With all the railroads and stuff in Europe and Asia, I'd think you could. It wouldn't be direct, but I still think you could. Even beyond Beijing...say New Delhi...and is there a railroad across the Suez Canal?

Of course you can... Why wouldn't you?
It might take you a few weeks, though.

Question is, would it cheaper than a plane ticket? And, if you had reason to go from London to Beijing in the first place, would you have enough time?

Take that one, then change to the Trans-Mongolian. It goes to Beijing.

Not to mention thinking that you'd need to cross the Suez Canal to get there

No you couldn't take a train from London to Beijing. Not that the trains aren't available. You'd just die of boredom before you got to Beijing. Trains=most boring method of travel evar.

I must object. The scenery can be great. Although, on a trp that long, I do suggest that someone actually get off every once and a while.

At least on trains, you can look out the windows and see scenery. On planes, there's fuck all to see out those windows.

Oh yeah, let's watch some clouds! That's a shitload of fun.

Ugh, not only did I have to make a 3 hour train journey, I had to pay 50 euro to do so(cos the guy selling the ticket didn't believe I was fourteen. And I wasn't) and had to endure doing so without my glasses. It sucked hairy ass, I had to have my book inches away from my face in order to read it, and I never knew where I was, cos I wasn't paying attention to the announcements. Damned trains.

It would be more expensive.

Going back to my home town in Germany I have to fly from Dublin to Frankfurt (2 hours), then take the train from Frankfurt to Bamberg (another 2 hours). The train usually costs twice as much as the flight.

What's with the hate guys? Train journeys rock! In fact, they rawk hard tasty abs washerboard style! They beat the hell out of cars, and are only inferior to planes because planes have films and stuff. But yeah, trains - if you can't go with a bunch of friends (which is bloody brilliant) then take a book or two, some music, maybe a few crosswords or something, a laptop if you're feeling fancy, and you're sorted! w00t for trains!

I mean circle around to New Delhi.
New Delhi is not across the Suez from Beijing.

Nah...Trains are awesome. There's lots to see and plenty of time to see it.
Idiot. lol

Hooray for clouds! lol You can also see patchworks of farms. ;)

Let's order a special made car and pay to be hauled at the back of the train or something. We'll have big, fluffy bunk beds, private bathrooms, showers, galley,...

I love trains. It's just any sort of extended sitting and waiting on a vehicle that sucks.

When I was stationed in Germany I'd fly back from Michigan, and that flight would take 8hrs and 34 minutes. From Frankfurt I'd take the train to Friedberg, which is another 45 minutes or so. The time going from the plane to get my luggage and then to the train was almost like a tease, as I had to ride on another damned thing for almost another hour.

*remembers good old days when I heard about the good old days of trains running to Chicago from Western Michigan*

But planes have movies, satilite radio, and the mile high club.

Hate to break it to you, but there wouldn't be a whole lot to see on the Eurostar. I've been on a longer train journey than all of you, I was on a soviet sleeper train from Tashkent to Bukhara. Departed at 8pm, arrived at 8am the next day

Looked something like this http://www.seat61.com/images/SilkRoute-registon-ext.jpg

Ypu can get all the way to Saigon on train. :D

I know Africa, Asia and Europe are all connected by rail links, but not sure how extensive the rail network is. I definately know you can get to Cairo . I'm pretty sure you can't get to sub-saharan african though. It never had a huge unifying power to built cross continental rail networks.
