Private Island

Sure, there's probably been several other threads the same as this...
A man walks up to you on the street and says: "Hi! I'm Billy Mays from Oxy-Clean!" Before you can run away from him, his evil product, and annoying voice, he grabs you and hands you a check for $1 million. He says you can keep it only if you spend it on either buying an existing private, dredging up a new one, ore somehow causing an island to form. You can also use leftover money to furnish it.
So, what would your island look like? what would be on it? where would it be? how would it be made?
PS: Please no screwed up things like naked lady parades every Sunday. Stay somewhat sane in your plans.
Personally, I'd go for somewhere where earthquakes and hurricanes can't get me...maybe the middle of the Caspian Sea...or the Mediterranean(then I can charge every boat that goes by. It would have some sort of interesting shape, dredged up(unless I can find one with a desirable shape) and just a few square miles...maybe 3. I'd start my own nation on it and rule as some sort of absolute dictator...benevolently though and maybe have a huge casino industry and low taxes...Then I'd have all my friends and such to come join me.

The rock (http://www.aland.fi/) I live on is what my private island(s) would look like you silly!

$1,000,000 wouldn't even dredge you a stump of land in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.
What the hell are you on?

Spidermonkey Island from the voyages of Doctor Dolittle.
Just kidding. I have heard tell of manmade floating islands in Bolivia and Congo though. I wonder if you could build a floating island and how much it would cost. Depends on the size of the island, of course. But it'd be rather cool, methinks, if you were able to build a floating island and build some houses on it, and be able to go down to the Carribean in, say Jan - June, and then head out to the azores and wait out the hurricanes.
yeh, considering islands go for many millions, i doubt i could do much with the money. However if i were to be able to afford one i'd not go for an island exactly. Rather i'd make a floating complex...something along the resort/casino line. There would be permanent hotels for any guests who sailed in but also the possibility to add on permanent residences for any rich enough to want that sort of thing. The complex could move around to avoid bad weather but it'd stay in tropic international waters.

Yeah. $1,000,000 is not nearly enough. But in the spirit of the thread, let's just imagine that money is no object.
I wouldn't make a traditional island, but a large island-like vessel, with a lagoon in the center and submarine observation decks. It would get energy partly from wind, the sun, and different temperatures in the ocean. With it I would sail the seas. Nah, I'd probably end up stuck in the Sargasso Sea.
I would build my off the coast of BC (Canada). It would be pretty well forested, and have just me living on it. It would be my own nation the follows my own rules. Twould be forested, and be large enough to have a freshwater lake on it.

Oh good I'm not the only dreamer. I went shopping for castles the other night...just in case I win that $117mill+ lottery. Might have enough left over to buy a small island. All I know is that it would have trees that produced chocolate and a statue of Jake Gyllenhaal.

While it'd be hard to "dredge up" an island at that price, you can certainly buy an already-existing one (http://www.privateislandsonline.com/sale-price-500K-1M.htm) for less than $1 million.
My ideal island would be in a tropical area, with nice rich soil but enough rock under it so it didn't wash away at the next hurricane.
Buildings-wise, there'd be my hurricane-resistant Dictatorial Manor on the high point in the center (not so high-altitude that getting up to it would be hard for me, though), surrounded by the smaller houses, also hurricane-resistant, that the peasants would live in. I would also officially own all the beaches, although (with the exception of my private beach) most of that area would remain open to the public or leased out to individuals.
As for whether it'd be a "benevolent" dictatorship...if the peasants are benevolent to me (no complaining, revolting, etc), sure...but if they're not, then I will respond likewise...

I would totally buy the entirety of Watch Hill, in Rhode Island, and somehow get it to be Connecticutian land. Just because I hate Rhode Island (plus it has a kick-ass WWII base AND amazing striper fishing!)

What on earth is wrong with naked lady parades? I may as well just remain where I am now.

Is this serious? As far as I know, it is. I've seen that site before, and the islands up for sale seem to change on a normal basis...also nothing else seems to suggest that it's a joke. The site also has some that are way more expensive; that page I linked to is just one of several different price ranges.
Other than it being islands, it seems pretty much like a regular real-estate site in that it helps buyers/sellers find each other, rather than being the place the transaction actually happens.

Wtf do I know about dredging...It seemed the right amount for a small island.

$1M wouldn't buy you a nub of rock in a lake.
