If you're asking for the best band ever, you can only choose one. To have two 'best band ever's is a contradiction in terms.

Not that it matters, both your choices are dire.

Greatest British Band? I can't answer in that sense because I'm dead against "best" when it comes to music. Music is a creature of mood, and as such has no need for strict rankings. Certainly there can be broad categories of who does a better job at which style or in which musical situation, but one overall best is an asinine, ubercapitalist idea whose only justification and rationale is sales figures. In short, "best" can only be measured by money or popularity, which is also a function of money.

Not at all, to my way of thinking...

The reason I pick Sisters of Mercy as 'best'... is because of the consistency of the catalogue.

When you realise that the track you like LEAST about a Sisters album... would be the first single off of anyone else's album... or when you listen to a Sisters album, and you say, at the start of EVERY track... "oh, I like this one..." then you realise you are dealing with something special.

Okay -- I see. But you've proven my point because you've added some parameters: consistency across the entire CD/album, or the likeability of deep cuts from the overall CD/album.

If that's the angle, then my favorite British band is, without doubt or reservation, XTC. In my opinion, the weakest XTC track is easily better than most bands' hits.

The Sex Pistols

The Sex Pistols came about long before The Clash. The Pistols and The Damned were effectively the first British Punk Rock bands, forming in 1972 and late 1975, respectively.

The Pistols started as "The Strand" in '72 with Wally Nightingale, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and some other dude who I can't remember (but he OD'ed and they kicked him out). They rehearsed for a long time, and in '74, Steve had learned to play guitar well enough to finally kick Wally out (he was a good-for-nothing bum). A few months after, they got Glen on bass, and they rehearsed for about a year, and then the Lydon audition happened in Malcolm's shop in July of '75, and there they became the Sex Pistols.

And don't think it wasn't the same music: The music for "Did You No Wrong" and "Lazy Sod" (Seventeen) were written in '72 and '74, with some very bad, unrefined lyrics by Steve and Paul. John fixed them up, and the rest is history.

Anyway, I can't really say there's a "best" band for any era. It's all opinion, here.

Jeez, I said 'vaguely chronologically'. It's not as if I was going to go searching across the internet to find the origins of every band. I just put them down as they occurred to me (so there's probably some bands I should've put in there that I didn't), then re-arranged them a little bit to put them in some kind of order.

Certainly a best era though. You might disagree with my list, but you might also notice I've only put 2 (maybe 3) bands on there that formed after 1990 (I don't know when Eels formed). Compare that with 18 between 1960 and 1980, from a list of 25.

Hey, Monkey Wank would be a great name for a band. One of the all time greats, I reckon. The Libertines, Pete Doherty and Carl Barat won't be remembered in 10 years time, let alone almost 40 like, for example, the Beatles. Pete Doherty should be locked up. Neither of the Libs' albums were that good, their songs were average at best, and they sold the whole lot on the image of Doherty being a salt-of-the-earth working class guy come good.

No, he's British. He's averaged more than an album a year since 1980. Ok, not all of them are great, some are even downright crap, but he's had his fair share.

Speaking of more guilty pleasures, is Depeche Mode British? I ask because though it might seem obvious (when you hear the accent on albums like Some Great Reward: "Let's play / MAH-ster and suh-vunt..."), many bands fake accents to sound different. Lots of British bands sound "American" when they sing, and then you see them in an interview and they sound like they're from Lissen Grove or something.

I also forgot Tears For Fears. One of their songs, "Mad World", has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance -- I heard in in a CSI rerun and I heard a whiny female cover of it recently, too. Great song. Absolute mood music, they were. "I Believe" is absolutely haunting.

Simple Minds! Great ear candy there.

I understand about "Mad World" -- the TFF original does sound dated.

As for the Mode (interesting that you back-form Depeche Mode the way I was brought up back-forming Steely Dan: "The Dan".) -- I was in an "outcast clique" whose members constantly played Some Great Reward over and over again to the point where I never needed (or now want) to own the album. I wanted to fit in somewhere -- it was like the episode of South Park where Wendy breaks it off with Stan and he joins the Goths at his elementary school. A perfect skeweing of the milk-skinned and black-dye set. What a bunch of twats we were.

Oh, god, I cannot stand Depeche Mode. I used to think they were average, then one of my housemates got into them and played them to death.
One of the many famous bands to come from Essex. *nods*
Alisha's Attic...oh, yes.

I wasn't a fan of early Mode.... right up until.... about the release of "Violator". But... there's just no way NOT to love "Condemnation", "Walking in My Shoes" or "In Your Room".... in my opinion.

Alison Moyet also lived about two streets from me... she's an Essex girl, too.

(Oh, and Zoe went to my school... if you remember "Sunshine on a Rainy Day", or whatever it was called....)

Honestly, for a while, Essex was like the Bristol scene, but for the 80's.

Hey... there's nothing wrong with being a goth....

Okay - we don't disgaree that much then. Shopping at Hot Topic doesn't actually make you 'goth'... :)

I'm an unrepentent 'old school' Goth... velvet shirts, latex jeans, Bauhaus and the Sisters of Mercy, etc...

Real men wear eyeliner.

1960's: Genesis (Peter Gabriel era), The Who
1970's: Cat Stevens (for soft rock), Led Zeppelin
1980's: The Jam, Elvis Costello and the Attactions (OK, that's more late 70's)
1990's: NOTHING
Now: NOTHING

Why not? Just 'cause they don't have nice little hummable tunes?

Your opinions please

Old: Queen
New: Maximo Park
It must be, it would have to be the Beatles?

Even Queen members thought so:

"But, like their heroes The Beatles, Queen members explored different kinds of instrumental functions throughout their career." :D

why has nobody mentioned this great band yet??
Because they're good, but not the best British band ever? :p

What's with the Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight being mentioned? Piss right off. They're not even fit to be pissed on by some of the greats.

Anyway, I'm going to vote Radiohead.

So are we to take it that you find the Kinks' rock operas acceptable?

Rock operas aren't bad per se, The Who just failed at them.

"Arthur" is far greater than "Tommy"

Ray Davies was natural songwriter with a knack for narrative, Townsend was not. So where Arthur felt natural and flowing, Tommy and Quadrophenia sound forced and stilted.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm quite the fan... but their work was 'patchy'... and I've already said I think strength of catalogue is an important value for me, when deciding 'best-ness'.

The Who. And they started the rock opera, so cut them some slack. Quadrophenia is batter than arthur anyway.

Ah, yes, but "Tommy" is far greater than "Percy", I'm sure you'll agree.

Personally I consider 'arthur' to be a concept album, rather than a rock opera, essentially on the basis that it contains no narrative, but I guess that is up for debate.

I say Gorillaz.

Now... what's not to like about a completely mis-matched crew of 4 people (1 pretty boy, 1 hip-hop ******, 1 Satanist, and 1 strange Japanese super-kid) that don't exist?

Considering now the technology has advanced so much that they can perform live.

old as in not new and new as in not old

eg. Queen-old-70s-80sSurely that should be 60s-00s?'70s was correct. Brian May and Roger Taylor were certainly in a band in the '60s, but that comprised Tim Staffell, not Freddie Mercury or John Deacon, and was called Smile. It was in 1970 when Staffell left and they hooked up with Mercury and a geezer called Grose, then they began calling themselves Queen, and it was still later when Grose left and Deacon joined to give us the foursome we all know as Queen.

As for the '00s, the most recent tour only involved the original two members. They were still able to call themselves Queen, though, so that could count. At any rate, they still produced their own original music into the '90s.

Take a guess at what my favourite British band is...
