best singer in metal?

Pure Metal

who do you think? i spent 6 hours on the train today listening to a load of old metal stuff i haven't heard in ages... got me pondering this oh-so-important question...

for me, i'd go for perhaps strange choices: either Matt Barlow from Iced Earth or Robb Flynn from Machine Head. or, of course, Bruce Dickinson. then you have the operatic types from Nightwish or Sonata Arctica
or Dimmu Borgir or whatever... but then i don't really like them and i'm just going for general metal-goodness here... but its all down to preference anyway. might do a poll if i can be arsed ;)

I like Michael Kiske's vocals. But Matt Barlow is really good. I don't know. A toss-up between the two. Marco Hietala from Nightwish is good too. He may not be the lead singer, but I like how he sounds.

I'm not sure that Sebastian Bach counts; he's verging into hair metal, which is just an apostacy.

As for me, I have to go with the original: Ozzy. The man speaks like a stroke victim gorging on peanut butter, but he sings really, really well.

Robb Flynn from Machine Head.

Seconded.

I'd also vote for pretty much any singer from any Dutch/Finnish/Norwegian metal bands. Why? Because their accents are hot:p

Hey, hair metal is still metal! Perhaps just a stain on the sleeve of thrash/speed metal but, it still counts! I always thought David Wayne of Metal Church had a killer vocal style!!!
Oh crap, totally forgot about Phil Anselmo of Pantera (who basically stole his style from Kyle Thomas of Exhorder but that's another story for another day!!!) & Dax Riggs of Acid Bath!!!

mm phil can sing surprisingly well. but he also gets my vote for being most "fucking metal", if you know what i mean :D

as for seb bach... while he can sing very well and powerfully (and is of course a great frontman), he doesn't quite have the metal power or aggression that others do. that's why my top choice is Barlow from Iced Earth - just the right mix of great voice, growl, aggression and emotiveness in his voice. i think chuck billy comes close to him actually, but i might be biased cos a) chuck fuckin' rules! and b) i love Testament :P

Robb Flynn from Machine Head.

Hmmmm. Interesting choice, yeah. He does have a pretty cool voice, even if he's not what you'd normally associate with "good" singing.

Layne Staley deserves a mention too, but I can already hear the "He's not metal!!!" chorus.

Gotta be Bruce Dickinson. What a talented bugger; he's also a qualified commercial airline pilot. Wouldn't it be fun to be on a plane piloted by him? I wonder does he burst into song: "today we'll be flying at an altitude of 35,000 feet", etc?

I'd be rather worried if the chorus from "Aces High" came blasting out, were I on that flight. I'm not sure if Tool can be classified as "Metal" but that Maynard is rather good.

I hate these "whos best" polls.

Do you mean "most talented", or "best natural vocal ability".

If theres a difference, then the answer has two choices.

If "best" means "best natural vocal abililty", then its clearly Ronnie James Dio.

If its "most talented", that includes showmanship, and Frontman skills, and no one beats Ozzy for that.

Why no one has mention Rob Halford is blasphemy.

A very good choice, though I'm not sure it's possible to fit Faith No More comfortably into the 'metal' category. They had so many styles. Patton was a nutcase on stage at times, though I suppose you can argue that can be a good thing - better than watching somebody stand there and reel off the album.

Tarja Turjen (sp?) from Nightwish. I don't particularly like most metal, but if I can actually UNDERSTAND people, like Nightwish, then I will listen to it. Tarja's voice is just like, whoa man.

She has a fantastic voice. I don't normally like the 'operatic' style, but she does suit the music very well.
