Gay Marriage and the "Destruction" of the "Sacred Institution"

I keep hearing from people in the political world that gay marriage is "destroying" marriage, and that the "sacred institution" of marriage must be "preserved" and/or "restored". I have a question to ask of all those who have made these claims:

Where has marriage gone...?

...You can't answer can you? It's because marriage hasn't GONE anywhere. The fact that TWO states have legalized gay marriage hasn't destroyed their "sacred institutions" OR the "sacred institutions" of the rest of the country.

And also, who are you to say what is a "sacred institution". If you haven't noticed your "sacred institution" has already gone down-hill BEFORE the idea of gay marriage came about.

Spousal abuse, loveless marriage, divorse, divorse and more divorse...and you're saying that GAY MARRIAGE is destroying your "sacred institution"? People have been "destroying" marriage long before the gays starting standing up for their rights.

The fact of the matter is; gays getting married isn't going to keep YOU from marrying and living a full, productive life.

gay marriage isnt destroying anything. its two people getting married. it shouldnt matter if it is two guys, two girls or a guy and a girl. now, marrying pets, that might be a problem...

Ethnocentric horsehockey. Whether or not gays want to get married has no impact on heterosexual marriages ... period. So meh. [ shrugs ]

From my opinion (that being the opinion of a fairly liberal yet family-oriented Catholic who stands upon tradition like it's going out of style), it's like this....marriage wasn't "invented" by the Church or anything. People were husbands and wives for YEARS before the Church got involved. I can't be buggered into finding the exact dates (computer updates have me crazy-lagging), but I'm pretty sure the Church was only getting into marriage in the first place for political sway, and to keep the masses, well, going to Masses.

There's nothing inherently "sacred" about marriage. It's a civil ceremony. If you get married in the Church but don't have a marriage lisence (sp?) from the State, it's still not a legally recognized marriage, at least not around here. Does that mean nothing to these people? God only comes into play if you CHOOSE to let Him into the marriage situation. Allowing gays to marry is nothing against religion or a sacred institution, it's a civil obligation to treat them like the citizens they are.

Geez. Effing religious nuts, giving the rest of us a bad name.

Tell me about it. I've been trying to make them measure gaydiation in units of Fass, but have so far only met with limited success.

Even though I think homosexuality is an sexual abnormality, I would still allow them to get married. The only thing I'm hesitant on is how far people are willing to let this go. After thinking it over, I think we should allow people to have as many spouses as they please.

Yea, it's a little extreme, but I don't think you can realistically stop people from doing it. Since we've agreed that being straight doesn't work for everyone, why would we think monogamy would? I wouldn't go that far out of my way to discriminate against a person who wanted multiple spouses, regardless of sex and I don't believe anyone else would.

Hmm. Maybe I should consider having two wives. It would have its advantages....

That's OK. Normal things are dull, see heterosexuality.

I have to applaud a gay couple who stand up for their rights and demand that they be treated in the same way as a heterosexual couple, complete with marriage, tax relief and ability to have/adopt children and raise them. To me, marriage is a union between two people who love each other and want to spend their lives together. I had the freedom to do it, and I don't see why two gay people shouldn't be given the same basic civil rights as was given to me and my husband, just because they were born with a preference for someone of the same sex.

YAY for gay marriage:D

it seems to me that the sacred institution of marriage has already been pretty much destroyed by heterosexual couples. its far too late to worry about a few gay guys taking vows.

We're supposed to worry that 'gay marriage' will destroy the 'sanctity' of marriage... and yet, you can get a drive-through wedding... I've even seen 'Elvis' weddings...

Heterosexuals need NO help destroying the 'sanctity' of marriage...

Whose sacred institution exactly ? Christians only - or also Muslems, Hindus, those people from that tiny tribe in Africa that worship the burning shrubbery and so on ? And if Christian only - protestant, catholic, mormon, calvinist... you get the idea. Who exactly is allowed to determine what the "sacred rules of marriage" are ?
