A Thread About Music

As some of you may know, I'm a HUGE music fan. I have a grand total of 400GB of hard drive space, and about 90% of that is music. I have literally months of music stored here, and I like pretty much all of it.

Naturally, I like some more than others, and my tastes do vary over time. Right now, I'm obsessing over Billy Talent, an alternative post-punk band from Canada. Rufio is hot too, but I can't find any torrents. :(

Every few months, I go on a downloading spree where I download about 5GB of new music, and I seek suggestions from anywhere I can for new and interesting sounds. So, list some of your favourite bands/albums, so I can steal them to add to my collection.

Some of mine: (bolded = extra hot)

12 Stones, 30 Seconds to Mars, 311, AFI, Air, Aphex Twin, Alanis Morrisette, Arctic Monkeys, Basement Jaxx, Beethoven, Billy Talent, Bjork, Bloc Party, Blondie, Boards of Canada, Bodyrockers, Cake, cKY, Coldplay, Collective Soul, Daft Punk, Dashboard Confessional, David Bowie, Diamond Nights, Disturbed, Death Cab for Cutie, Echo and the Bunnymen, Editors, Electric Six, Faithless, Fall Out Boy, Fiona Apple, Funeral for a Friend, Foo Fighters, Franz Ferdinand, Goldfrapp, Gorillaz, Green Day, Green Jelly, Interpol, INXS, James Blunt, Jamaroquai, KT Tunstall, Keane, Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs, Kanye West, Ladytron, LLC Soundsystem, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Motion City Soundtrack, Maroon 5, Missy Elliot, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Muddy Waters, My Chemical Romance, Mylo, Marylin Manson, Maximo Park, NERD, Nerf Herder, Nickleback, Nirvana, NIN, OAR, Queen, Razorlight, REM, Rob Zombie, Rage Against the Machine, Rammstien. Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Ricky Martin, Radohead, Savage Garden, Scissor Sistors, Sevendust, Shinedown, Silverstien, Simple Plan, Snow Patrol, Staind, Sunn O))), Switchfoot, System of a Down, Tatu, Tchaikovsky, Tenacious D, The Beatles, The Bravery, The Clash, The Dandy Warhols, The Killers, The Libertines, The Magic Numbers, The Offspring, The Postal Service, The Pussycat Dolls, The Shins, The Smiths, The Smashing Pumpkins, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Theory of a Deadman, Trapt, Weezer, We are Scientists, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Placebo.

I currently have 31 albums downloading.

EDIT: I am not picky. I will listen to anything, in any genre bar "happy hardcore." Also, I won't make fun of your choice in music. Though I fully expect this thread to devolve into another fight over whose taste in music is "better", I'd love it if you'd all refrain from doing so and simply appreciate music as is.

Well, if you are down for just crazy-ass instrumentals, I would reccomend Indian Classical, like, say, anything by Ravi Shankar. Maybe some Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath...or for real insane old school folk/jazz you might try some Django Reinhardt...Also, I would reccomend Phish.

Eh, I only bolded those that appeal to me at this moment. I've not listened to The Postal Service for a few months so *shrug*. I'm a big fan of every band in that list, I'm just listening to the bolded ones more often right now.

Billy Talent, eh? They've got potential but I'm still waiting for a coherent album. Maybe "II" will show some progress. Here's hoping.

(I'm also surprised the band got play in Scotland. Last I heard they were only really big in Canada).

As far as what I like- I just direct everyone here:

www.geocities.com/corneriarocks

It's my own personal music review Site which I've been running for the past four years now. Contains more about my tastes than I can put in one post.

To the OP: might I interest you in Dala (www.dalagirls.com)? I figure you might enjoy them if you're big on Alanis Morissette.

A few bands/musicians I've been enjoying listening to this weekend: Arcade Fire, Antony & The Johnsons, Caribou, Cold Chisel, Grandaddy, Machine Translations, Sodastream & Spiderbait.

I believe "Try Honesty" actually made the US Rock chart, so it received *some* play, but it wasn't literally everywhere like it was in Canada.

Hmm... Am I right in thinking Canada is undergoing a punk revival or something? At the very least, three of the bands I've been recommended tonight have been Canadian indie/punk bands. Punk is a relatively unexplored genre for me but indie isn't, so if you know of any new punk bands I might not have heard before I'd appreciate a mention ;)

Well, I could list bands that everyone's heard of, but that's boring, and I feel like being a pretentious snob, so....some of the moderately-to-largely obscure stuff I like...

Kyuss, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, the Melvins, Electric Wizard, Boris, Sleep, Cathedral, Candlemass, Nebula, Clutch, AstroQueen, Down, Mudhoney, TISM, The Black Keys, The Sonics, Butthole Surfers, Corporate Avenger, Screaming Trees, Love Battery, Spiderbait, Stiff Little Fingers, Angelic Upstarts, The Partisans, Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, The Dwarves, Bad Brains, Refused, The Jesus Lizard, Napalm Death, The Birthday Party, For Squirrels, 65daysofstatic, Explosions in the Sky. That'll do.

Mudhoney, Butthole Surfers, TISM, Spiderbait, Stiff Little Fingers, Angelic Upstarts, The Partisans, Cock Sparrer, Cockney Rejects, The Dwarves, Bad Brains, Refused, The Birthday Party, The Jesus Lizard

Are all varying shades of "punk" to some degree. The Sonics are 60's proto-punk, so you might like them too.

That depends on what you call "punk". I won't venture a guess since the punk fans themselves can't seem to agree on it and I'd rather not get caught in that quagmire.

Certainly the case can be made for upbeat, uptempo rock or whatever else you want to call it making a bit of a resurgence in Canada: a lot of our most popular bands- Metric, Hedley, Alexisonfire, Simple Plan, Not By Choice, etc.- could fall into that category, and the indie scene is dominated by this stuff. It has, however, been going on for a while though, and some of the "newer" bands have already fallen through the cracks- Sum 41's "Chuck" or "Does This Look Infected?" didn't command the airwaves quite like "All Killer No Filler" did.

On a brighter note, "Wiseman" just hit the MuchMusic Countdown. I can't wait for the storm to form on that one...

Well, I listen to mostly industrial, ebm, darkwave, that kind of stuff. Occasionally punk and some other random stuff. I don't know if that appeals to you at all, but I could recommend some of those bands...

Some ones I really like right now are The Cruxshadows, Apoptygma Berzerk (yes that is the name of my nation), VNV Nation, Seabound, Razed in Black, Depeche Mode (I'm sure you've heard of them :P ), Covenant, Combichrist, Skinny Puppy... and of course many others...

For punk and alternative, which I usually only listen to when I'm feeling angry or very political, my favorites are Anti-flag, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Dead Kennedys, and NOFX.

I also admittedly like Fall Out Boy... oh and The Libertines are (were) a great band. Have you heard anything by The Decembrists? Patrick Wolf (I really like that song The Libertine by him) and Blue October might also be worth trying.

I am partial to some Industrial and Darkwave now and then, but have never really explored the genre well enough to come up with a definitive idea of what makes a good industrial band. I'll try some of your suggestions. I've probably heard some of the Decembrists since I've heard their name before...

And Mindset, of the bands you listed at the begining, most of them should come with a federal health warning attatched. Alanis Morrisette for christs sake.

Unfortunately i sit here with a puny 2 and a half days worth of music, including a morcheeba album i grow to loathe with a passion.

The decemberists warmed up for Death Cab at central park last year and they were... OK, nothing special.

If you havn't picked up Ida, Sondre Lerche (Who has a new album coming out this year), Placebo (who have a new album out now), MUSE (who have a new album out next month), Goldfrapp (who have a new album out... OK yes i'll stop.

Cat Power, Mandalay, Lemon Jelly, Camper Van Beethoven, To Rococo Rot, Tortoise, Phoenix, Nine Horses, or the Unicorns (RIP).

Of course it wouldnt hurt to add a little Gling Glo in there, Bjork singing incomprihensible icelandic ballroom music certainly add class, well maybe not class as such.

Seeing those names sitting together like that makes me giggle. Especially the thought of poor little Tchaikovsky sitting in the middle, clutching his Symphonies to his chest.

Anyway, I've no idea what "happy hardcore" means, and wikipedia's explanations of musical genre simply make feel tired of life. So, I'll just offer Sharron Kraus, as someone who is, assuredly, neither happy nor hardcore.

It seems my musical tastes are once again proven to be on a different wavelength than most everyone else around. Here are some of the most recent songs on my playlist (Not necessarily the best I've ever heard, but certainly enjoyable):

Great Big Sea - Berry Picking Time - Nothing beats Eastern Canadian music
The Jungle Book - Bare Necessities - Classic
The Similou - All This Love - A fun new band from Sweden. Yay!
Praise Cats - Shined On Me - Okay, so the grammar stinks, but otherwise...
Reliant K - Be My Escape - The closest thing to punk that I enjoy
The Happenings - I Got Rhythm - There are so many versions to this song, and each one has ups and downs
Wolter Kroes - Wat Een Heerlijke Dag - My Dutch is pretty bad, but it's a fun song nonetheless
Wise Guys - Jetzt Ist Sommer and Weltmeister - These guys are awesome
Mustafa Sandal - Araba - I'm not really a car-loving person, but I gotta love this car song
Nena - Leuchtturm (Both the new and old versions) - I just love catchy tunes

I know that is ten, but if I can suggest another German band it would be PUR; and another Canadian band would be Mes Aïeux, who I saw live, their song Degeneration is super.

P.S.: Keep in mind that Ottawa just flipped from Winter to Summer, without having any Spring (Seriously, a 20-degree shift in two weeks!) so I have been pumping my veins with happy Summer music.

So I finally listened to a couple of her songs, seeing how you keep mentioning her (and how you liked Shawn Colvin :)), and while I can't say I like her music too much, I still wanted to ask you what the other artists were you usually bring up in these threads. I know there were more, but I'm having a complete black-out on the names.

Kraus' voice was a bit too grating for my taste, though she reminded me a lot of Nanci Griffith (whose music is, of course, very different); and the music in some of the songs just about drove me crazy :p and reminded me of the little I know of Beth Orton - you listen to her, too?

Congrats for having an open mind (and a very open hard drive) for all kinds of music. Let me eclecticize back at you!

XTC (Black Sea and other pre-1984 is punker, The Big Express and after that are more produced and melodic -- all are terrific, but avoid Go2 and White Music like the plague)
Steely Dan (1972 to 1980 and 1999-present, it's all good)
Hector Berlioz
They Might Be Giants (start with 1990's Flood and work backward for weirdness and forward for polish and orchestration)
Thomas Dolby (recommend starting at the beginning -- The Golden Age of Wireless -- and going forward as synth gives way to blend with songwriting)
Terence Trent D'Arby (recommend Introducing the Hardline and Vibrator
Super Sonic Soul Pimps (like R.H.Chili Peppers with a Seattle twinge)
The Bobs (a cappella vocals meet pop, classic rock arrangements, microphone effects and goofiness)
Moxy Fruvous (start with You Will Go To the Moon)
Monte Montgomery (country meets talent; recommend Mirror)
Us3 (the only rap group on famous jazz label Blue Note -- for a damn good reason; recommend Hand on the Torch)
Jill Sobule (all of Morrisette's anger without the angst, a sweeter voice, plus an indomitable willingness to write cleverly about Mary Kay Letrouneau, "Mary Kay"; Israeli prostitutes, "Tel Aviv"; the supposed gay Agenda, "Under the Disco Ball"; the truth about love, "Love Is Never Equal"; her deformed feet, "Big Shoes"; her religion, "Jesus Was a Dreidel Spinner"; and bosses with secret lives "Karen by Night". In case this hasn't shown it, I'm a huge fan.)

'80s punk/hardcore bands worth checking out: Cryptic Slaughter, Government Issue (their later stuff became more melodic), the Plasmatics, Husker Du, The Replacements

'90s and Newer punk bands: The Epoxies, My Chemical Romance, Bikini Kill, the Gits, the Lunachicks

However, before you check them out, I recommend both Local H and Therapy?, two "alternative" bands.

How was "Never Apologise Never Explain"? I heard "High Anxiety" and wasn't too big on that one.

Hmm.... Just listing from the top of my head.

Bad Religion, Anti Flag, Dead Kennedys (when my head is feeling well enough that I don't risk an awful headache from listening to the), NoFX, The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Fugazi, Protest the Hero, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Flogging Molly, Rise Against (the only Emo band you'll ever catch me listening to), Sonic Youth, Mission of Burma, Agnostic Front, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish (I like Sellout and some of their stuff... Other parts of it suck), Against Me!, and Operation Ivy on the punk front (and I'm always looking for some good real punk, since it's so lacking these days).

Lately I've picked up some Power Metal as well:

Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Dragonforce, Rhapsody, and Elvenking so far.

People I've mentioned before, I suppose that would be:

Loreena McKennitt (celtic/folk influences, with lyrics that often either reference or rip-off the Romantic poets and Shakespeare, and then they threw in a harp playing Canadian for bonus points; get one of the albums after her first though, as they're more polished)
Fiona Joyce (originally dark folkish, but she's supposed to be "evolving" these days. Into a butterfly, I guess.)
Mia Doi Todd (especially, Come Out Of Your Mine, and even more especially "Jackals")
Rammstein (is there anything I can say that hasn't already been said?)
Rene Gruss (he does purely instrumental peices, heavy on the piano and guitar)
and Hector Berlioz for Romantic era orchestral(the Symphonie Fantastique was the groundbreaking musical perversion of its time, the Dies Irae near the end of Part V still gives me chills).
After that, a fun little musical trick I discovered to make anyone an atheist.
Listen to Electric Hellfire Club and Marilyn Manson (they say there is no God), then listen to "Pat Boone Does Metal" (he proves there is no God), and then listen to some Christian Death Metal, (they reveal that God's followers are huge dorks).
Kraus' voice was a bit too grating for my taste, though she reminded me a lot of Nanci Griffith (whose music is, of course, very different); and the music in some of the songs just about drove me crazy :p and reminded me of the little I know of Beth Orton - you listen to her, too?
Yeah, I get that from a lot of the people I recomend her to, and the music/voice can get be too much at times ("The Song of the Hanged Man", for instance, but I can't help but love the carny feel). The lyrics are the main draw, though.

Theyre the only band i can think of thts good tht i dont reckon anyone else is likely to mention or have mentioned already. Also, "built to spill", sound amazing from what ive herd on pandora (www.pandora.com) but havent actually got any of their albums yet as the one i want doesnt seem to be available within the uk.

Glenn branca is another obscure one, but im only half into him.

I met sum british composer the other day whose music is so beautiful by the name of lawrence crane.

Those are the only non-obvious ppl i can think of.

oh, one more, ME (www.myspace.com/screenburn). :)

Everyone has to grit their teeth and listen to In a Metal Mood by Pat Boone at least once in their lifetime. Its one of those rites of manhood you have to pass to truly be a music nerd.
Basically, once you've managed to sit through Boone crooning the lyrics to "Crazy Train" and "Enter Sandman" without tearing your own ears off, you can survive any torture.
Now that Rene Gruss, on the other hand, sounds really interesting.
I first encountered his stuff when it was making its rounds through the Mostly Classical internet-radio thing. His works tend to be long, and so they can be either nice or boring, depending on the person listening.

Well, if you are down for just crazy-ass instrumentals, I would reccomend Indian Classical, like, say, anything by Ravi Shankar.

For Native American panflute, check out Peter Kater! Anything by Peter is worth the purchase but my personal recommendations are How The West Was Lost 1 & 2!!!
