Poll coming...
After seeing this post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10690589&postcount=46) in the thread about lurkers, I got to thinking about how popularity/name recognition/respect works on the forum.
A lot of things seem to go into it, including personality, uniqueness of nation name, age of nation, posting frequency, quality of posts, and (perhaps more controversially) political ideology.
The questions I have for y'all are these:
What's the most important factor in your decision to like or respect another poster?
How important is nation age and political ideology on the forum in terms of people getting respect?
----------
Now for my boring story. I used to post on General...a lot...back in late '03 and early '04. I posted often enough that I had some degree of name recognition and respect, though I wouldn't go so far as to call it popularity or suggest that I was royalty or one of the most respected debaters. I posted in the debate threads and the socialization threads by turns, hobnobbing with the serious, the ridiculous, the humorous, and the licentious. ;)
These days, there aren't as much of the socialization threads left, and we have mostly debate in comparison with the past. So while socialization is still an important component of the forum, I think there may have been somewhat of a shift in what makes for a respected or popular poster as a result of the change.
Any thoughts?

Age USED to be a factor for me ... and post count. But as I worked my way up there I realized that really there were people with 1 k posts that were just as knoledgable as someone with 10
I guess the same factors work with the forum and me as in real life.
Thinks like quality of argumenets, atitudes, beliefs, And just good ol just likin someone

Neither age nor post count.
If you want to become popular with me, show yourself to be original and with a good sense of humour.
And it does help if you post a little more than once a year, though, as I might forget about you otherwise. Unless you really, REALLY impressed me ;)

As a sort of old-timer, centrist, capable of eloquent speech and possessing an impressive postcount, I was once 'popular' and well-liked. Then I "sold out". Then I went away. :( Now I am no longer sure if I am recognised by the majority on a day-to-day basis, or what if anything people think of me. I am no longer sure I care either. Pretty sad really.

Yeah. I learned pretty quick that a low postcount poster could just mean that they rarely found something worth using their impressive intellect to debate. I got squashed pretty bad on a few occasions before I learned that.

I'm kind of temperamental, the mildest things can convince me that I don't like a poster, and chances are if I don't like you I will ignore you without even thinking about it. Sometimes I will just ignore anyone I don't recognize.

Sure. That would be an example of it. There are two types of socialization threads that I've seen.
The first kind is one where people talk about their personal preferences/random stuff and get to know each other. The second kind of socialization thread is what used to be quite common, threads like the Paradise Beach club but with somewhat less roleplaying.

What IS spam?
It varies depending on context, but:
Spam/SPAM: Off-topic, irrelevant and multi-posts that clog the server. This includes posting lots of smilies which is known as Smilie Spam. Also akin to spamming is Post-whoring which is when a player posts anything just to increase the postcount. Spamming to the point where you get deleted is known as Klamathing. Spamming in the forums should be reported through the Moderation forum, and In-game, through the Getting Help Page.

If you aren't popular, what are the odds that this would happen if it was all coincidence? I'm not a math person, but they are huge.
By the way, it is OKAY to be popular. On here, it means a lot because this is a lot more about personality than it is about looks or age or who has what. That's why all the threads about it today...a lot of people on here want to be in the "in" group and be recognized as a person that people want to talk to. That's all. OH MY GOD!
One of my posts started an entire thread!
*runs about in excitment*
I am SO glad that I am not the only one who feels that way. I think that we all know who the 'popular' ones are, and I was not meaning that in a bad way. I really was interested to see what other people who, like me, are not one of the elite generalites, but enjoy being part of the wider community.
Maybe if, which seems likely, I am able to get as much access to the computer as I do at present and I continue to find threads that amuse and or annoy me, stimulate or make me think, then I may one day get to be one of THEM too......
*runs about a bit more wildly waving hands and squealing*

you think that's bad?
not only is the whole musical score in my head now, but so is the score of "The Sound of Music" because it's also Rogers and Hammerstien and Julie Andrews (although to be fair I did like Lesley Ann Warren as Cinderella in the 1965 TV version better, but probably because Ginger Rogers was in that one)

Well, I voted for the "political ideology" option, but not because I think people "band together".
It's just that when somebody espouses an ideology that I personally hold to be just plain wrong or even downright idiotic, it doesn't really matter if he can lay out his position in an incredibly eloquent and rational manner, I'd still be more inclined to say "What a jerk!" instead of "Yeah, what he says is utter bullshit, but I really respect him for the way he says it!". Of course I may just be an intolerant bitch. *shrug*
Of course I may just be an intolerant bitch. *shrug*Nah, I agree with you ('cept for the "intolerant bitch" part).
I think it features a lot too. I wouldn't respect a Nazi no matter how eloquent or well thought through their posts may seem (or however good their spelling might be). It's not as important as how good your arguments are, but it does matter to some degree.

Admitting to a natural inclination to disregard those who espouse an opposed ideology is hardly an indication that you're an intolerant bitch. It actually speaks well for your honesty.

With me it is post count and quality of posts. I don't have many posts, but admittedly, if somebody has under 100 posts I tend to skip over what they have said no matter how eloquent or well thought out it may be. Also, the quality of posts has a lot to do with it. I'll read a post and if I like what a person says I'm more inclined to read the next thing they post, whereas if I think the person is an idiot, I tend to completely ignore their posts.

03-04-2006, 22:03
I think that nation age and quality of posts should be more important, but I voted for postcount, because that is what seems to actually gain one popularity around here (Or at least recognition). Having a cool name helps, I suppose, but seeing as most people probably name their nations without thinking of what their forum posts will look like, I suppose it is not that important.
Obviously being an old (In NS terms) guy who barely posted at all for years, but it a bright cookie (Well, I like to think, anyway), I am biased.

Aside from saying you are a girl, there are three critical features to becoming popular: post count, posting early, and concise, quirky posts.
The first is simply a general given of posting on any forum where there's a high turnover: if you only post 500 messages, then it wouldn't matter if your posts paved the way for curing herpes, solved world hunger, and established concretely the existence of God. This is because no one would recognize your name, and aside from an average of three posts by tokers looking for donuts, two religious fundamentalists condemning you to hell, and a libertarian reciting lessons from The Fountainhead, no one would therefore respond to your work.
This leads me to the second critical feature, namely posting early. Over 3.5 years in time (the rough length of NS existence), it requires only a modicum of effort to beat North-Eastern Europe and Parratoga for overall post count. After all, you only need roughly 17000 posts, and that averages out to a fairly reasonable 13 posts per day. Unfortunately, if you only post 13 posts per day, especially early on before you've made a name for yourself, then it doesn't establish name recognition, and name recognition is ultimately what you are going for. So the real trick is to flood the forum with your presence for the first month or so of your nation's existence. You don't need to display any particular skill or debating style, just be everywhere. Also, it helps if you have a catchy trait, like Normack's two-word posts or Danya's incessant desire for approval.
The third point is that when you make these posts, the shorter, the better. You see the paragraph above this one? Way too long. It packs in so much information that most people just skip over the post. So if you are going for a Kung-Fu Master or Philosopher-style of debating, you need to learn to make your paragraphs no more than four sentences, and use clear, concise language. If you are going for any other style, you had best stick with quick, and even better quirky one or two-sentence paragraphs. For examples of successful use of the latter technique, I'd direct you to Lunatic Goofballs or Pablo the Squirrel.

It's partly my fault. I don't generally make long thoughful posts because my gut reaction is to respond emotionally rather than intellectually. It can make me look like a damn fool, so I've sort of weaned myself away from deep heavy debates. Unfortunately, short answers don't win you many friends. Sometimes I'm not so sure I want to know what they think of me around here.
