Is he doing this to avoid prosecution? I am a little behind on this subject.

He's probably doing it so he can use all his campaign funds for legal defense.

As has already been stated (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10695486&postcount=2), my dear Gymoor, he didn't resign. I fired his ass. *shakes fist* No more jive talk up in here, DeLay, no more for you.

I think he has to resign so the party can replace him on the ticket in Texas. He won his primary, so if he didn't resign, Lampson would basically waltz in unopposed--not that I would have minded.

Anyone is better then DeLay. He was a dirty politican...even for a politican.

Another member of his staff just turned over states evidence, though it is unknown how much, if any, directly involves DeLay.

Tommy boy doesn't seem like he'd run from something unless it was some serious shiat.

Despite his insistance to the contrary, I think a good deal of why DeLay resigned is that he both knows he can't win reelection and wants to go out on his own terms, and he knows that the inevitable scandal he is facing when his obvious involvement in various illegal and shady dealings comes out will be easier to cope with if he has removed himself somewhat from the public eye.

I also am guessing that the Republican party is looking at a miserable defeat in a number of upcoming elections and is trying to clean house in a big, bad way. To hear Republicans expressing concerns that the "right wing religious nuts" have taken over the party is a strong indication that they are running somewhat scared from what has traditionally been their most solid voter base.

It is just time for the pendulum to swing back to the left. And since the current swing to the right went SO far, the backswing is gaining momentum and threatening all the Republicans, so they are distancing themselves from whatever scandals they can in somewhat unsubtle salvage attempts.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for Democrats.

We wanted to watch the albatross slowly twist in the wind around the GOPs neck.

The albatross was good luck until they killed it. Hold on to that happy thought.

Personally, I imagine this will all be forgotten by November however.

The positive spin is that Democrats can point to DeLay as just another example of corruption that needs to weeded out. Cunningham's gone, DeLay's on his way, and there's still a lot of people touched by the Abramoff scandal. Bob Ney is probably next on the list.

Guess you Kiwi types are too busy (censored censored censored) sheep to follow US politics. Or something like that anyways. ;) (Feel free to reply with a joke about Americans, but not one about Yanks. Being a goold ole boy from the South, calling me a Yank is like calling you an Aussie.)

Yep. He's a right fucking SOB. I'm from his district and actually met the jackass up close and personal many years ago. He's the worst sort of politician.

And I'm loving that he's blaiming it on the Dems.:

"The only reason I was indicted [was] the stupid rule that allows the Democrats to pick the Republican leadership," Mr. DeLay said.
He was referring to a party rule requiring that any Republican indicted for a crime give up his leadership post. Mr. DeLay has contended that is why the Democrats, who have no such rule, persuaded Ronnie Earle to seek a grand jury indictment of Mr. DeLay and keep seeking it until he got one.

That article's claim that one way 1994 was different from today is misleading. They mention that the Contract with America was pushed in September of 1994, but then act as though the Democrats' failure to put one out in March or April is a bad thing. The only people really paying attention to election year stuff right now are the junkies (like me). No way do you put specifics out this early. You put them out when people are paying attention--closer to election day.

Oh i agree with you. I think my stance has been fairly steady on republicans and their mannerisms - i just took that link, read it, and figured it'd be fun for argument - especially given Corneliu's post. :D
