Those four kids should all be in prison. There is no excuse for something like this and the entire lot should be expelled. I really cannot find any sympathy for assholes who chase someone down in school, assault them in front of dozens of people and throw feces at them! They better at least be expelled, if 8 years olds are expelled for touching another 8 year olds butt or a 12 year old for bringing a butter knife with his lunch, then violent assualts deserve expulsion. Besides flinging human waste at someone is a crime in of itself on top of the beating. Perhaps at least threatning them with prison will show other students at that school that they are SERIOUS about the problems there.

a. How did they even GET the feces at school? I really hope that they did not pack them with their books.

Quite the contrary. This school seems to be an urban school, where security of faculty and staff, and maybe the students, is one of the top priorities. Personally, my school is quite lax with security, seeing how it is a private Christian Brother's school. Things like these don't usually happen in every school in the US, so don't get any wrong ideas.

I once risked my job and cost my employer over a thousand dollars because I offended a customer by pointing out that his yard, where I was working, was essentially an open sewer because he was too lazy to clean up after his dog. I didn't enjoy having to clean dog poo off of my boots and tools.

I went to a school with just over 1,000 pupils (all boys), right across the social divide from rich to poor, and with both Catholic and Protestant pupils, and it would be reasonable to expect some tension every now and then in a school like that in Belfast city centre...but I recall less than 10 "violent" incidents (outside of a playground game of rugby) in the 7 years I went.

I'll agree that the gang of kids was inappropriately sized and should be discouraged.

But in my opinion, a certain amount of violence in schools should not only be expected, it is a healthy thing. Human beings are violent. It would be nice if we could evolve beyond that, but w haven't. As much as we'd like to pretend that a few of us have, even they are pulling the wool over their own eyes. We are beasts. Semi-civilized beasts with baseball caps and semi-automatic weapons.

These kids are going to be subjected to a world beyond school and I, for one, want my child able to deal with the reality that people can be violent and they can be violent for little or no reason at all. At least school is a more controlled environment. He could be on the streets of Compton. *shudder*

By no means am I suggesting that these attacks be encouraged or unpunished. But criminalizing every violent school encounter is only going to make instances of violence more rare AND more intense.

Personally, I prefer shootings. The Columbine kids had the nicety to off them selves, thus already administering the ultimate punishment and saving us the effort of apologists.
And the problem here isn't the beating, the problem is the numbers. 10 to 1 isn't a "beating", it isn't "assault" it is "mob violence." Now, I don't think that prison is the answer either, I'm in favor of simply dragging the assailants out and shooting them like the animals they want to be.
There were even fewer school shootings in the days when "criminals" had their heads stuck on pikes outside the city gates, and at least that system has a sense of justice to it.

I agree though, 10 to 1 is just plain wrong. I'm certainly not trying to excuse their behavior. I'm merely trying to point out that:

A) It's better to learn about violence in a school than elsewhere and...

B) Beatings amuse me. :)
