I have now seen the epitome of stupid products

First off, I don't understand how these are legal in the US. I'd think they'd cause too much of a distraction for other drivers. Second off, the price is hideous. Where's the guy from "Unpimp My Ride" when you need him?

Those are great! I'm totally going to buy an old 1980'd Honda Civic and put those on it. Just what I've always wanted, gaudy rims that cost more than the car.

not dangerous. tho wanna see what happens after a couple of scrapes along the curb...

what's dangerous is when you got people who jack up their cars/trucks and don't readjust their headlights so it ends up shining right through your rear view window.... straight into your rear mirrors.

This kind? (http://www.reelcars.net/images/1970-80/13.jpg)

Yeah, thats the kind I drive, the only truck worth driving. Looks just like the one in the pic too, although without all the rust. Although it is in need of some major cleaning on the inside. Went to start it up this morning (worked like a charm) after having not used it for over a year, and the steering wheel had several different kinds of moss on it, and the seat had several kinds of mold. I'm not even gonna try to guess what was growing on the door.

You poor, poor little man; you have no idea do you? The world is filled with idiots, and idiots have access to money, therefore, these rims will be disturbingly common. Maybe I can arrange a horde of outraged citizens to roam the city streets, stealing those things whereever they may be found.

Actually, I think this is a huge marketing coups.

Imagine you want to sell drugs. Today, you have 30g Horse. You light up your wheels to display a bucking bronco. Instant brand recognition.

Add a submachine gun and a roll of bills and you are G'd up.

How can you 'waste' technology? Besides, why is it a stupid idea? If you think that anything is stupid simply because it serves no quantifiable purpose, then you'd have to get rid of art, literature, television, this forum...

Luckily no one will pay for such things.
I betcha they will. :p

That's actually kinda cool. Not that I would ever buy them no matter how much they cost, they'd look damn silly on vintage cars and I don't like modern ones. Even if I was into modern rides and 'DUB' pimping, I don't think I'd get them. I don't think it looks good, per se, but it is kind of neat.

The cost is almost a neccisity. First of all, they put up graphic images on a spining wheel. I got a three hundred dollar minimum to get a screen to do that in my hand, and thats all the thing has to do...

Second, crap like this is as much about look as exclusivity. The newest mod is only cool until the posers can get one. If they sell a ton of them right off the bat they lose thier 'cool' factor really quick. (Yes, I know, you don't think they're cool. They aren't trying to impress you, so it doesn't matter). The price protects thier exclusivity so you know when the person rolls up with them (you notice one of the pre-programed images was a dollar sign) you know they got it goin' on.

Is it conspicious consumption? You betcha. Is it any less garish than mom picking up the kids in an H2? meh...

Looking a tthe sizes available i think they are for 4x4s only, but you have to ask, how one arth do you run your car's electrical system into the wheels? (i assume in much the same way as you get your neons working), not only that but you need a PC inside your car to control the bloody things unless you plug in a USB cable at home, program it and then disconnect...

Getting ground to the wheels should be pretty easy. The problem would be the positive connection.

I watched the video of them 'in motion,' I don't know if it's the fit of the actual wheel or a side effect of the imaging, but it makes the wheels seem like they are not part of the truck, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the design but rather looks like it's seperated out. This is one of the things that I don't like about the current trend in customization. It's not universal, some people are really good about making the car 'fit' together, but I'm seeing a lot of cars that are misfitted together, each part too large or too small with no flow into the rest of the automobile. Buying mods with no inclination as to how they interact with the rest of the car. Like throwing a bunch of clip art on a page and putting a frame on it.

So many logos-Coca Cola, Playboy, Nike Air...

If you are distracted by these wheels, you should not be driving. As far as I know, when you drive you should be looking at the road ahead for possible hazards, not drooling over or getting annoyed with someone else's preoccupation with chrome.

Think, though, of the possibilities.... Coca-Cola could pay you to have ads for their products on your wheels... would make the rims pay for themselves. :D

Ever see those Car Wraps (http://www.leaseguide.com/articles/freecar.htm)? (I linked a consumer article about it instead of a company doing it) It was a big push 'round here then I haven't heard about it for a while. I hardly ever see a car that actually has it.

So, you're saying that when driving, you never get distracted? I'm not saying I would be distracted by these rims, but the possibility exists. IIRC, in CT underglow lighting is illegal for a similar reason.

I like how it calls them a huge leap forward in the evolution of the wheel. To my knowledge the wheel hasn't really ever evolved. It's always been round... it was never another shape. It didn't start out as oval then someone thought 'hey, these would work so much better if they were more... round'.

Even if I DID think something like that was a good idea (which I don't), you wouldn't catch me paying that much for them in this lifetime, or any other.

Seriously... some people are way too obsessed about a chunk of metal that gets them from A to B. If people invested as much time in their interpersonal relationships as they did with their cars, I bet marital success would be better. :p
