What Martial Art do You Practice?

I apologize if there's some thing similar, but I was wondering how many NS'ers practice martial arts, and, if they do, which type.

Personally, I train and practice Systema, the Russian Martial Art, under the guidance of Sascha Lutz, who trained under Vladmir Vasiliev.

Jujitsu and Krav Maga, both which pwn all. I have no idea who my instructors trained under, but they seem to know their shit, so that's good enough for me.

I practice dirty fighting, trained by those heartwarming yet mischievous comedies about revenge where the bad guy's dirty tricks are invariably used againts him to save the day. But with more biting.

I did Kyokushinkai Karate for several years.

EDIT: I'm not sure if it counts as "traditional" or not, as the emphasis is strongly upon on combat techniques rather than set kata (though kata are still a part of it). I picked that anyway.

Eh, you can never have enough biting. Or eye-gouging, as my kickboxing friend taught me.

I'm a master of the ancient art of "Kick them in the balls, grab their wallet, and run like Hell." In this combat discipline, I have trained under many masters, the greatest of which was Tommy "Ass-goblin" Martinez, who trained David "Jesus "Fucking" Christ" Witcher (The only man from Virginia to have a nickname within his nickname).

I used to practice Lee Jun Fan gung fu/JKD, Kali (Inosanto method), Pentjak Silat, and something called "Mixed Grappling" which incorporated Machado Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, as well as striking, takedowns and locks from the other arts taught in the school.

I guess that means I studied some traditional and some MMA arts. Unfortunately now my schedule prevents me from keeping up my studies. I'm considering looking for a different job.

I took a bizzare form of Karate a long time ago. It was based on the self defence of some remote island peoples' in the middle of no-where, and made extensive use of... canoe paddles. Didn't stick around for too much of that though.

That's kind of interesting... it looks really similar to Systema. Is there alot of knife/weapon/gun disarming in your class?

Yep. Although we focus more on knives and broken bottles and such, with guns being a rarity around here.

I've read books on everything I could find (a few of the MA's in here I couldn't find and have never heard of) from Ninjitsu to JKD to Shaolin. Never professionally trained under anyone, though I tend to overanalyze the physics of everything, especially in MA movies (and I take into account the wire factor) - I'm pretty good at estimating how much force it'll take to pull something off, and delivering it with momentum and speed.

Course, I'm a lover, not a fighter. ... Okay, that's a lie - I've just had more of a chance to love than fight. Which isn't bad, but I become kind of antsy if I don't release some of that energy/aggression/spirit whatever you want to label it, whatever it is that drives me to want to combat another person (or multiple people).

So yeah - unless I dropkick my fiancee, I'm gonna keep leaning more into the lover side.

I was talking to a Krav Maga instructor just yesterday. The subject of knives came up and he commented that he hates knives, he just knows how to take them away from people. I hope he never actually has to try. I don't want him getting killed. In Kali we trained with knives and we trained knife disarms. Trying to disarm a person with a knife who has any training whatsoever is very difficult and risky. This instructor seemed to think it would be a piece of cake.

Broken bottles eh? Heh. We havn't had any gun disarming either, though I'm rather anxious to try it out. Most of our knife work is being blind folded, and then evading and propperly rotating your body so the knife inflicts minimal damage. Most of this is done "at contact", meaning we aren't allowed to move untill we actually feel the blade. Personally I find it difficult to stay calm and relaxed while being poked with five or six knives. I've learned *alot* about how my body moves though. It's interesting that your body knows what to do more than your mind does.

When you consider the sheer odds against someone having a knife, pulling it on you, and knowing how to use it, your risk drops exponentially. Most people seem to think that exaggerated over-handed (ala Psycho) swinging is good for much more than generating breeze.

Well, if some one is trained to use a knife, it's going to be a real bastard getting it from him. Even from our training, when I spar with another systema practitioner, it's difficult, because both of us know exactly what the other guy is going to try to do. But I have to agree with his ideals of just removing the knife. I don't think I'd ever pick one up in a fight. From what I've learned so far in Systema, having a weapon is simply another method for us to take you down: With your own weapon.

Yeah they do. Also there are plenty of different styles of Kali, Arnis, and Escrima. You don't really know what your're going up against unless you know the style of Philipino martial arts the opponent knows. He might club you, box you (using elbows, knees, eye gouges and other dirty tricks), stab and slice you, start dislocating limbs, or any combination of the above.

What kinda bull is that? Someone rams a knife in your throat or intestines or privates with some force its to late to try to roll with the blow. Maybe you could survive with a bit of luck, if the assailant would misteriously stop after you roll on the floor bleeding and in pain. Bad thing must wont do. Thus training evasion blindfolded results a lot of sim-death.
I praticed Taekwondo for self-defense, not as a sport. More dirty tricks, no chance to compete even at local tournament level. Right now only medieaval swordfighting. And google-fu.

Tae Kwon Do, and the traditional IWF, not that silly WTF style. I also use nunchucks. Even when you use those things correctly, they really toughen up your arms. Out of all the Tae Kwon Do weapons, they look the coolest when you are skilled with them too.

I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and another in Shotokan, and a second degree in Tang Soo Do. I also have a good working knowledge of Aikijiujitzu and Hapkido (which are very similar, but not identical, and I've trained with different people in different schools in them). I'd also have at least one, if not two more Tang Soo Do degrees, but I had a kid, and absolutely refuse to train with the guy whose school I am going to. I like the local instructor great, but HIS instructor, with whom I would have to train, is an idiot. Sooo... ahwell.

I can't answer your poll because I currently practice 2 and have done 4 of the list.

Which Martial Art type do you practice/train?

PAST - TMA (Traditional Martial Arts), i.e. Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kun Do, Wing Chun etc

PAST - MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), i.e. Boxing and Aikido, Jujitsu and Kung Fu, etc

CURRENT - RSBD (Real Situation Based Defence) PraMek, Hurricane Combat System, Systema, Storm Warrior Krav Maga

Meh - I do not practice Martial Arts

Current - to a point. I own a gun, which I believe is not necessairly superior to all methods of H2H combat

A better poll would be nice... ;)
