd like to indicate this happened in the US.

As he got to the hospital he had to fill in some insurance forms. Obviously this was quite impossible since he had broken both his arms. If you have ever had a broken arm you know that using it, while it's broken, hurts. Bad.

Nevertheless the still had to fill in and sign the forms. His friends weren't allowed to do it for him.

As I watched that my mouth fell wide open and my facial expression would've been soething like this. (http://www.orlyowl.com/rutrippin.jpg)

Believe me, I do try to fit in.. However my way of looking at it: if it can make your life a bit more easy..why the hell not?
You all would do the same; taking advantage of services that are there for you to use if you're disabled.

Damn, that sucks about that kid. However, I'm not surprised given all these privacy laws and such.

It's good info for the next time a European talks about his "superior" welfare system. :)

Well, I don't think the Netherlands have much of a welfare system left in any case

Really though, you can't blame the germans for this. It's clearly something they were forced into against their will because Britian had a large navy in 1896.

Pal, you know this is what a lot of folks want in place in the U.S. It's only a matter of time until they get it, too.

Firstly: I live in Germany

Now about our welfare system, it actually is quite bloated. If you are unemployed and get social help, you have nowadays even a right on tv, telefone and a pc with internet. :headbang:

Hell, i know even a bugger who wont work, because he has all he wants without the need working for it (and there are many of those) :headbang:

You just have to know how to exploit the whole system, like living at your parents house for rent, let the state pay for it, since you are poor, and then
share the money with your parents. :headbang:

You hear about those cases mentioned earlier in the thread, because they are exeptions of the rule. If i have the choice of being poor in Germany and being poor in America, i choose Germany all the way, thank you.

A man with no legs was told that he had to report to a job picking asparagus

I also heard about this case. The Arbeitsamt was acting on old data, and after being informed, they of course took the order back.

PS I really like that head bang smilie

Exactly. I'm only using these services until I've graduated. Then I'll have a job, and get my own money, at which time I'll stop receiving benefits.
