Law regarding UK beer production
In the summer holidays I intend to try my hand at meking some ale, having learned about it in biology. Does anyone have any advice on making it or know if it is legal (I am not yet 18) to make it and possibly selling it informally to friends.

You definitely couldn't sell it.

You need a licence to sell alcohol.
You can make it, but I'm pretty sure you have to be over 18.
Edit: Disclaimer:
It is illegal for persons under the age of 18 to make alcoholic drinks within the U.K. Is also illegal to sell any home-made
beers or wines without a license to do so, within the U.K..
So...you sell something worthless and "give away" a free pint with each purchase?

Kinda like how they get around licensing laws at festivals - you buy a ticket and exchange it for beer.

You can make it, but you are not allowed to sell it....or drink it...use it to wash your hair, it makes it shine and smell like a pub....:p

From my understanding, you can brew you're own beer. I know this because my grandfather used to make his own. You are certanly not allowed to sell it. And it's illegal (apparently) to make you'r own spirits.
So you can make beer, not spirits

My only bit of advice; treat the beer production like you were working in a germ lab. We brewed some in our flat and although it's OK, it's got an hell of an aftertaste because of a slight bacterial contamination.

Unless you plan on producing it on a large scale I wouldnty be concerned about the legality of it. Id worry about how delicious it will be. I made some peach schnapps once. it was nice but it made me sick. Probably too much charcoal. or not enough.

Just don't let Mr. Blair find out about it, and you'll be fine.

Home brewing is cool, I do it myself. You can make some really interesting beers. If you want have proper crack at it, get yourself a kit. Most importantly, make sure you thoroughly sterilise everything before you use it. Otherwise you'll contaminate your beer, with undrinkable consequences.
