Jocabia says Goodbye

Well, folks, I've been slowly tapering off my interaction on the forums. I'm obsessive and it was simply eating up too much of my time. I finally have to simply draw the line and move away from the keyboard. Life is getting in the way and, to be honest, I can't say I'm upset about it.

I suspect some people seeing this are letting out a quiet sigh of relief. To those people, I offer giggles.

NationStates has made more annoyed, more angry, more disappointed than every other aspect of my life combined over the last couple of years. I've loved every minute of it.

In order to speak on many of the threads I've become interested in, I've had to do tons of research and, as a result, NS has driven me to become very educated on a wide variety of subjects. My gratitude for this is boundless.

I have met many people I consider quite dear to me and many who, to be honest, I'll be glad to never encounter again. I wouldn't trade any of it.

I've always been involved in charity but the people here at NS have made me realize I've been treating a symptom of the problem instead of the problem. I'm much more politically motivated and I intend to become active and changing these issues instead of just bitching about them and helping the victims. Again, I'm grateful.

I would like to personally thank Max(x) Barry, but I doubt I'll ever get that opportunity. Changing the world doesn't always require strong political leaders, hunger strikes and a willingness to suffer for change. Sometimes all it takes a weird guy sitting at a computer trying to think of a way to pay his bills without getting out of his chair. The world is lucky to have this particular weird guy. Thanks, Max.

To the mods, thank you for all your hard work making this game and the forums into a place that allows all of us to come here and do what we do. I believe in the rules you all enforce and the way that you enforce them. I have personally seen how your actions help make the forums a cleaner place for the exchange of ideas. The next time I'm out for a beer I'll have one for y'all and giggle because I think about half of you aren't old enough to drink.

I'm going to continue to maintain my nation because I founded a region and need to protect the natives and I'll be around for approximately another week and probably lurking a bit afterward, but for the most part I won't be posting. Keep having intelligent debates, and if not intelligent make them amusing. I'll be reading them and learning.

Thanks, everyone.

Eric

TG me if you'd like to talk outside of NS. I'm quite happy to email, I just can't get involved in general debates anymore.

Yay! NS has spurred you on to fight the good fight as well! I wonder if any of us will truly leave NS forever...I remember making the same declaration as you about six months ago, but anyway! I'll miss you, and I hope you keep yourself inspired in Real Life. If you need a jolt now and again...whether it be anger, lust or giggles, come back for a bit. I'm not going to say good-bye again...when I start Law School I probably won't have much time here, but I bet anything I'll sneak in once in a while, and I'm sure you will too:)

Well, to be fair, I'm not actually leaving. I just intend to quit posting. And, trust me, if I have the choice between posting and making out with my girlfriend. you guys lose. Work is getting too busy. And I can't stand half participating. I won't post unless I have the time to research my subject or time to read all of the replies and that's the rub. I can't do it. I simply don't have time. So unless my personality changes dramatically, I don't believe I'll be around here posting with any regularity whatsoever. I hope you guys keep having fun, because reading the threads is something I intend to keep doing.

Thanks for calling me a liar though. ;)

Sin, you've done a lot to inspire me. You have a gift and I hope that you finish law school and use it. You have a way to continue to correspond with me and I hope you use that too. If nothing else, perhaps you'll make some law contacts that will be able to come bail me out after I get thrown in jail for refusing to obey laws that violate my civil rights.

Uh, I mean, ignore that last sentence.

'Bye Joc... it's been fun. The circa-first NS General Election period, especially. Pity none of the rest of us (well, almost none) have the inspiration or motivation to actually leave for a minute or two and do something IRL.

And when... er, if you do get into jail for civil disobedience, I'll use my immense power and influence to either get you out or keep you there in awful tortures for all eternity... depending on the mood. Cheers you up knowing that, doesn't it? :)

Thanks Joc...(I know all this saccharine lovey dubby stuff is going to make some people gag, so I warn those people to stop reading)...you've helped calm me down a bit, and to think things out more thoroughly. It's been tough, because sometimes I just want to lash out, but you've helped me keep things in perspective, and that has helped me in real life as well. And hey, you're one of the USians on board here that have forever freed me of my blanket hatred of USians, so you've 'saved' your countrypeople from any future blanket wrath on my part.

It's true what you've said about NS...it really pushes you to get your facts...or just come right and admit that you don't actually feel like being factual or rational that day. Some of the conversations here really make my brain twist around, and I can sure get caught up in convoluted semantics and interpretations, but it's good mental exercise. My feminism, my aboriginality, my respect for diversity (especially sexual/gendered issues) has really solidified, and that has helped hone my purpose as well. You've helped in all of that...oh yeah...I'm not as scared of Christians anymore either:)

So yes, I'll keep in touch...if anything, you can at least have my card when I pass the bar and tell people, "Yeah, this is my Canadian lawyer bitch!"

Ah, what the hell?

Nationstates is going to be a poorer place to debate, in your absence, my friend. If for no other reason than it drives some people CRAZY that you and I can agree on so much stuff, despite our 'differences'.

Good luck on the 'doing good works' thing.

In a round about way, yes.

However, I wanted to account for frequency of posts and the time length of posting, and this is the quickest way to make the equation come out with reasonable results.

EDIT: You got a little over two weeks, Joc.

Triple Dog Dare me, why don't you? You're right that NS is a bit of an addiction for me so I won't ever stop reading it, I think. However, I wanted to say this, because NS has meant a lot to me and I wanted people like you to know it. I'm not lying when I say I feel lucky to have 'met' so many of the people I have on NS. It's particularly because you all mean so much to me and have changed me so much that I have to go and do something about it.

That's a ridiculous idea. No one would believe it for a second. Besides, I'm not a writer.

Always fight the good fight, here and everywhere else.

Once my status is sorted, I'm actually intending to expand my 'fight the good fight' platform some, so don't be too surprised to see a big, scary, English Viking running for some political office. Maybe not in Georgia, though... I might have to relocate if I actually want to do any good.

Maybe one day I'll even inspire you to be saved. That'd be something, huh?

I told you I'm 'saved' already, right?

On the idea of coming 'back to the flock', however, I'm not going to say a definite 'no', and you are more than welcome to keep trying to save my soul... but I don't think it's likely.

If you have to keep ministering to me, in order to keep in touch, however... then, yes, I'm feeling a crisis of faith. :)

I'm considering doing the same, though I worry that it might expose some of the skeletons my family keeps in the closet. I've been struggling with that lately.

I don't minister. My goal is and always been to soften the hearts of everyone that I can so that the scripture and our Lord may speak to them. Unfortunately, there are so many that let their pride and arrogance drive them to harden the hearts of those who might hear. When has hurling accusations about how everyone who disagrees with you is destroying the world ever managed to do anything other than harden hearts.

*cough* I mean, thanks. I'm not going to start a debate here... on purpose.

If we meet up in Atlanta, or some nearby town, we might even be able to make a small NS gathering... I know Dempublicents and Peech are both (fairly) local... and I believe Vittos is now somewhere in the state... but I don't know which end...

I'm considering doing the same, though I worry that it might expose some of the skeletons my family keeps in the closet. I've been struggling with that lately.

It's a risk... and, from what I can tell... they WILL LOOK for any kind of dirt they can find.

Of course, Clinton is a classic example that if you just say 'SO?' confidently enough, a hsitory of scandal is not automatically bad...

But - If I really want to influence people, and make changes for the better, I'm going to have to get my hands dirty, and devil-take-the-hindmost.

Well, I'm not going to be swayed by those 'You are a SEENN-AH and you must REPEY-ENT' arguments... that's just snake-oil, and I'm surprised that still works on anyone these days... ah, but you just can't underestimate people enough, sometimes.

If anything would reach me, it WOULD be the example of Christians living Christlike lives... but, heathen though I am... I live a sight more 'christlike' a life, than MOST of the 'christians' I know...

You have been one of the people on here who has made me the most annoyed and angry during debate at times, but also someone I know I have quite a bit in common with. You remind me of some of my friends in that regard. While I don't tend to change much on an issue during a given discussion, much of what you have said has given me food for thought, and eventually modified my position on some issues. I still say that the reason we argued so much was that we tended to agree on the big things, but the devil is in the details. =)

Good luck with your girlfriend and your work - and attempting to stay out of NS General. ((Can't remember if I ever said congratulations in the thread where you told us about your big event at work)).

You're in the first, and I've noticed that you tend to hold a position for the duration of the debate and then modify it to a stronger position for the next debate. It's frustrating at times, but I understand why you do it and I respect that you drink these debates in and use them to form your opinions and beliefs. Very respectable.

You are definitely in the first category and I'll try to make sure that I give enough warning when I end up in Atlanta so we can all get together and have lunch or dinner or a drink or do cartwheels or something like that.

That's ok - I didn't know you were in GA at all, and it turns out you're quite close to where I live - Dallas. Grave is in the state, I believe, but further north-east of Atlanta.

I haven't been down here long, but I have been to Dallas many times. My aunt and uncle live there.

In fact I may be even closer than you think as I live in the Paulding County part of Acworth.

Yes, but I've had fewer and fewer outbreaks and I think I'm about to go into remission. All I have to do is eat healthy and keep my stress levels down and it may never come back. ;)

I think we should all get together and take over a county. We could spread like a virus, or perhaps a cure.

Strangely, I've had a similar thought, myself... although I was think it might have to be somewhere like Wyoming, to get a low enough population to push it.

But, the reason that idea occured... you only NEED to get one 'representative' elected to actually start having some official 'weight', at which point you can start pushing issues like religious tolerance, and sexual freedom into the public eye.

And, you stand on a 'controversial' platform like that... the more 'fascistic' elements actually do half your work for you, in their attacks on your platform.

For the record, the way threads work when you put the topic in the title is that people who are not interested in discussing the topic can just skip over it. The topic of this thread is clear so it should only attract people who want to actually say goodbye.

I've never in all of my years here figured out why people find it so important to go into a thread to tell us why they don't want to discuss the topic.

There are a few people I've hospitalized in my lifetime who would argue that it is a ruse. That aside, being kind is very important to me. I've got a lot to make up for in my life and I would be wronging the people that saved me by not living up to my potential on that end.

Even beyond that, I want the world to encourage the people who are like the people who saved me and currently it doesn't. It's because of those people I'm here with the power to make a difference instead of a statistic.

I intend to use my presence to make the world better for them, for people like them and for myself. I believe that starts first and foremost by being kind.

Unfortunately, I'm flawed and I often find myself being kind of an arse. I've admitted as much in many threads and I admit it here as well. I argue with a lot of passion, but even a player whose ideas I've attacked vehemently and viciously in one or many threads would get a lift from me if they tripped, a meal if they were hungry, a strong back if their load was too heavy or a shoulder if they needed to shed a tear.

I do it because I believe attitudes really are contagious and I know that these are all things I've needed in the past and will need in the future, as will my family, my friends, all of you. Among the plethora of reasons I am who I am, I do it because somebody is going to and it might as well be me.

I'm quite happy to email, I just can't get involved in general debates anymore.
that sucks, my condolances

Thanks. I really do plan to run for office once I get everything figured out.

As do I... if I can manage to convince Georgians to vote for a Limey. :)

I'm not sure how Sarkhaan can vote for BOTH of us, though... unless he's registered to vote in two different areas.... ;)

I'll be sorry to see you go. Intelligent debate here is a rare commodity, and those who can make their points without resorting to name calling even rarer still. And you have always been a class act for the most part. Thank you for all your contributions. This forum is a better place for your having been here.

Then you'd be among the lost.

Not really. There are always liberals around to tell you where to go.

And, of course, your own party, given its joined-at-the-hip (*nudge*) status with the apocalyptic fundamentalists. :D

Don't even know how you feel about penguins...

I bumped a couple of good threads, but in my very BIASED opinion there are very few threads there not worth taking a look at.

I noticed. I'm Tienji there, in case you didn't figure it out.

By the way, this thread has shown exactly why I don't feel arrogant in creating it. I suspected I would get all the usual suspects saying goodbye and pretty much no one else. I'm not Tink and I know it. I didn't think creating a thread would actually make people come out of the woodwork crying about the loss of Jocabia.

Ha. I'm sure you did. I'll still be reading threads. I've very much enjoyed NS. It's a great game and the forums are truly run well. Despite the objections of my some people who don't like me much, I think the mods do an excellent job of keeping it relatively clean and civil.

TG revenge.

I've been on a few forums... and NS Gen has been one of the very highest quality I've seen, with (perhaps not coincidentally), some of the very worthiest adherents. It shall be a shame to see you go. The Army of Light will be that much poorer in our conflicts, from now on.

I'm sure you'll be fine and I would argue the same about NS. I think they did an excellent job of creating a playground for a varied group of people looking to interact with others in very real way. I can't say enough about the efforts of Max Barry and the mods at creating and enforcing the rules.

Nooooooo! [ hopes he's not one of those you'll be happy to miss! ] :(

Eut, you are one of the few personalities I actually talk about to REAL people. I will be happy to miss you, but only because it means I have sense enough to miss you. I don't always agree with you, but I do respect you. You make think of some of the Master Sergeants that used to annoy me with their views but who I think about all the time now that I'm no longer in their unit. Given the opportunity, I'd serve under those guys or you anytime (hopefully to hand out food to the hungry or help put out sandbags or something).

Okay, week's up. Thanks, everybody.

"The End" is playing in my head and I thought it was repeating until I realized it's just that long and I'm obsessive enough that I have to actually let the entire thing play.
