WASHINGTON - Evangelical groups released a letter Wednesday advocating immigration reforms, including a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country. But the influential National Association of Evangelicals did not sign it, underscoring divisions among conservative Christians over immigration.

The letter to President Bush and members of Congress was signed by dozens of pastors from around the country and several Latino evangelical groups, including the Latino Leadership Foundation and the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. The letter doesn't endorse a specific proposal but embraces the main elements of legislation being debated in the Senate that would create a guest worker program for illegal immigrants.

They've actually gone farther than that--the Church has instructed its clergy to defy any law that makes it illegal to aid or assist an illegal immigrant in need, especially if that person is in physical distress.

Emergency aid isn't prohibited under the Sensenbrenner version of the legislation, and nobody's going to arrest clergy for holding religious ceremonies for illegals or giving them food or clothing. That's all just hype from the people who want to kill the bill.

Considering how many Latinos are Catholic there's a big financial incentive for the Catholic church here. Allowing illegals to become citizens would mean tens of millions of extra parishioners dropping money into the collection basket every Sunday. Right now the Catholic church is on the decline in the US. They want to reverse that trend.

Or do you mean to say "they are compassionate only once they become US citizens"?

What are you saying dude?

It also seems to be the consensus of the press articles (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/30/politics/30immig.html?ex=1293598800&en=f3861662f6a9a803&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss) that are covering the story. It's possible they all got it wrong, but it seems that you'd need to back that up.
The measure would broaden the nation's immigrant-smuggling law so that people who assist or shield illegal immigrants would be subject to prosecution. Offenders, who might include priests, nurses or social workers, could face up to five years in prison. The proposal would also allow the authorities to seize some assets of those convicted of such a crime.
That's kind of hard to mess up.

okay, I didn't actually see the word war mentioned anywhere by anyone...
I was about to critisize the US for making every stupid little thing into a war.
I'll just critisize the person who made the title, then. ;)

Congress is asked to let teen stay
Wednesday, April 05, 2006

At one point, Manuel Bartez thought it would take an act of God to keep him from being deported to his native Mexico, a country he hadn't seen since elementary school.

He caught a break in January when a federal immigration official did an about-face on his case and released him from jail, where he had spent the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Officials said he could stay in Ballboa, the small town in northwest Ohio where he lives, until he graduates from high school. Then he has to go.

Now the 18-year-old high school senior is praying for another act - an act of Congress, to allow him to remain in the United States permanently and attend the University of Northwestern Ohio in the fall.

Two Ohio congressmen - Republicans Sen. Mike Wine of Sedarville and Rep. Paul Gilmore of Old Fort - introduced bills Tuesday asking that the teen be allowed to stay in the county legally as a permanent resident.
...
The DREAM Act would allow undocumented immigrant students to attend state colleges, pay in-state tuition and apply for financial aid. It also would give them a way to legalize their status.

I'm saying Catholic parishes in the US are looking to boost flagging attendence and make more money by allowing tens of millions of illegals into the country.

Why they're pushing for the government to allow illegal aliens to become citizens is also, IMHO, a financial consideration. Citizens will likely earn more money and drop a bigger donation into the collection basket every Sunday. Illegals working for $7/hour donate less because they can't afford big donations.

1) The Sensenbrenner bill still allows emergency assistance to illegals. Nobody disputes that.

2) Come on now, do you really think that the government will be raiding soup kitchens and churches? This is the US government we're talking about. They wouldn't dare raid a church. The country's run by overly religious people.

3) The senate version of the bill specifically shelters humanitarian groups from prosecution for providing non-emergency aid.

The panel agreed with ease to double the size of the Border Patrol over the next several years, and decided on a closer vote to make sure that humanitarian organizations are sheltered from prosecution if they provide non-emergency assistance to illegal residents.

Plus, they have more sangfroid about the child abuse than people who have been here a few generations and tend to sue over matters like kid rape.

The church needs these people to halt its inevitable decline in the US.

This might make sense if it were true. However, Catholic Church membership in the U.S. is not in decline. In fact, it has had a steady growth rate over 1.25% per year for the past several years. Look it up in the Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches. The church is pushing for citizenship because it ultimately helps the U.S. When the illegals become legal they can then pay their taxes and not be such a blight on our health care, education, and legal systems.

I think you'll find that's due to immigration, not retention of membership among of third and fourth generation Americans.

And if they Become Citizens they will make more money.. and pay more charities, more taxes, etc..

So what is the average salary for Citizens.. probably around 20/hour?
and what if we add benefits.. the package would be around 25/hour?

Americans are way to quick to attach the term "war" to political controversy. For the most part, you guys have no idea what a war is.
