Top Republican says the GOP has been hijacked by foaming at the mouth Fundies

The virulent influence of The Fundies has warped the Republican Party muted Democratic voices and become a ominous threat to America's future Democracy. No leading world power in modern memory has become a captive of the sort of biblical terrorism that dismisses modern knowledge and science. The last time was in the early 17th century when the papacy allied with inquisitional Spain tortured the astronomer Galileo for saying that the sun was the center of our solar system.

An interesting read. It feels a little like fear mongering, though. I'm not sure the problem is as serious as this writer makes it out to be. That does not mean that there is not a problem, however. Question is: what do we do about it? Sheesh, I wish people would quit being so idiotic about scientific TRUTHS and using religious bullshit instead. Ugh. As a sensible rightie, it pisses me off.

Ramen to that. The GOP would be much, much more palatable if people like Rick Santorum and Sam Brownback weren't in control, and others like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson weren't trusted right-hand advisors and non-politician wings of the party.
Seriously, the religious right stunted any favor I might have had for the Republicans. They taught me as a kid to automatically associate Republicans with irrationality, stupidity, religious fundamentalism, xenophobic discrimination, and anti-reason, meaning that I know have a knee-jerk reflex to assume that any conservative viewpoint is probably dumb and illogical. For a party that older people still think of as representing themselves as clear, logical thinkers, the fact that a young new voter like myself has an image of the GOP as the Party Of Unreason should be worrying - yet it obviously isn't.
Combined with their dirty, underhanded, and antidemocratic political tactics in government and elections, their disrespect for individual rights, and the foreign-policy ascendancy of the neocons, it's all driven me completely away from that party and pretty firmly into the Democratic Party - I just can't vote for a candidate who supports irrationality and Bible-thumps as a decision-making tool.
It's actually sad for me as well, since I remained a strong economic liberal for years because of being driven to the Democrats by the Religious Reich, and am only in the last year or two separating economic and social planks and starting to shift rightwards economically.

The Title of your thread is misleading. Kevin Phillips is not a top republican. He was a top republican, but left the party for the reasons he identifies in the article.

A good read, all and all. I don't think this guy qualifies as a prominent Righty any more, but many moderate Republicans do identify with this guy's ideas, and I think it would be good to see the fiscally responsible, socialy reasonable, branch of the Republican party return.

The Fundies actively purged them and have more influence with the Leadership then the voices of sanity and moderation
