The 92-year-old former mayor of Grand Lake, Colo., was attacked on his way to church and critically injured by a bull moose.

Louis Heckert was walking through an alley on his about 9:25 a.m. Sunday when the moose charged. "Heckert did not provoke the moose, which weighed about 800 pounds," said Randy Hampton, a Division of Wildlife spokesman.

"When moose attack, they knock a person over and begin stomping on them," Hampton said.

"Grand Lake is a mountain town, so walking down the street is like being at the edge of a forest," Hampton said. Still, moose attacks are rare, the Denver Post reported.

Heckert was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, where he was in critical condition with head injuries, friends and hospital officials said.

The 5- or 6-year-old moose was killed by a Division of Wildlife officer because of its aggressive behavior. It had serious injuries from a previous incident with five broken ribs and a punctured chest cavity.

Heckert had celebrated his 92nd birthday Saturday night at the Lariat Saloon where he tap dances every weekend, said Gene Stover, the saloon's owner.

There's a few, normally they stay in the Rockies though.

Ouch. Hope he lives.

But why did it attack? Odd. Probably felt threatened.

That is fucked-up that they killed the moose. People do worse things all the time, and they hardly ever get killed for it~

Yep. From time to time in Minnesota you hear about one stomping a full grown bear to death.

It's best to keep your distance from them.

Injured animals are prone to attack.

Happens every year in Anchorage (AK). We used to keep score. In 1994 IIRC the final score was Moose 2, Game Wardens 4.

In a particularly tragic event, a Cow (living in the greenspace around the University of Alaska Anchorage) who was seriously pissed that the moronic tweenage students at UAA were throwing snowballs at her calf, took it out on some poor old (70y/o?) guy (also a student IIRC) who couldn't run away. Stomped the poor bastard to death. They had to shoot both the Cow and Calf because they were too large and wily to relocate.

Thank you, stupid-assed tweenagers.

Another incident in Anchorage had a moose stomp a car to "death".

Stupid Hippie/Yuppie wanted to get into her garage - which was blocked by a moose. Rather than just driving away and going shopping, she edged close to the moose and honked her horn.

By the time the moose was done dancing on her Volvo, there wasn't an undamaged square inch left - and she will be emotionally scarred for life.

Imagine being trapped in a car as (essentially) a 1200lb linebacker took after your car with a sledgehammer.

I would have loved to have been there with a video camera. :p

Moose's are some of the biggest assholes in the animal kingdom. I have almost been killed by a moose three times. Several times driving on I5 in my Honda Civic I have had a moose walk in front of me on Interstate 5 and just stops right on the highway and look at me like it is daring me to hit its 1300 pound ass. I end up having to swurve to miss the cock sucking animal nearly killing myself. I hate fucking moose's

Go forth my minions! Stomp cars and men alike! Leave none unstomped! Brand the world with your hoofy signature! Mwahaha! Soon we will be the moose-masters of this world, and once our elk and caribou brethren flock to our banner we shall truly be unstoppable! Today the world, tomorrow, who knows?!

Moose are assholes, but Bears are Rednecks. You can be fishing along side of one for hours or days (as long as you are upstream) with no trouble. But then it will decide that you deserve a whuppin and come over to deliver one. Go figure.
