I'd rather they funded our disabled pensions and provided sufficient medical care for our disbled instead. Leave the memorials for the dead.

These days, everyone is entitled to a memorial. I don't see any good reason why a private organization can't raise it's own money and build a memorial. I'm waiting for the unwed Filipina mothers to start raising money for their memorial before I decide to donate.
Seriously, the nation's dead and wounded do deserve recognition. I wouldn't even mind seeing a few dollars of my tax money kicked in to help the cause. Just as long as the government stays out of the monument design, because we know what a mess they can make of that.
