What exactly IS music, anyway?

As we all know, everyone typically tends to define music in a different way. Me, I like so called classical music, modern instrumental music--for example, some of the Star Trek music, the Pirates of the Caribbean theme, ect.--big bang, jazz, alternative and classic rock, yet I completely despise rap, hip hop, and any other variation, as I feel they are simply bad poetry with a beat to them.

But, that's just my own definition. With so many varying definitions, one really has to ask what truly makes music. I thought it a worthy topic of discussion. So, I ask: what exactly is music anyway?

(Anyone spouting off a smartass answer regarding mathamatical arrangements of sounds and I will beat you with a trout.)

Music is a term that, like many others, loses its meaning if you try to define it too closely. Language is based very much on associations, not just on technical definitions.

Thank you, Ifreann, for completely missing the point. I wasn't asking for a dictionary definition. I was attempting to provoke a thoughtful discussion. ~__~

Oh wait you were asking what is music?

I'd say music is a language.

(Or in fact, several languages, since some people might like (understand) a certain type of music but not another. Of course you can understand a type of music and still not like it because of what it "says" to you, but anyway...)

(That's a long parenthesis (including sub-parenthesis) there... :) )

Music can be used for example to convey and enhance a message, a feel or emotions. It is also often used as a part of defining different (sub-)cultural groups to create a sense of belonging. Much like a regular language.

Then the music gotta be loud

Music is a window into the soul.

Or at least, thats what I decided while listening to Pink Floyd on acid.

Essentially, music can be defined as the art of organizing sound in time. Music is like shaping sound the way one shapes a sculpture, perhaps.

Yeah, but just because you despise rap doesn't mean it's not music.

Music is what it is - you seemed to ask for a definition, a dictionary does that very well. Much better than people who will define music by what they like. If you just wanted preferences you should have just asked what kind of music everyone liked.
