So, the other day I was hanging out with some guy friends, and mentioned that I play NS. They all reacted along the lines of, "OMG you play NS? But you're a girl!!" I thought this was rather odd, but when I asked them about their reactions, all they could come up with was that girls don't play video games, and they especially don't play political ones. They also thought I'd be uncomfortable participating in this kind of forum, simply because I'm female. I know that a lot of girls don't play video games of any sort, but surely it's not so uncommon these days that it would merit that kind of reaction?

For the women on here that have been around longer than I have - what do you think? Do you generate these kinds of reactions too, especially with regards to NS?

EDIT: I'd like male reactions too. Guys - do you think it's weird/unusual for women to play video games?

Actually, NS is the only online gaming thing I'm at all associated with anymore, the rest of them are far too guyish for me. This is just about the only place that I feel I'm not a HUGE minority, not a rare statistic.....that, and I'm very politically geared IRL so it's just a nice little distraction for me.

Ok, that's a very weird reaction... and not one I've ever seen myself.
I don't really like most video games myself, so they might be right in that respect, although my housemate (yes, another girl) simply loves them. And she plays NS herself.
But then again, we both work in IT, so we might be the exception to the rule.... along with the other 40% females in this company here...

I thought that estrogen was like the acid blood in Aliens, in that you only had to worry about it if you broke a woman's skin. Provided that you keep them away with a flamethrower or cattle prod, you don't have to worry about getting estrogen sprayed all over your computer and dissolving it.

Huh. I have still yet to play that game. I fail to see what's so interesting about it. The first video game I ever played, if you don't count Space Invaders or PacMan, was Mech Warrior 2 (granted it was only for about half an hour, but still!).

I like City of Heroes. I also play other games... just not usually first person shooter type games. I like RPG type games. I like strategy type games. I like sims type games. I like lots and lots of things... just not blood-and-guts head-shot type games.

And I think guys who think girls don't play games are just ignorant, sexist idjits. Specially a "game" like NS isn't like you're trying to blow someone's head off with a machine gun or something. You could even make unicorns your national animal or something. Serious estrogenability there.

I was banned from playing CSS or Halo with the same group of friends after I soundly kicked all of their asses in both games. ;) Which only made it more confusing for me when they said they thought it was weird that I'm a NSer, since they already knew that I play other "non-girly" video games.

Meh, I'm a full on girly-geek. I can be really girly, so people that don't know me sometimes are somewhat suprised to find out that I like console video games more than my boyfriend does, HG2G is my bible (fuck that lame movie) I play D&D, read Penny-Arcade religiously, and loooove Firefly and Family Guy.

the reaction in the OP isn't surprising to me, but then i'm a guy and i have only ever met one girl who's really into her videogames to the extent many guys i know are (and i was just like 'ooh you play? cool!' to her - surprised but whatever, just go with it). i've known more girls who have played the occasional game, and a few girls who qualify as nerdier than me :D so personally i don't think that's a reaction i'd give, but still... hardly surprising.

What a load of stereoptyped bollocks. Much of my time is devoted to video games and NS and I also play RPGs (well, Call of Cthulhu anyway). I am driven mad by 'typical' women (those that spend their lives obsessing over babies, clothes, soaps etc) and thus all my best friends are male, but luckily there's a growing number of nerdy females like myself, and to assume otherwise is a load of horseshit.

OK, my friends ALL think I am weird anyway, the fact that I do as much as I do online singles me out from the rest of my really good female friends, who shop and email basically. But the thing that they think is the weirdest of all is the fact that I 'talk' to people, either in NS, on MSN or whatever, they had all their darkest fears answered when I totally lost my mind, divorced my husband and ran of with a man I met on the internet!

My children all think this is just about the saddest excuse for a game they ever saw, they all refuse even to call it a game at all and refer to it as 'your sad country thing' My girls are both non game players anyway, but my boy does play games and has no problem with me playing games, it's just that he says that NS isn't a game at all......

Why oh why do people think that - or say that? Are these the kind of reactionary people who get uncomfortable when they think of a female lawyer, doctor, cop or construction worker as well? I don't understand people who react that way, and frankly, I think such persons are quite annoying.

They also thought I'd be uncomfortable participating in this kind of forum, simply because I'm female. I know that a lot of girls don't play video games of any sort, but surely it's not so uncommon these days that it would merit that kind of reaction?

its called sarcasm - you're taking what i say too literally. by deliberatley profoundly understating it i am making a) joking reference to those who might actually think what you think i do, and b) stating that there are, in fact, most likely an awful, awful lot of female NationStates players - as you say, tens of thousands.

OK, She got this on holiday in America, and I just asked her and she didn't know that there was a different meaning, she got the tshirt because her boyfriend at the time was considered by many to be geeky and nerdy and because as a very good looking and popular girl, people gave her stick about going out with him...so when she saw the tshirt she bought it.

As a Mum, I am concerned about my kids, and this tshirt seemed harmless to me, but of course now I know that maybe its not...I am still in the dark about what the problem with the word dork is...so its more my being ignorant of a new usage of a slang word than being unconcerned.

Dork

Someone who has odd interests, and is often silly at times. A dork is also someone who can be themselves and not care what anyone thinks.

someone who does things that are kinda silly and not neccessarily cool but always cute

He's such a dork. I love dorks.

Or the Whale penis?

LOL I think that I dont need to worry that people will think that she loves whale penis....its the context surely? the use of the words nerd, geek and dork together would mean that it is not about loving nerds geeks and whale penises....or is that just me?

Um, no, I haven't gotten that reaction.

Of course that may be because 1) I haven't really told many people because they're usually not that intensely interested in what exactly I'm doing on the internet and 2) I wouldn't call this a "video game". I guess I would just say it's a for-fun political simulation "game" plus a forum that eats up my time. :p

Do you generate these kinds of reactions too, especially with regards to NS?

i've been playing computer games since the text based interactive fiction stuff in the early 80s (zork, planetfall, hitchhiker) back then, it was a little weird to be female and into that stuff, but i didn't care. i care less for the shoot 'em up stuff than i do for a good puzzle, and i suppose that's sterotypical girly-ness, but i've worked in variety of technical fields where i'm generally one of a few females but not in the majority, so an online forum like this isn't intimidating. i think most people here assume you're male at the outset, but i probably do that too. irl, i've never been treated strange by other tech guys because i'm female, and honestly, i've been on ns since jan03 and i've not had that experience here, either. (but i don't post in general much, and don't rp with this nation much, either)

but i'm also in my late 30s, and guys are more mature about these things than they were when i was 13. back then, when i was the only girl who wanted to join the d&d club after school, they were all a bit creeped out by it, and pretty much shunned me. of course, these were the same guys who suddenly became more interested in me a couple of years later...

Actually I say that to all the girls. It good for impressing them. Especially if they do turn out to be hot. :D

But seriously, I think hotness is more than just what is outside. Most of it is what is inside. A girl can be average looking but still be hot.

There was this other girl, who was a coworker of Krista that I started talking to. She was bigger than Krista who was skinny. She was not that big mind you, I'd say about average. After talking to her a lot, and more often than I did with Krista, I found that Faith was much hotter than Krista.

If a girl is pretty but she has a shallow personality, she is most definately not hot.

maybe not at 12 or 13, but by the time i was 14, these guys were my friends and by 15 were the guys I dated. i think once they realized that i was in the same classes they were in and doing just as well as they were, they were able to acknowledge that i wasn’t a total waste of time. you’re right, i was a little intimidated by then when i was younger, but seriously, they really were a bunch of softies, and in retrospect if i had stuck it out i could have held my own. it was a good age to learn that lesson. a lot of girls at that age cave to the myth that they aren't as good as boys in more technical pursuits. it's nice to see that changing a bit. still a ways to go, perhaps, but it's improving.

 Soaps?! Where?!? *runs away*

I agree completely! Really girly girls don't get on my nerves as much as they used to (one of my best friends is as girly as they come), but I think it's still fair to say that I have more male friends than female friends. Usually they're all surprised when they find out I play video games, but most of them then think it's cool. This reaction from the OP is the most extreme I've come across.

EDIT: I'd like male reactions too. Guys - do you think it's weird/unusual for women to play video games?

I think pretty much every single person I've met on NS initially believed I was male. Even after I explained that I am female, many people have refused to believe it. I've been told that I "sound male" or "act like a guy," and therefore cannot possibly be female. Meh. Whatever they want to believe.

As for other videogames, I began my history of whupping ass back with Street Fighter 2, and I haven't let up since. I'm not the best of the best, but I certainly perform as well or better than most of the guys I know. I haven't made up my mind as to whether that's something to be proud of or not...:)

I've started playing online games in the last few years, and I'm amazed by how game designers still persist in offering pitifully few options for players who want to design a female character that has anything approaching normal proportions. Items or costumes for female characters are almost universally designed to make the character look like a stripper.

Yes, I am well aware that the games are targetted to a particular audience, but that excuse is wearing increasingly thin. For one thing, women are the fastest growing audience for online roleplaying games, and any game designer who doesn't get on board with that is going to get hit where it hurts...his pocketbook. For another thing, guys who are playing MMORPGs are usually less likely to have solid social skills as it is, and this kind of game design only helps to further ensure that they will NEVER be able to successfully interact with members of the opposite sex.

One exception that I have found is, bizarrely, World of Warcraft. Now, I'm somebody who freaking HATES fantasy games. My lover (who also plays videogames a ton) describes me as "racist toward elves." I hate bow-and-arrow combat, I find dragons annoying, and magical powers are so boring it hurts me. But World of Warcraft offers an unusually nice array of female character creation options, as well as offering costume options that allow me to make a really badass looking female character. The double advantage of this is that many male players make female characters for reasons OTHER than wanting to stare at a pixelated stripper toon.

If only they didn't have so many goddam elves.

It's funny to me that guys would think it's weird for women to be on NS. Maybe it's a common assumption that women just don't like to sit on our arses for ours on end, whether playing NS, watching TV or for any other reason. There's a lot of truth to that, but overall--false assumption. I usually play at work (usually as of yesterday, I just got into this thing), where I am forced to sit on my arse for hours on end.
This is just like Risk, only online, more interesting and with more people. Smart women LOVE Risk, that's why those guy friends who triggered this whole conversation probably don't have girlfriends/wives, b/c they think they can't relate to women. Oh, but they can! They should talk about politics/strategy games and see what happens! haha! (But first, they should get over their preconceived notions of what women like and don't like!)

I don't know. I don't really get much of a reaction about NS since nobody I talk to really knows that I play it.

I do get weird looks/reactions from people when they find out that I play D&D, and also the boys at church are jealous of my husband because he married a "chick who will play Playstation", I never understood it though.

I don't really know that it's abnormal for girls to play games, but I guess so since I was talking about KoL with some of the kids at church and the whole time they looked at me like they didn't believe that I really play it.

I used to write IF games (minus the programming, just design the structure and write the text) In some remote landfull there are 3 or 4 three ring binders with the entire contents of my spare time of my geeky teen girl years. What I'd give to have those now.

Nah. It's true that for a while there was a stigma about video games, but lately that's been lowered by people who decide to actually have some fun with it. Sure, you still get nutjobs--my sister, for instance, thinks that violent movies are perfectly okay but violent video games are the devil(metaphorically speaking of course, as she's pagan) simply because you're controlling the actions rather than just watching. ~_~

So, yeah. Hell, my girlfriend loves video games. We were playing HALO the other day, for science's sake.

I know I'm coming in a bit late, and someone's probably already said this, but there's actually a fairly well-documented increase in the amount of female gamers in general: not only with games like ours but with more "conventional" ones as well. Just the other day I was playing Guild Wars with a 15 year old girl--I probably wouldn't have taken this claim at face value were it not for the fact that we were all on TeamSpeak, and she was cursing like a sailor. Great stuff.

I dont really see alot of girls play video games down here, but Im not suprised if they do. My girlfriend and I play Supersmash Bros. and she is a Legend of Zelda-coholic and loves Metel Gear series (I think Im in love!!). We love playing SOul Cal III and Tekken and Co-op Splinter Cell...I need to marry this girl now! lol. But video games are for everyone.

P.S. Play Shadows of the Colossus. Very underated game.

Haha, that's great! It's funny when you get them on Natural Selection doing that sort of thing (or Counter-Strike, even). It really widens your perspective (that is, if you're pretty closed-minded to begin with).

Now there's something to think about. Girls play 'bad' video games, so when they play 'good' ones, it's surprising? What are these "rubbish" video games that we play, hmm? You know what? I was thinking about this (being myself a girl who limits herself to NS and Sims type games for the most part) and I think it's all guys' fault.

Seriously, when I was a litte kid I adored[I] my gameboy and I wanted a bigger game console to play on but they were waaay out of my parent's budget, I was brotherless being an only child at the time, and all the guys I tried to hang out with were too busy thinking I had cooties. Then so many years later I buy a PS2 and all the guys I try to hang out with are too busy trying to stick their tongue down my throat to possibly think about video games. And [I]then they have the audacity to complain about how girls either never play video games, or only play dumb ones.

Well if you'd learned to share sooner maybe it'd be a different story!

When I find out that a girl likes/plays video games, I think it's cool. My hypothesis is that, because from several years of playing video games with my male friends, I came to view playing video games as part of my familiar and comfortable world, whereas the vast majority of females seemed part of another world - one which intrigued me greatly, but was an unknown (and seemingly unknowable) enigma. Because of this, a "default" view of my female peers began to take shape; this view was quite bland, vague, and slightly stereotypical, but I had nothing else to go on - and because girls were so foreign to me, it naturally followed in my mind (probably unconsciously) that they would not generally do such a decidedly un-foreign thing as play video games. When I found out a girl I knew did play video games, it made her less foreign and closer to my world, which I always like.

Of course, now I know better, but because of this earlier thinking (and because most female peers of mine pretty much remain enigmas to me), it still piques my interest, and often inspires my admiration, much more to find out that a girl I know likes/plays video games than a guy I know equally well.

(Admittedly, I was never totally oblivious to the fact that some girls play video games, because my sister has played them basically as long as I have. But my sister has always been about as far from a girly-girl as you can get and has otherwise seemed quite different from the average girl, and so seemed more like the exception, not the rule.)

Weird thing is, this particular group of guys already knew that I play other games (mostly RPGs, with some RTS thrown in for good measure, and very occasionally I'll hop on CSS using my boyfriend's account). no. never got these kind of reactions either. It was actually a guy friend who introduced the game to me. They all know I'm extremely politically opinionated, so nobody's really surprised.

thats how i found this site..but i do play other video games like empire earth and mario cart

In my male opinion, it's not that weird. If you want to play you can. But Most of the girls (and some guys) are too shallow to see that it's alright for anyone to play games like this.

Although I'm yet to see a girl play Magic: The Gathering...

girls do play magic:the gathering...(im a girl and ive been playing since i was seven)

I don't think it is strange or anything like that, but as far as I have observed, the majority of NS players are male....There there are of course females as well...
If you haven't guessed, I'm a guy...

they are legalizing inbreeding, and lowering the AOC a bit.

Just for fun, a little poem I constructed that reveals the crux of the problem. I know it's crap, but what the hell! ;)

Lolz Dudes, don’t be stupidd,
Tere ain’t no girls on the interwebs.
So don’t be a N00B and try and play cupid,
Cos that chick youre chatting up is a man!

All night long I play the gamez,
Sweaty palms and cheesy chips.
And don’t you say that you ain’t lamez,
Cos those words don’t come from chery lips!

Its your sista or some relation,
Who I speak to over the webz.
So don’t go lying bout youre nation,
Its not founded by a girl named Debz!

So get off of youre PC now,
You ain’t fooling nobody.
Don’t worry man, don’t have a cow,
Tere ain’t no girls on the interwebs!

It's not very common. I wish it was though. If girls were impressed by my useless feats of killing fake things instead of the useless feats of the football team I'd be in a much better place.

Yeah, when even my pinkie is wider than the keys on my keyboard I have to wonder things like this. The ring finger is where I get into the most trouble it's thick enough to clip the odd surrounding key, but without the independant dexterity of my other larger fingers.

I don't think there's one (okay, many) video gaming guys who don't fantasize about video gaming women, for two reasons. One, the whole "common interests" thing, and two, just the fact that given the male dominance of video gaming, the perception that "no girls play video games", hence the shock once we actually find one.

As far as RPing goes- I don't know if I've seen one girl who does (besides in the UN of course). Makes sense- on II everyone's preoccupied with war, so there's got to be a lot of testosterone there. Quite tedious actually- we need an estrogen infusion so we're not stuck with the same boring threads.

(I am a male if anyone asks)

I think it might be that the perception of many guys is that girls DON'T play video games etc...and that they won't be as good....and thus easier to beat....or maybe it fullfils the ideal situation that the video game playing guy..would be able to get a girlfriend because she plays games, and if there was no one else to play with, he could play her......or something...ramble ramble

Just a theory...

Hmmmnnnn...I like the idea- and, I'd like to add, there may be a *thrill* inside a guy for finding a girl "willing to learn" how to play video games. It plays along with the idea that, in this case, a relationship is simply "a (deep) friendship with sex" (my ideal kind of relationship), in that the girl is like the guy's friends only that she's a girl.

*ponders this* I suppose that's kind of like my relationship with my boyfriend. He thought it was really cool when he found out I play video games.

One thing I'll never understand though, are the guys that think it's "hot" for a girl to play video games, then get all out of sorts if the girl beats them, blaming it on luck. :p

I've never really had any bad resoponses to playing NS, simply because all the guy friends i know started playing at the same time as me. Now Counter Strike, thats a different story. I'm constantly hearing amazed resoponses from men when they find out i play CS. Normally when i first start talking on a mic in a server, i immediatly am asked if im a young boy playing, becuase i have a female voice. When i reply that i am female, everyone on the server reacts like you describes. It dosn't bother me much anymore, i like being know as a formidable female CS player. I would like to know how many girls on here play CS in any form.
