Who will be F1 Champion 2006?

The Aussie Grand Prix (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/4867208.stm) just finished not two hours ago. An entertaining race. In fact, the previous two were good races as well - I would urge the critics of Formula One to have a look this year.

At any rate, Alonso took it out after a good overtaking maneuvre early on and three very good restarts after the safety car.
A number of drivers, like Villeneuve and Fisichella, plowed their way through the field. And the first American since Fittipaldi, Scott Speed, got his first championship points in 8th place.
Button had a pretty horrible race - after starting on pole, he was falling down the grid before exploding literally metres from the finish line, not scoring any points at all. Pretty spectacular too.

So who do you think will win the championship?
I enjoy F1...gah, I wish I could have watched all of it, but I had to work, so I only caught the last 16 laps or so. Oh well.
EDIT - to answer the question (lol) probably Alonso, but it'd be nice to see Raikkonen take it.

They're passing out on the track now, instead of in the pits? The devil you say!
I haven't followed in a few years since I stopped getting a channel that would play the races and having a predictable enough schedule to be on it. I like Villeneuve and Coulthard. I've never heard of Scott Speed, but I guess I should be rooting for him...or something...go that guy. If there is close racing maybe I might start paying more attention again. I've always like McLarens (goes back to the Porsche engine days...)

F1 is great unfortunatly i only get the opurtunity to watch 1 maybe two races a season.

In case you didn't know...
Alonso Wins Australian GP In Style
Renault's Fernando Alonso won an incident-packed Australian Grand Prix on Sunday to take a 14 point lead in the Formula One standings.
The 24-year-old world champion claimed his second victory in three races this season when he established an early lead then held off McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen to win by less than two seconds on a dramatic afternoon at Albert Park.

My work had a corporate box this year, so I went to practice on Friday (not important enough to rate a race day invitation!). I can actually hear the cars from my house, I'm only about a 10-15 tram ride from the Albert Park track. That said, I find F1 to be a pretty boring form of car racing, because there's very little on track passing/action.

I think Alonso will just stroll daintily to another title, although Raikkonen might push him.
What about Button blowing up ten metres from the line?! Unbelievable.

Raikkonen. Why? Name sounds Finnish.

I'm cheering for Albers, but there's no chance in hell he'll win.
It will probably be a season of Alonso dominating again.

Which is why his name sounds Finnish. People who are not Finnish usually don't have names that don't sound Finnish.

I wish I could say Schumacher, but it will be Alonso probably.

Pfft, why? Schumacher has had his time in the sun...many times, actually. It's nice to see a change.

I dislike Schumacher in the same way NASCAR fans hate Jeff Gordon, though not because he's a pretty boy or a constant winner (the latter gets boring, though-but if I was a fan I suppose I wouldn't care). Mostly it's because of things like his cutting across the field on starts and trying to take out people who are challenging him in the points-he's a good driver, no doubt, but he also drives like a bitch.

I coudln't agree more-- when under pressure he gets reallly bad. In 1997, i don't know if any of you remember this, he was fighting w/ villneuve for the championship in the last race and he pused v. complelty off the track in such a dangerous and unsportlike manner that he was completly disqualified fomr the championship. i think that's the most typical shumi thing ever.
alonso will win this year b/c they have the best car, but i'll argue that hte best driver out there is kimi... by far. hte mclarens aren't as strong this year as i'd like to see them (u can see that in qualifying), but hte renaults are fantastic. schumi's glory days are over, arguably, but it's early to tell....
let's just hope we don't crahs into another single-pilot-single-team dominance era w/ renault....
Alonso will win it. Simple as.

He can't help it being an Hungarian and all.

I disagree with that comment completely.
