I was doing some research for a persuasive paper tonight, and stumbled across this little gem on an anti-gay marriage web site.


To condone Gay Marriages is to break this law. And to encourage child molestation and other aberrant behaviors. God’s law says that Sodomy is unhealthy, sinful and should be delt with disastrously as in his judgment on Sodom and Gomorra. To even look back is to seek sin and garner destruction as with Lott’s Wife. History itself purports that one of the causes of the Great Roman Empire’s downfall had to do with rampant homosexual relations and general excepted debauchery. As well as lead poisoning from the pipes.

So the fist issue here: apparently supporting gay marriage means you supprt child rape.

Second, gays caused led poisioning in the pipes of the roman empire.

I think he's saying that homosexuality brought the death of the Roman Empire- the "lead pipe comment" seems to be just thrown in there. Of course, I could argue that when "homosexuality" was present, the Romans were at their height and when Christianity came into the Roman Empire c.330, it started to fall apart. Notice how the pagan Romans- with their "homosexuality and debauchery" (never mind even the pagan Romans had in fact banned homosexuality) kept an Empire going for 500 years to Constantine's time, yet when the Empire became officially Christian under Theodosius in c.380 or so, it had barely 100 years left (well, the West anyway- besides, the East's story was just a slow collapse really). Someone's not getting their history right. :rolleyes:

of course the collapse of the roman empire (due to over expansion, internal political tension etc) created a cultural vacuum. humanity entered a dark age, and all Roman structure collapsed. As a result christianity offered stability and faith in this time of turbulence (hence its spread). we have now come out of the dark age (beginning with the enlightenement) and therefore soceities relience on the divine is decreasing. dont worry religious people the world will be returned to a godly state after this civilization collapses.

What I find particularly funny is that this person globalizes each part of the Bible so that anything that anyone was told to do ever is a sin. Lot's wife was told not to look back at the burning of Sodom and Gamorah. This person claims that to ever look back is a sin, and then goes on to look back at Rome with ever-so-blurry hindsight. I guess it ain't always 20/20, huh?

There's several ways you could go with 'tart'. It could be a prostitute rather than a sort of pie. Just go "Pretty Woman" on her to untart. It wasn't actually the pipes that did it. The pipes limescaled up so not much lead actually got into the water supply. What it was was a sauce called sapa, which they made by boiling down wine in lead cooking pots and added it to wine and food as a sweetener. Could still have been the gays though.

Copper piping which we use instead of lead isn't much safer either.

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying. I don't *personally* believe that Christianity destroyed the Roman Empire- I believe it has more to do with stupid/ineffective late Emperors such as Honorius and Valentinian III than it has to do with something like Christianity. My argument was pointing out that the man's incorrect in stating that homosexuality destroyed the Roman Empire because "the homosexual-loving Romans" maintained an Empire for over 500 years or so. It is also a fact that the Western Roman Empire (the typically more "Roman" side of the Empire) did in fact collapse barely 100 years after "becoming" Christian and thus one could say (as Edward Gibbon did) that Rome collapsed because of Christianity. I don't think so- there's nothing about the religion itself that makes it incapable of creating and sustaining an Empire (heck, one could argue Medieval Europe was a Christian Empire and that was pretty stable)- but you still can't deny the West didn't last as long as a Christian state as it did as a pagan one.

Furthermore, the Romans themselves did NOT condone homosexuality, unlike the ancient Greeks (who, I should point out, had no concept of "homosexuality"- they had a concept of "human beauty", meaning that anyone could be loved and didn't differentiate that love like we do today). Read about "The Queen of Bithynia" if you don't believe me.
