I haven't watched TV in several months to over a year...(It's been so long that I can't recall the last time, anyway.)

Er, though I have some Red Dwarf DVDs scattered around my room. Do they count?

Battlestar Galactica

Rather interesting adaptation of the old series. The characters are continuously subjected to extreme situations.

Comes every Wednesday on RTL 2 at 20:15 CET (it's in German)

I watch "The Sopranos" on Sunday nights. The subject matter has always been close to me and on ths show, it takes place in my backyard-places I'm familiar with. Its full of people I can relate to.
I usually watch "24" on Monday nights. Its pretty interesting to me, fast paced, sometimes violent.
And now, On Tuesday nights, there is a new show called "The Unit". I'm starting to follow it-its been on a few weeks now and I think I've seen each episode.

Other than those, I dont watch much TV. I read in my spare time, if the kids are already asleep, that is.

House. 9 tonight on channel 5 (england). Unbelievably corny and predictable but the best thing since 24 was on proper tv and not stupid sky. Hugh Laurie for James Bond!

Sopranos are good. I'll be watching Deadwood when the new season starts. Spike TV shows Ultimate Fighting Championship events and the Ultimate Fighter reality show. I also occasionally watch WWE wrestling for the crazy characters and over the top storylines.
Gargantua City State

Stargate: SG-1
I really like the reruns, mostly for Colonel O'Neill. That guy kills me! I haven't seen much of the new show, because my schedule varies so much I rarely have time to sit down at a regular time of week to catch new episodes.
But the reruns are on Space at 1pm EST every weekday.
I like that it's sci-fi adventure set in present day. It feeds my enjoyment of action, evil politicians, sci-fi nerdiness, humour, and secret gov't military projects. Is there anything that show DOESN'T have??

Edit: It doesn't have pirates or ninjas... that I've seen. Everything else, though. :)

A pirate, the Boogeyman and people settling interpersonal disputes by hitting each other with folding chairs seem to be absent. That's why I watch WWE.

battlestar gallactica is very good. i like is so much i bought the 1st season dvd and plan to buy the second season also. its season is over but its on the scifi channel

lost is excellent. its amazingly good considering its from abc. how did that happen. if you havent watched it you should probably rent the first season dvds at the store. wait until you have enough time to watch 24 hours of tv, they are addicting. wednesday, abc. 8pm mountain time

the daily show is the best news program on the air. not because of exhaustive comment but because jon stewart is free to call bullshit at any time.

the colbert report is the best news commentary program on the air. his "hard hitting" interviews with authors and politicians are very revealing of the personality of the interviewees. its not easy for them to deal with a guy who it taking the piss while lobbing softball questions at them.

well OK they arent on the air, they are on basic cable. at my house they come on monday through thursday on comedy central at 9 pm.

dr who is finally on in the US. its not great but its fun. its on scifi on fridays

survivor and the amazing race are my favorite reality shows but if you are in despair over how sucky your life is, watch "wife swap" or "supernanny" a couple times and you will feel much better about yourself. ive only watched a few times but, whoa, there are some disfunctional families out there.

Hustle is on AMC at 10 PM Est, Saturdays (and an ass load of randomly selected times during the week).
The story isn't really that original (its another, group of experts in various fields come together as friends to overcome adversity. Once a week, to insure that you can predict every move they make by your 6th episode) and the idea behind a group of conartists that are always short on cash, yet land from 50 to 100 thousand pounds a week, is kind of stupid. Oh, and if you hate the "Thief with a heart of gold" cliche, then this show will give you five times the reason to vomit.
I watch it anyway because it can be funny and the episodes generally have neat little twist endings in the last 15 minutes or so.
Come to think of it, I really don't know why I watch it at all.

Battlestar is excellent. Got the Mini-Series, First Season and the first half of Second on disc already.

As far as Stargate goes, I prefer Atlantis. Bit harder edged than the original series, more like the movie.

I know I watch some things that aren't worth it just because they're on, but there are still some I like.

Lost. I really like it - but we're watching on DVD, and aren't "up-to-date" and I don't know if it keeps on being as good as it was. (In my case it's on whenever I put the DVD in.)

Alias. Again, on DVD, and whichever season it was we just finished wasn't as good as the first one or two or whatever it was. But it's great, if you suspend a few disbeliefs. (Again, on with a DVD)

Beauty and the Geek. I just find it hilarious. I also find it much easier to sympathise with the geeks than the beauties, of course. (Not on currently.)

Amazing Race. The one "reality show" which actually depends largely on skill, with a little luck thrown in. No voting, and popularity only depends how much other teams help or hurt you. Just good oldfashioned skill. (Just switched to Wednesdays at 8/9 central.)

Deal or No Deal. Only entertaining for me because my two year old loves yelling "NO DEAL!" at it and the idiots on the show all do no deal when they should just take it, and so frequently get busted for it... heh. (On a lot currently, at least in the US.)

Firefly. I only include this because it was a TV show, and OUGHT never to have been cancelled. I have no idea what sort of idiot network would kill their best show in years. (Not on... what a shame.)

I'm told 24 is worth watching, but that'll be another DVD one when we get around to it. I also sometimes watch Bones just because I like the main character - she is modelled off a real person, and sort of more believable than most. Plus, we're watching the current survivor mostly, just because I like Bruce. When he goes, we may quit. And I'm pretty sure he can't win. Really, none of it is worth the time, it's just the best of what's on. If only they'd kept Firefly.

Family Guy: If you're wondering why I like this, you really deserve to be slapped.

South Park: Quite possibly the best satirical show ever. Smart, funny, and never repetetive.

Futurama: It's dead (at the moment), but it's one of those shows that really stands the test of time. And who doesn't love Zoidberg?

Takeshi's Castle/MXC: It's a gameshow, yeah, but it's the best one ever. Watching people do ridiculous stunts and totally screw up 75% of the time makes for some of the best TV you'll ever see.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Pure stoner humor. It's even funny if you're not stoned, though not everyone will get the jokes and references.

Harvey Birdman - Attorney at Law: Birdman's a lawyer this time around, and he takes the cases of ancient Hannah - Barbera characters. Very funny stuff, and Phil Ken Sebben is classic.

The Boondocks: One of the most intelligent shows out there. Not yet has one episode been boring or stupid, and the socio-political message is quite good... If you can pick up on it.

Robot Chicken: If you don't have ADHD, this show will give it to you. That alone is reason enough to watch.

The Venture Brothers: A Mod art style, weird characters, and a funny plot make it great. A very original knock on the Johnny Quest series.

American Dad: Family Guy, but satirical. Just as funny (and sometimes better) than its counterpart.

Trigun: Great Anime. Vash the Stampede is one of the best protaganists ever, and the action is top-notch.

Cowboy Bebop: Bounty hunters who are great at what they do, but they never seem to get their quarry. It's pretty dark most of the time, and the final episode is perfect.

Monday: WWE wrestling: Raw
Tuesday: American Idol, Sex and the City
Wednesday: Drawn Together
Thursday: My Name is Earl, The Office, E.R.
Friday: sometimes stand-up comedy
weekends: assorted programs on TLC or Discovery Channel such as Clean Sweep, Mythbusters, Trading Spaces, etc

I would watch Star Trek: The Next Generation/Deep Space 9 reruns if I hadn't already seen every single episode of them ever.

I have to agree that most TV is rubbish. I mostly watch DVDs of shows from back in the day when a lot of television was simultaneously entertaining and clever. However, I do still watch 24, Top Gear, The Apprentice and the odd episode of The Simpsons, and Doctor Who will be back on in a few weeks. I've also released what an intellectual desert my life is since I enjoy Deal or No Deal. That's about it, really.

House: Hugh Laurie is a terrific actor, and his US accent is dead solid perfect. (Fox)
ER: Yeah, I know, but I can't stop watching it. (NBC)
Battlestar Galactica: As a kid I was hooked on the kitschy original, the writing and intrigue of this update is like getting to be a kid and an adult at the same time. While you're diggin back in to good writing, BRING BACK FARSCAPE, YOU ASSHOLES! (Sci-Fi)
Family Guy and South Park: Sharpest societal satire out there. (Cartoon Network's Adult Swim/Fox & Comedy Central)
Futurama: Sharp and clever -- hooray for new episodes! (Adult Swim/Fox)
Penn & Teller: Bullshit!: Skewering charlatans, phonies and sacred cows with accuracy and wit. (Showtime)
Assume the Position: Robert Wuhl demystifies US History by cutting through the sentimentality and revisionism. (HBO)
Venture Brothers: Brilliant send-up of Jonny Quest. (Adult Swim)
Robot Chicken: Eleven-second vignettes during which it is VERY unadvisable to attempt to swallow due to the choking hazard. Witness this scene:

Cut to little boy in doctor's office receiving an immunization by needle.

BOY (timidly): Will it hurt, doctor?
DOCTOR (Matter-of-factly): Only if God hates you.

Cut to next scene.

Now that's just plain gut-laugh hilarious.

Agree. Although I'm not sure how long it can really last... I mean, they say death row inmates can stay there for 20 years, or forever, but I just don't know how the TV show can last that long. Season 5: The fourth attempt at busting out? Season 6: Absolving the guys after escaping? Nah.

Also, someone has to say the Simpsons.

Agreed on Aaron Sorkin. Too bad he hasn't got the work ethic to actually complete a series' story arc. It's like he gets an idea, writes maybe a season, and then gets bored or something. SportsNight also introduced me to my favorite overlooked actress and hottie, Sabrina Lloyd. Gorgeous and a brilliant actress. She's one of those women i don't want to see interviewed because I'm deathly afraid she'll be an airhead in real life. I'll just keep her sweet, mind-bendingly witty, intelligent and insanely hot. I guess I just fall for the dark hair, dark eyes and ability to string sentences and thoughts together. *sigh*

Spongebob rules! I enjoy the old episodes of the simpsons too. Just saw the latest southpark, they were dissing family guy (although they had a fair point) and threatening to show the image of muhammad. Everyone forgets he was in the David blaine/super best friends episode 3 years ago and no one gave a shit. Southpark is still first rate though.

CNN is fucking awesome at any time.
Whether stating the blatant obvious, using the most annoying voice possible, or babbling randomly, those metrosexuals always know what is news worthy. For instance, that box some loser tossed on the White House lawn: CNN was courageous enough to devote 16 hours coverage to the box when other news networks realized that the whole issue was rather stupid and quit at around 12 hours.

The West Wing: I'll clarify that although I haven't seen any recent episodes of this show, I really loved it when Aaron Sorkin was still writing for it. Great dialogue.I've watched TWW avidly on DVD; I'm currently on the fourth series. I have to say that so far my favourite series was the third, where Sorkin departed somewhat from the dialogue-centric style for more plot-orientated drama. Just about every review I've read thought that series was the weakest, for precisely that reason, but I loved it. Pretty dark stuff - especially the last episode - which is also something that appeals to me. Having said that, you're quite right - the dialogue is great.

24: I still think the first season is the best one. Lots of action and suspense.I have to agree with that. I kind of thought the second series had a marginally better storyline, but the originality of the first series still makes it a winner. By series two, it was a little easier to predict things, something that was not true in series one. Plus, the villians were fantastic. I thought Gaines and the Drazens were brilliant, but I've rarely been as shocked by anything on TV as I was when the truth about Myers was revealed! Excellent stuff.

Green Wing (ER & St Elsewhere on acid in The Office)

No Angels (Another medical one with 3 horny nurses and one daft romantic one) bloody hillarious.

Shameless ( sort of My name is Earl with out the Karma on a Manchester council estate) Really funny.

US TV I like. Dead Like Me, Tru Calling, House, My name is Earl, Loved Firefly (Fox are crazy and lazy)

There is a series on Sky in the UK called Hex sort of Buffy in an English boarding school with witchcraft and a Lesbian Ghost. It is actually very good and has fullfilled my need for sarcastic vampire/werewolf/creatures of the night type stuff.

So yes I watch a lot of things (usually on DVD) but I read a lot too so my imagination does get some exercise as well. I work from home!:p

Well, Lost and Futurama have already been mentioned, so I add:

Invasion - I like it. I think it's fun and sorta crazy with a bit of 'what the heck is going on'. And possibly aliens! Its on... at somepoint. I watch it Sundays at some hour between the times of 5:00 and 8:00, but it's on other nights I think at some time.

Supernatural - Again, fun. Lot's of... y'know. Supernatural action. Yar. Friday nights on Space (11:00 for me, Atlantic/Maritimes).

And How It's Made on the Discovery Channel. I don't know when it's on. Possibly every night. Finding out how stuff is made is fun! (Bagpipes... suprisingly complicated. )

is it me or is there no good reason to watch television these days? either way what rare gems of television do you NS'ers find good post: show name + your review + day and time shown

I would post mine but I have to actually find something to watch first:p

A prime example of the second law of television viewership (the first being: No matter how educational, informative, or enlightening a show you watch, TV will inevitably corrupt your soul and turn into a simpering and probably overweight dolt), which is that no matter how many great shows are on the air, there will be someone, somewhere out there to bitch and moan about their lack of quality.

Truth be told, I don't watch a lot of TV. To be honest, the only shows I watch with any regularity are The Simpsons, South Park, Family Guy, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and Smallville. That being said, though, we're in the middle, or perhaps nearing the end, of what is probably the Golden Age of adult cartoons. Family Guy, South Park, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Futurama are all on or have been on until recently. We are also in the midst of a welter of innovative new shows like The Shield, The Sopranos, 24, Lost, Arrested Development, The Office, The Colbert Report, The Daily Show, etc. Simply put, there is no real reason to claim that TV is a bunch of crap.

Dude. Agreed! Listening to the soundtrack right now, actually (R.I.P, baby, R.I.P) *tear*

Firefly was such a good show. I would recommend renting/buying/downloading the episodes.

Another show I used to love watching was Arrested Development. That was cancelled as well. What the hell is wrong with the world? Cancelling awesome shows.

Lost is really good. Although I have a feeling that they are going to stretch it out beyond belief because of the good ratings. And that will most likely piss me off after the 4th season or so.

And if you're Canadian - CBC's "The Hour" is pretty good. Kind of touches on some political issues.

These days I’ve been watching Stargate SG1 again, after they got the new lead (who I thought was great in Farscape). I really like the new Battlestar Galactica. It’s got some powerful, gritty writing compared to most fluffy sci fi out there. I also watch Smallville, because I’ve always been a fan of the Superman epic and I like most of what they’ve done with the show.

I watch “24”, but sometimes it can be a bit much. I really enjoy the Daily Show, Cobert Report (mostly for “the Word” segment), and the Rick Mercer Report (Canada) for a good parody of the News. I watch a bit of club comedy on the Comedy network as well as Corner Gas (Canadian) and South Park (even though most people I know can’t stand it and like Cartman I draw the line at talking poo).

I also watch News, especially documentaries like those on the Passionate Eye, Frontline, and 60 Minutes. I don’t tend to watch six o’clock news shows much though, when I can get better updates on the Internet.

I like a lot of the better HBO shows when they become available. I’m currently watching “Dead like Me” on Monday nights. I stopped watching Six Feet Under when it turned into a complete soap opera last season and they really lost their way.

I watch a few of the outdoorsman shows on Outdoor Life, like Bushcraft or Survivorman. Being a Canadian I of course watch hockey too.

I have to tape most of what I watch though, because I rarely have time to just sit down and watch it. I often have two weeks of stuff labeled on tape waiting for the right time to sit down and watch it.

Another show I used to love watching was Arrested Development.

Oh man, totally agree. I have Arrested Development on DVD and it's totally awesome. I watched every single episode when it was in first-run, and it's so much better than the other piece of trash about Orange County, The OC. I get all super protective because my family is from Newport Beach, so whenever shows talk about taking place there, I'm a little wary.

AD, however, was a perfect showing of life in Newport Beach XD. From the banana stand on Balboa Island to model houses in the middle of nowhere to extensive cases of fraud, Arrested Development is a work of comedic genius.

Lost needs to be mentioned more.

I watched the first season of Lost, but they lost me somewhere in the second season. It just wasn’t as good and started getting sillier by the episode.

Other than late night discovery/history channel - I only settle in for serious viewing on Sundays.

Law & Order Criminal Intent

Sopranos

Big Love

The HBO Rome series was excellent

As for 24 and Lost, I wait till the season is over, buy the DVD set - and then
watch an entire season in one glorious couch-potato weekend.

I also catch Southpark, Stewart and Colbert whenever I get the chance.

Oh... and Alton Brown. I love that guy.

I still haven't gotten through the second season. Horrible, I know. But I need to steal them off a friend. Or wait till May to buy them. Probably the latter.

Oh, and Oz, before it was canceled. Now that's what I call a television show.

"Lost," as has been mentioned many times over, is brilliant and very, very addictive. "House" is excellent. "Boston Legal" is very funny and clever, although I don't recommend it if you're not either (a) a liberal or (b) a conservative who doesn't take him/herself too seriously. "Desperate Housewives" is actually rather enjoyable if you're in the mood for campy dramedy.

As for pure comedies, there aren't too very many of them I find worthwhile anymore. "Arrested Development" was the funniest show I've seen in years and years, which is probably why it got cancelled and replaced with another generic piece of crap. *sigh*

I'm ashamed of myself for not mentioning these before. I don't see PMQs as often as I'd like, but I rarely miss QT. Also Newsnight. When it comes to a more light-hearted look at current affairs, Have I Got News for You and Mock the Week are excellent.

Oh someone who watches the same TV as me!

I watch less TV than I used to, and nothing on a regular basis. I NEVER watch Corry, Eastenders or other drivvel. Although I do have a dirty little secret, I sometimes watch the Jeremy Kyle show, when eating my breakfast, just to make me feel superior and upperclass...

I also love Top Gear, Jeremy is my god and I want his babies....(well not really)

I also now get to see HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA!!(I think it is supposed to be bigger) But I get to see it starting at midnight...But it keeps my Canuck from pinning away for lack of hockey on English TV.

I also like to watch the odd history thing, and a good bit of BBC drama now and again. But there is nothing I wouldn't miss or bother to set the video to record.....

I also love Top Gear, Jeremy is my god and I want his babies....(well not really)Do you have UKTV People? I'm not sure if they're still doing it, but for months, Jezza was on pretty much all day on Sundays, and at frequent intervals at other times. We nicknamed it Clarkson TV. It was fantastic. I'm using the past tense, but it might still be ongoing - my last few Sundays have involved more outside activity that I'd like.

I'm reading his collection of paper columns at the minute - The World According to Clarkson. Not that much about cars, but his inimitable style is laugh-out-loud funny.

Their are some good shows on Jimmy Carr TV (Channel 4) such as 8 out of 10 cats which is quite amusing.

They show the simpsons on their now as well - its a pity that their mostly old episodes. And numerous others I either can't remember or aren't actually that good anyway.

It'll be good on Sunday though if your in Britain on Channel 5 they're showing a whole night of 80's movies (Don't think im disturbed or anything for watching channel 5) - didn't it all used to be just porn or something?

The Boondocks

Sunday night at 11 on Cartoon Network

One of the funniest, and moving, cartoons I've seen since the earlier days of the simpsons. Behind the race analysis, political satire, and celebrity bashing there's something real and touching. Every episode has a deep meaning to it. The most moving one was the theoretical "MLK was actually in a coma and wakes up in 1999". It has the humor of Family Guy without the random interchangable jokes. The social commentary of the new South Parks, without the self absorbed imagery. The moving spirit of the old Simpsons, without the 50 or so 'lookback' episodes.
