I've always been curious... how many people are lurking on NS at any given time? And why don't you post? Don't you think you've got something to say?
Or rather, what kind of thread would you post in? What topics interest you?

Own up - post here!

I end up lurking when something's interesting but I don't have anything to contribute. If the thread is really long I sometimes read some of it, but usually don't say anything in fear of being moaned at for repeating something.

I usually find that by the time I get to a thread, 2 or 3 people have already posted what I was going to say. I think that the time difference plays a big part in that.

I post fairly regularly, but I've been on the forums for two years and my post count is much lower than that of many people who've only been here for a few months or so. As a general rule of thumb, I only respond to threads if I'm interested in them in the first place and if the point I wished to make hasn't already been made. I enjoy reading the discussions, though.

My boyfriend, who's also been here two years, visits General most nights, but he only has about 4 posts. His reasoning for not posting is that things move so quickly and he can't be arsed to try and keep track of them.

I think I qualify as a lurker. The reason I don't post much is I don't have time to keep up with the threads after I've posted. Yeah, the email updates are one option, but I just have too much "real life" to deal with. I don't mean that as a slight to anyone who spends most of their time here. I just don't have the time to choose to dedicate here. I work full time, I'm a full time student, a full time daddy and I'm in a play this weekend. I really just do not have the time. I do, however, like to peruse the forum and some of the threads... especially when my wife (who is strongly addicted to the forums) gets into it with someone.

The key for me is to not keep up with the threads after I've posted unless I really care about them. I post in tons of threads that I don't care about, and that I just stop caring about after I've posted in them. Only a select few threads do I follow consistently and post multiple times in. I can see how trying to follow all your threads can be overwhelming. That's why you just don't. :D

Now I have a question, I have been about since 2003, and I don't have a very high post count. I didn't used to post, just read, but recently I have started to post. I find that there is a bit of a 'club' of regular posters, who are prolific, there are also some who post less often but are well known. At what point does one stop being a nOOb and become a member of the elite? Is it a post volume thing? or is there some point at which you post so often that people can no longer ignore you or what? I was just wondering, because I have noticed that some people (it has not happened to me) have made a point of mentioning the post count as if a low count is a bad thing and precludes you from having a valid opinion. I was just wondering if that is why there are so many lurkers....because they find it intimidating to join in? I know that I did at first, also I don't tend to join in the 'who on NS...' threads as it is always the same people and I feel that I am not one of them...

Does that make sense to anybody? or shall I go back into my paranoia bunker with the evil head voices? :p

It makes sense to me, I lurked for a while before I joined in on a debate. There are def. "the cool kids" and it's scary to post at first because there is that fear of rejection. I say stick around until they have to notice you.

Yes, I am a lurker. I posted a few on some of the topics awhile back...but most of the time I can't find a thread that I want to post in...or someone's already said what I want to say.

Also, my friend is always distracting me by singing crazy Hot Hot Heat songs across the table...in the wrong key, no less. Just an afterthought.

All us lurkers should pick a topic and write about it! Yes, random enthusiasm ensues.

makes sense to me, and i suppose the only point you're talking about is the point at which people start to remember your name and recognise your posts, or begin to see a personality (or at least politics) behind the name. extreme posters can post just once or twice and still be remembered (UN Ambassidorship, Gilliam Returns (not a noob but still counts to illustrate my point), anyone?)... others can post for weeks or months and not get a look-in. if you have a recognisable or memorable name, that helps, but for the most part its just sticking around long enough to be seen to be part of the place, recognised, known and eventually accepted, as with any 'club' (anyone who says NS, or any forum, isn't cliquey is deluding themselves).
postcount is a bit of an indicator there in that it takes both time and posts to get recognised - the longer you stick around or the more you post, the higher your postcount will be; hence its something of an indicator of... something.
its not really validity of opinion - i'll respect the opinion of most noobs as much as a regular poster, but i'll most likely respond to a regular poster because i know who they are, where they're coming from, i know i can have a laugh with most of them and not get too serious, and know that if i bother to consider and type out a reply to an arguement, the regular will be more likely to reply and engage in intelligent debate than some noob i don't know who either may not be on here very often, or who might not come back at all.

but don't worry Carisbrooke, i've marked you down as a regular now ;)
mostly cos i recognise you and know something about you... i feel like i'm not just talking to a faceless name but an actual person... i don't know if any of that makes sense :p

I guess I'm a lurker... kinda... sorta... I think. I originally had no intention of ever even getting into the forums. But then, something caught my eye, I remembered a quote from a book which I thought would be a cool sig, and I got sucked into this evil internet version of Hotel California(as someone else here calls NS in their sig). What really sucks is that my 3 posts(now 4)are evil long-assed things that should be killed-killed until they're dead. And then killed some more. Then blown up, put into a bus filled with manure that's being pushed over a cliff by a suicidal Mickey Mouse, tortured via being tied to a chair and forced to watch the horror that is Barney, shot, burned, and thrown it a black hole. It just seems like, whenever I post, I'm tired and feeling more random than normal-I don't even talk 3/4's this much in RL. The aforementioned methods of destruction also includes this post.

Edit:
According to the thing underneath my name and date of joining, I have six posts.... but I don't remember the other 2. Do they count almost posted, but didn't post, posts?

Okay let me see. I am a liberal, I think Scandanavian and Canadian politics are great. I am pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, and I am pro-animal rights. I think very strongly that people should have to qualify to become parents and sterilize the rest. Coincidentally (;)) I work with what would be considered "at-risk" parents (single, teen, poor, handicapped, mentally ill, anger problems, risk for child abuse) and it is pretty rough. I'm in grad school for school counseling. I have a dachshund and I regularly donate to the local animal shelters. I live near Baltimore but I used to live in Yorkshire, UK. I can't tell jokes very well because I never remember how they're supposed to go.

Lurker... so THAT's what they call me? actually I like NationStates as a concept rather than a social network. The idea of my own little internet-nation... Anyway I'm mainly into political literature, and reading the forums fills me with enough of it for days!

How's that?

okay, I do remember you, but I wasn't matching your name with you....if that makes any sense. I remember talking to you about child development and stuff. yeah.

I have strong opinions on some things, but I don't know if I am liberal or right or left or wobbling about on the fence really, I just AM. I like talking..and laughing. I giggle, I cry easily and I am emotional and sentimental. I am sensual and smell great (the Canadian told me!) and I like loads of different stuff.

People who equate post count with validity here are idiots.

I am a lurker, and have been around for years. I often read General when I am waiting for something to happen on the Rping Forums, of which I am moderately active.

When I started NS, I used to debate religion and so on all the time, but soon found that every good and thughtful debate usually ended up the same way.

"You are entitled to your opinion, and I would never force my beliefs on anyone, however, I believe X. The reason I believe X is based on Y grounds that are drawn from source A, B, and C. Is there a fallacy of logic in my arguement?"

"You are a nazi bigot. I f---ing hate all Christians!"

"Um, OK, like I said, you are entitled to your opinions, but do you have anything to add about the conversation we are having, I do enjoy constructive debate."

"F--- You! Your God is a f--, even though he never existed! A Pastor once wasn't nice to me! You reprsent all of teh wars and hatred in the world! I can't tolerate your intolerance! I hate anyone who hates other people! F--- You!"

Eventually, I just stuck to Rps.

I still read the threads, shake my head at the poor Christian that tries to explain the faith and gets bashed for it, and shake my head even more at the Christian who just starts attacking everyone like a nOOb!

I suspect I qualify as a lurker; not many posts, and one of them was on a fluffle thread, so that doesn't really count!

My girlfriend, who is a more regular poster than I, summed up earlier in the thread my reasons for not posting much.

My lack of posts certainly is not representative of a dearth of strong opinion; however, the forums move much too quickly for me (as some other posters have noted). I used to involve myself heavily in e-mail discussion lists, where a heavy day involved reading and responding to 20-odd posts - so you can imagine that following things here is mostly beyond me. Even where I find interesting threads, anything worthwhile has usually been said by the time I get round to reading.

Ah, now if only I had the luxury of posting from work...

I didn't realise the google maps had got that detailed... I'm scared... oh.. just checked the area for my student halls and that picture is quite out of date. It doesn't have the most recent halls that were built. The postcode doesn't point at the right block so I feel safe posting this.

Do I count as a lurker? I missed being a 2002 nation by 11 days (that's so sad, I still remember my join date... of all the things to remember. Sad!) and I only have about 1200 posts. That's about 1 post per day. I tend to go through spurts of NSing, where I'll post lots and then stop for a couple of months (I think I might be heading for another lull as I'm getting bored of the debates).

I know who you are Ilie, I don't remember specific posts, but liberalishness, reasonableness and leftishness came to mind. I'll follow in your foot steps. Do people know who I am? Does my name register? Is my post count laughable? Does my join date inspire fear?

*cries* I'm the only one left of my group of friends, that joined NS, that's left. I'm all alone in my region. But I can't leave it. I can't let it die. We had 50 people in the region and it was a very active region once. :(

I remember the population races. One of my friends despite a join date of a few days later eventually over took my population. I think he got to 100 million before me.

Well, still, I read a few topics and don't post. I'd say I'm 2.5% lurker.

Well, still, I read a few topics and don't post. I'd say I'm 2.5% lurker.Well, so do I... but if I don't post in them it's mostly because I find them boring... not that I'm saying most threads on NS are boring. Certainly not. Mainly because I don't get to read most of the threads on NS.

Where was I? I don't know. I'm tired. I want to go to bed. What's more is that I actually might.

The other 2/3 weren't even in General... they were from some retarded RP war that a member of my region dragged me into. Thankfully, that died quickly, and I was able to go back to browsing the forums in peaceful seclusion.

... Oh, wait, I wasn't supposed to say anything. Drat! I'll shut up now.

It is a Local Shop for local people. Tubbs and her husband (and brother), Edward, do not approve of non-local outsiders who do not understand their local customs and local ways. They are extremely distrustful of anyone not local (and usually end up killing anyone not local). Although their shop (which they inherited from their mother) is full of "precious things", they are loathe to part with their stock. Tubbs wears a wedding band made of string, eats hair sandwiches, and eats onions as though they were apples.

Back lurking! The influx of regulars into their thread activates the 'lurker' instinct.... much like junkies on the main st., dislike of bright light makes them scuttle into the darkness! :D

I'm a big lurker. Reading about the conundrums of people I don't even know is just so damn entertaining.

Unfortunately, this place is also full of witty people so I have less opportunity to unleash my normally devestating one-liners.

I'm also not really opinionated enough to make a splash in a place like NS General.

Hello.

I haven't been lurking too long. Haven't been around too long. Usually I have plenty to say, but the way my life has been going lately I haven't felt like engaging in debates. I don't have the energy for it, and too much feeling that doesn't need to be channelled into senseless arguement.

Mostly I've just been lurking to distract myself.
