New Age Astrology

The metal/rock vocalist thread is going really well but I noticed that every singer is a guy! I'm curious to see which female vocalists are favored (genere is irrelevant)!!!

I've got two:

Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac
Ann Wilson of Heart

You're all wrong, women suck at everything, including singing.
There has NEVER been a worthy female singer. In fact, many would-be decent songs have been ruined by having females sing them.

Who ever let those bitches stop making sandwiches long enough for them to learn how to sing, anyhow?

No one mentioned so far in this thread even comes close to Aretha in terms of sheer ability and tone quality. Ella Fitzgerald is probably a decent [but fairly distant] second.

And whoever said men can't sing should listen to some Roy Orbison. He's not my favorite artist by any stretch, but he is an excellent vocalist.

I will admit that she doesn't have the pipes of those singers, but this is about vocalists and not voices. Sure she doesn't have the range of other vocalists, but I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who uses her voice to as good an effect.

Neither Johnny Cash or Tom Waits could really sing a lick, but I still consider them two of the greatest rock vocalists ever.

Before you even try to diss Jimi Hendrix, ask yourself this question, "Self, can I play guitar one tenth as well as Jimi Hendrix did?" The answer is no you cant and only a few others have gotten close. As for the Lord of the Rings comment, I'm not even sure who your referring to. Im gonna guess you mean zep because they have like two references in Ramble On. Assuming your talking about Led Zeppelin, as far as I can tell, most of their lyrics are more or less incoherent, so trying to say that they make non-stop references to anything is foolish. AND just because most of their lyrics dont mean much does not make Plant any worse of a vocalist. He had a good voice and used it well.

Before you even try to diss Jimi Hendrix, ask yourself this question, "Self, can I play guitar one tenth as well as Jimi Hendrix did?" The answer is no you cant and only a few others have gotten close.
I'd start with the question of "Self, do I think Jimi Hendrix had any real skill at the guitar? Did I find his music enjoyable on any level of sensation?" Then I would answer no on both counts. Next I'd ask "Self, does the guitar at all affect one's vocal capacity?", again I'd answer no.
yes
You have no concept of the term "Rhetorical question", do you?
(Hint, you don't have to answer that because you've already implied what your answer will be.)
No, they just aren't good/don't make good music.
Sure, and you've listened to them before? You've actually sat down and listened to "All Souls Night", "Song of the Hanged Man", and "Tout va bien" with an open mind?

Little, little man!!! When will you learn never to challenge my immortal ways?
First off, I don't make dumb comments...EVER!!! I speak the truth, which you obviously have a problem accepting for one reason or another!
I didn't bother with knockin' Cream because honestly, I didn't think you were serious in mentioning them! But, since you've proven quite serious indeed, let me burst that bubble for you, too!
Once again, this is a vocals thread! You picked the one member of Cream with absolutely NO talent! Had you been defending Clapton or even Ginger Baker, I would have had mercy on you but Jack Bruce? Top 10 vocalist? I think not!!!
Now, back to Morrison! Jim may have made the top 10 but only because he's Jim! Freddie Mercury crucifies Morrison (and Plant)! It's not even a contest!!! Jim was a decent frontman and I liked and agreed with most of his views but he was definitely not a great vocalist!!!
Oh, and finally, if I may ask, why do you hate women so much? It's really none of my business but I was just curious!

She's horrible....that's like saying Madonna is the sexiest woman alive or Bjork.
Oh come on... Bjork is still a lot better than this Cher mummy or Madonna (bleh!)

Without a doubt Ella Fitzgerald and possibly Billy Holiday.

I'll add a vote to Tarja Turunen. Alas, she's just recently been kicked out. Here's hoping to a worthy replacement.
Yeah, I know, that sucks. I doubt anyone will have such a great voice as hers.

Bjork is the best ever IMO. Honourable mention to Edith Piaf, Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering) and Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins).

Any hot female between the ages of 18 and 29 will do
Most of them can't sing though. And many of those who can sing are neither young nor hot.

She may be one of the hottest singers around but, not outstandingly brilliant.

But anyway, oh. my. god. (http://asahinojutsu.canalblog.com/images/Lacuna_Coil2.jpg)

She can sing English clearer than Tarja Turunen can...and I think she's up there; but please, share your opinion. On the MuchMusic message board (where I used to go) these kind of debates wind up being "Tarja and Cristina are the best and everyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot!" so it's refreshing to see the diversity of opinions here.

Cristina sounds like too many other singers, English diction be damned. Tarja has a much stronger, more creative and distinctive vocal style.

That range and power though...few can hit that. Tarja's a mile ahead, I'll agree on that, but I don't think Scabbia's "average" in terms of singing ability at least. Enjoyability, that's debatable, but skill-wise she's one of the best.

Annie Ross
Dianne Reeves (check her out as the singer in Good Night and Good Luck)
Dinah Washington
Etta James
Ethel Ennis
Greta Matassa
Cassandra Wilson

Anyone who does not say ARETHA FRANKLIN should be hung by their toes and pummeled mercilessly by angry marines with socks full of soap.

Sorry, but shouting doesn't do it for me.

You're all wrong, women suck at everything, including singing.
There has NEVER been a worthy female singer. In fact, many would-be decent songs have been ruined by having females sing them.

Who ever let those bitches stop making sandwiches long enough for them to learn how to sing, anyhow?
Who let you out of your room, little boy?

Just to let you know, women have been singing since song was invented. During the Gregorian Chants, they were in the monestaries singing. They started singing for years and years before they had any standing in society. And buddy, good luck with anything other than your right hand.

Uh...no. Pope Gregory taught men.

The nunneries would have had singers, but not with the same kind of training -- they were vernacular at best. However, women have indeed been singing since grunts became chants.

In my opinion, it really depends on the style of music. For contemporary singers, I would go with Andrea Corr (despite the fact that she's gorgeous and plays the tin whistle). I think her voice goes well with some of the melancholy songs that The Corrs play. And I enjoy some of their adaptations of traditional songs.
