Looking at buying this guitar, wondering if anyone's played/owned one and knows if it's really as good as the reviews say.

Looks good, but if you have just a bit more money, I'd go for a Jasmine Takamine.

Erm, a Jasmine Takamine would cost less than half the price of the guitar I'm looking at...and for good reason. It's a greatly inferior guitar.

EDIT: Or were you talking about the EG line?

...I think. I know that my dad had one that cost about $425, and it was a Takamine Classical Acoustic. It's the one of the best-sounding acoustic guitars I've ever heard.

It's a shame we don't have it anymore.

Takamine is great if you want an accoustic/electric, but for pure accoustic (like the Alvarez) they're only decent.

Gotcha. It was probably the expensive strings more than anything.

Watch for warpage in the bridge and the first thing you should do is replace the plastic/resin saddle with ebony.

If I were you, get it and use it solely as a practice instrument and, in the meantime, save up for a Gibson SJ200.

If you know what to look for, when holding a guitar I'd advise going to a pawn shop. At the end of January I bought a Martin D-15 for $300. There are two scratches on it but everything that matters is like new and I saved about $1000. At least look in local pawn shops before you buy a new guitar.
