Death Penalty.. You silly silly thing you!

So I'm sitting here researching the death penalty for a debate we have to do in history (my team is pro-death penalty).. I came across this, http://www.prodeathpenalty.com/Methods.htm

I was looking for info.. but what I found.. was interesting..

Like did you know in Idaho, Oklahoma, and Utah give the choice of firing squad.. Delaware offers hanging.. And electrocution is still offered in many states..

Aren't thes methods banned or something? Shouldn't they be?

And why do the inmates get the right to choose how they die?

And I find it funny that DC doesn't have capital punishment.. dunno.. just do..

Arizona authorizes lethal injection for persons sentenced after 11/15/92; before that date methods are lethal injection or lethal gas at the inmate's choice.

Arkansas authorizes lethal injection for those sentenced on or after 7/4/83; before that date, methods available are lethal injection or electrocution at the inmate's choice.

Delaware authorizes lethal injection for those sentenced on or after 6/13/86; before that date, methods available are lethal injection or hanging at the inmate's choice.

Florida authorizes lethal injection for those sentenced on or after 1/14/00; before that date, methods available are lethal injection or electrocution at the inmate's choice.

Kentucky authorizes lethal injection for persons sentenced on or after 6/1/98; before that date, methods available are lethal injection or electrocution at the inmate's choice.

Maryland authorizes lethal injection for persons sentenced after 3/11/94; before that date methods are lethal injection or lethal gas at the inmate's choice.

New Hampshire authorizes hanging only if lethal injection cannot be given.

Oklahoma authorizes electrocution if lethal injection is ever held to be unconstitutional and firing squad if both lethal injection and electrocution are held unconstitutional.

Tennessee authorizes lethal injection for those whose capital offense occurred after 12/31/98; those who committed the offense before that date may select lethal injection or electrocution.

Utah authorizes lethal injection for persons sentenced after 3/15/04; before that date methods are lethal injection or firing squad at the inmate's choice.

Wyoming authorizes lethal gas if lethal injection is ever held to be unconstitutional. However, the gas chamber facility at the old state prison in Rawlins is no longer usable.

The method of execution of Federal prisoners is lethal injection. For offenses under the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, the method is that of the state in which the conviction took place.

Silly silly laws..

How do you feel about these methods? Or do you just not support the death penalty?

Just shoot the stupid heads and leave it at that. Seriously, if I ever committed a capital offense, I'd want the chair, not some pansy injection.

It's a shame they're phasing out hanging. I'm not exactly in favour of the death penalty, but if i had to be executed that would be my choice. There's just something so wonderfully demonstrative about it.

I can't recall where, so this may very well not be true, but I think I read or heard somewhere that they swab an inmate's arm with disinfectant before they give the lethal injection. Why would you waste disinfectant on the arm of a guy you're about to kill? Surely it won't matter if he gets an infection or not?

In my country we offer choices of

Stabbing with pointy sticks
Pinching really really hard
Being in a horrible place with yukky people
Being stared to death
having the shit scared out of you

and my own personal favorite...death by chocolate

I'm against the death penalty, mainly because of the ridiculously long appeals process, and the fact that people are executed that shouldn't be. That, and I really don't trust the government to do it right.

Lucky for me that my state was the first Western government to ban the death penalty in 1846.

Just to make sure - the prisoner gets to choose his own method of execution? I'd definitely have to go with the firing squad... just to be different.

Why should any of these methods be banned? They are not nearly as painful and drawn out as I would propose for certain crimes...

Sure, give the inmate a choice. Of how he is to die. Why not? We give them a nice last meal...:sniper:

And yes, they do swab them with disinfectant before inserting the needles. Just in case it doesn't work, we don't want a live infected inmate suing the state...

And why is this a "silly silly" subject?

Somehow I think if an inmate survived a lethal injection the prison service would have more to worry about than getting sued. Cos they just found a guy immune to poison. Or whatever it is they have in lethal injections.

EDIT: According to wikipedia the needles and all that are sterilised to protect the people handling them, and in case them victim gets a stay of execution after the needle has been inserted. Also their arm is swabbed with alcohol because as well as being an antiseptic it causes the veins to rise to the surface of the skin, making inserting the needle easier.

Whack? A *dull* guillotine? I'd prefer something that made a nice slice as it came down.

I think there are more important things to worry about than a bit of disinfecteant.
