Very nice, but I wish somebody would actually note on the whole "SUVs should only be bought by people who will use them for their intended purpose" as opposed to just "SUVs are ebil!"

But then, that's coming from a pragmatic environmentalist SUV owner who pretty much couldn't reach half of the places I go in a regular vehicle.....

I dunno, my two Jeeps (one heavyweight Grand Cherokee Laredo for packing lots of shit along, one a lightweight Wrangler for intense off-roading) are just about the only things that have EVER gotten me a lot of places, especially in the Ozarks down "roads" that are supposed to be off-limits to vehicles. I'm willing to bet that at least the Wrangler could make it.

But then, perhaps I should specify -- these aren't shiney, flashy SUVs. They're a trusted, well-known name (Jeep, as I said) that are both old but functional (Wrangler is '86, Cherokee is '96), and both have at least a third of a million miles on them. They work for what we need.

Ahhh I would not concider them true SUV's

I own a wrangler myself (98 on a 6 inch suspension 2 body... coilover and running 40 superswamper tsl's) Thats my offroad baby

But On the farm I have to get to the back woods and manage to come out with 2000 + pounds worth of wood or back with feed and such things

Then what, my dear Thrust, makes something a "true" SUV? I've never heard somebody claim that either of my vehicles weren't SUVs.

There are much greater hazards to the environment than SUVs. Much greater.

Those commercials made it seem like SUVs are causing it.

The whole "complain about SUVs" thing is petty bullshit. It's a way for people who are concerned about oil use, war, pollution and driving addictions to blame other people and their cars, so that they in comparison feel better about their own.

15 mpg = SATAN SUV OIL GUZZLING ASSHOLE-DRIVEN
15.1 mpg = conscience-based wholesome enviro-friendly goodness!

Myopic at best.

Try 15 MPG = an incredible waste of resources.

70 MPG = a much better use of said resources.

Reminds me of the conclusion of the South Park episode:

We should all drive the hybrid cars because they're better, but we can't think we're better than anyone who doesn't and certainly shouldn't insult them (this asshole's SUV from the commercial), or else WE become the assholes.

Hybrid cars will not stop global warming or enviornmental problems associated with cars, but they can help reduce them and delay the inevitable loss of oil until we can mass produce an alternative.

Honda makes one. It's pretty cheap too. It's called the Insight (http://automobiles.honda.com/models/model_overview.asp?ModelName=Insight)

66 MPG city.

More than 70 Highway.

Okay, and what about for people like me who will be skinned alive for buying a foreign car? Are we all over-using assholes because we have the opportunity to take advantage of huge family discounts on normal cars?

Or are we assholes for owning "gas-guzzlers" in the first place?

Best off-roader ever is the Toyota Hilux. Nothing can kill those things, as anyone who watches 'Top Gear' can attest.
