Best Fried Chicken Ever!
I recently had the best Fried Chicken in my whole life. It was at a joint in K.C. named Stroud's.
I really love resturants that specialize in one thing and do it very well. Since I travel a lot, I would love to hear about your favorite specialty joints.
Another one I really love is Ted's Hot Dogs in Tempe, AZ.
And Obryckis Crabs in Baltimore.
There's also a tiny BBQ place in Muskogee that I still dream about. I can't remember what it was called though. It was near the highway exit across the street from a movie theatre. Anybody know it?
Please share your food-nirvana locations with me.

I'm glad Stroud's has touched somebody.
Did you get in to the old-school one before they bulldozed the area? Or were you at the second location?
There's also a Stroud's in Wichita, it's by far the most comfy, large and open atmosphere, but nothing could be better than the original.

I didn't realize it was a franchise. Now I'm bummed. I thought it was unique. The Stroud's I went to was right near where we golfed. I believe it was called Maple Creek.

It's not franchise. There are three in existence, the three I listed, all owned by the same family. All have the same recipe. None, however, will share this damn recipe, so I can never emulate their chicken exactly right.
I think you went to the good one with the best service, if my memory of where the hell Maple Creek is......

Mmm...Stroud's is indeed good. However, for true KC food nirvana, it's all about Gates BBQ. Yum. :)

Yish....in twenty years, I've never been able to get into Gates all that much. Just not my style, I suppose.
Have I discovered another Kansas Citian?

Hey, if you're not into Gates, there's always the 90 or so other BBQ places in the area to try... :p
And yes, you have indeed.

Oooh, ooh, let's not threadjack, but TG me or IM me if you wanna talk. If not, no biggie....I just love when I meet locals on General. Makes me feel better that somebody else is getting the Midwest Experience from my point of view :p
Everybody in KC had raves about Gates - But I didn't go. Instead I went to a place called Oklahoma Joe's. It was great.

Little do you know, everybody raves about that place too :p You've fallen into our trap, Gartref! Surely the tables have turned!
Still un-stalking me, right?
The Stroud's near Troost closed right?

We like to call it "relocating" so as to not scare the alleged "tourists" (though I've never seen any), but yes.....that location is closed. They're putting a damn road there instead.
ETA: I guess "we" includes you too.....I didn't look at the poster name, sorry. So, erm....CONFORM.

I would agree to stalk or unstalk you - if you would just fedex a strouds family dinner to me. It sucks that my food fetishes are so regional. I'm literally a thousand miles from the nearest blue crab and can you believe that there is not a decent fried chicken chicken joint in the entire Phoenix friggin valley. And don't even get me started on Tastykakes. Why the frick don't they have Tastykakes out here?

Nice. Missourians love their roads.

Aw. I know the feeling - I lived in New England for a couple of years, and it is absolutely impossible to get even passable barbecue there. Then I moved back to the Midwest, where it has so far been impossible to get even passable sushi. Darn those delicious regional foods.

If you're ever in D.C., look for a place called Red, Hot & Blue. From what I understand, there are other places of the same name in the Ohio Valley, but I believe that the D.C. one is not part of any chain.
Absolutely amazing food!

We had that down in Wichita, too. Cajun place, if memory serves.....or at least Southern food (though it might be a different chain for all I know). Amazing, if it's the same place you're talking about. Wonderful.

Fried chicken... Bleh to most of it. It's only good when it's done right, and when it doesn't have enough grease to fill a bucket.

If your ever on the east-coast of scotland and are in Montrose or Aberdeen(Yeah, Right) I reccomend you pay a visit to Roo's Leap - its an australian themed restaurant much like TGI Fridays with objects hanging off the walls, they have some surfboards and didgereedoo's (sp?) on the ceiling for instance.
And as the for the food?, if you like gourmet burgers your in a for a treat if you've got an empty stomach you ought to have a 'Monster Bob Burger' - finishing it? - for me its an achievment.

I have to agree with Strouds chicken. I always liked the south place under the bridge. But they are planning on expanding the bridge and taking it down. That old building made the place. Hope they find another old building.
I also like Lamberts at Ozark MO or Sikeson. Home of "throwed" rolls. Never go away empty. They just keep bringing more food if your plate is empty.
Also used to like the fish place south of Port Arthur TX that was between the oil refinery and Sea Rim State Park. last time I was down there they moved it into the city and it wasn't quite as good but still the best sea food I've had. Something about old buildings vs. modern buildings seems to change the food.
For steaks (Don't know it it's still there) Bud's B&M Steak House in Comstock NE. Comstock is on a dead end road. Only one reason to go there.
Also for chicken, The Nunnery between Urich and Appleton City MO. Actually in an old Nunnery in the middle of the country. Just a church and old strip mine in the area.
Almost forgot Margie's in Spearfish SD. Haven't been there in years, but the appitizer plate and steaks are great.
