What China thinks of the West!

Demented Hamsters

Or more exactly, the Chinese.
The China Daily is the biggest, most widely read newspaper in China. Reading through the forums gives one a good indication of popular opinion towards the West. Most of them are so ludicrous, they're downright funny.

However, as the media is so closely and carefully controlled by the government, one could easily argue that these opinions reflect Govt opinion. Which makes these scary, not funny.
If you post any criticism of China, it's deleted immediately. However, anything is perfectly ok, as you'll soon find out if you keep reading.

Here's a select few from the China Daily forums:
http://bbs.chinadaily.com.cn/index.php
America no longer a superpower never mind a hyper power.
It can't even control a defenceless Iraq.
It is clear that the Anglo-nations are gangster states. They are the world's most prolific gun runners, drug pushers, slave traders, loan sharks, genocidal murderers, intimidators and fraudsters.
These gangsters can only compete through corrupt means, it's all they know.
But as with everything they do, they're very bad at it. If they had talent, they'd be able to make an honest living. Their policies are further handicapped by their corruption such as the war profiteering.
But i think Chinese doing it (sex) as artists, while American pretty much doing it as animals.
I am afraid the U.S. is not as good as we imagine.
These are my opinions upon America:
1.People cannot stay out at night somewhere, or else they will get themselves killed or raped without knowing who do this to them.
2.Drug trades are everywhere, I've seen these scenes time and again in movies.A sweet car stopping at the road side, a young man sticked his head out of the car window and said to the man: I want some bhang.
3.People are addicted to sex. They've made a lot new innovations which make them look more like annimals.
Their legal system is the world's most warped and corrupt which is why the Anglos are constantly bombarded with the propaganda that theirs is the best in the world (ditto their military, their NHS, their schools etc. etc.). If they're so good why do the Anglos have to lie constantly?
Whereas Japan has cram schools so their kids can make the grades, the failed UK education system, the world's worst, gives diplomas in Self Awareness, gives Woodwork three times the weighting of Mathematics, offers diplomas in Wheel Clamping and degrees in Beach Management, Football and Golf!!!! The Anglo species is the alone in not being able to master the English language. Instead, because it is the world's most confused crap, they claim it is a "living language". Any of the Anglo-Amerikan posts on this forum are indicative of a slug-like brain.
Their democracy is an inherently corrupt sham and even at best descends into mob-rule.
Their constant war-mongering and thievery is a natural progression from their crud exports. They are despised by all who know them. The French know them best and ridicule their primitive attempts to perform the most basic task of cooking, calling them "ros bif". The Germans call them "locusts", the Spanish call them "Churchill Cockroaches".
Truly, the Anglos are THE MOST UNCIVILISED SPECIES IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE.
Is all the white men false that created the world into chaos. They greedy and like to take something that don't belong to them. And that why many place in the world today turning into hell.
Because they white men and his evil mind...................
If you don't kill them they kill you
Chaiman Mao had tought us that white men are greedy and we must not be nice to them.
We have to kill them before they kill us.
To kill or to be kill and we have to choose one of this answer.
White men don't believe in morality, they just believe that might make right so we have to deal with them the same way.
The same way as the Japanese believe. If you weak they will walking on your face but if you strong they will respect you.
Thanks your advice captain. If they don't drink me they won't have a vitamin C. Sound good but how about drink my urine and eat my stool and that contain alot of vitamin c and b.
Chinese people and the people of the world we must rebellion against white men
Australian Aborigines...."ATE" the Chinese in far Nothern Queensland and you say they "DENY" it...well of course they do...WHITE/BLACK people will deny anything that shuts off the money from FAKED History.
Third, the rise of China gave these racist Anglos an excuse to strike preemptively, since they are still cherishing this deep-seated fear of having to share the good life and limited resources with hordes of non-whites led by the Chinese,
ANTI-DEVIL
The evil root of all instability in the world today.
Is the BLACK AGENDA of the Western foreigners and the white superiority complex and evil that they foist onto the Chinese at every chance they get.
Their intention to subvert and then to ultimately split dear China so that China may be controlled by them, just as they intended 200 and 300 and 400 years ago.
The devils and the Hanjian will never stop until the Chinese are again the slaves of the western white people.
It is so very obvious.
We must continue to fight against these devils on a day by day asis.
The White Superiority Complexed people, constantly try to dig holes under China and cause her to become less stable and to become more western and distorted in all her thoughts.
They are the root of all instabillity in China.
It's interesting to note that Tony Blair is actually not English, but Scottish. It's funny how people sometimes forsake their true identity and exchange it for whiteness, turning into total scumbags in the process.
However, I still believe in the existence of "whiteness" in the context of certain Western societies, particularly the "Anglo" societies, and I think of it as referring to people who willingly betray their own cultural origins and join the WASP ruling class.
White man always want to control the other race, they think that they superior but they not, infact they are most inferior, because the main reason they have too much genetic diseases which uncureable.
Like the people who gave us "Ben Hur" and "Ten Commandments" in the Fifties, the producers of "Lord of the Rings" are trying to instill a certain politicized image of war in the subconscious mind of the world's people. In this scenario, an aggressive maneuver is cloaked in the image of a defensive war waged by great white underdogs.
And the plot of the movies also portrays the final victors as underdogs counter-attacking an evil enemy. So the world's audience is led to think of the white guys in the plot as good defenders of freedom and not aggressors like they are in real life, and that their enemies are but clueless, cumbersome dragons and evil goblins.
Pay attention to the color of the goblin's skin and facial features.
They are unmistakably Asian. The hero is a good and handsome white guy, and this is the image they want to sell to the world's audience. It's got the stamp of approval by the CIA all over it. The evidence is everywhere in the movie. Its aim is to soften up the rest of the world before the 'great whites' move in with their 'counter-attack' much like Hitler 'counter-attacked' Poland at 4:45 a.m. on September 1, 1939.
If the goblin's role has to be played by a real person, it would have been an Asian. But then it would smack of racial profiling and stereotyping. Such a maneuver might backfire.
This was a thread from an American:
Is America the enemy of China?
Does the Chinese government indeed consider the United States of America their enemy? Is the fact that we agree in part to the "one China" policy and then in turn sell arms to Taiwan make us an enemy to China?
"But our captivation with China has not translated into a smooth and predictable relationship over the past few centuries. To us, China has been alternately open, then closed, and then reopened again. The result is that we Americans do not understand China very well--its ancient roots, its history, its people, its way of life, political structure, or place in today's world. Nor do the Chinese understand us. To them, the West has seemed imperialistic and exploitive, caught up with colonial designs on their territory and disrespectful of China as a great nation.
But it is imperative--even urgent--that we learn to understand each other better. I believe the U.S.-China relationship is one of the most important--perhaps the most important--of all the bilateral strategic relationships in the world today and that we have reached a defining moment in that relationship."
Can America turn their backs on the Taiwanese people who share our ideal of Freedom & Democracy?
Will America "Sell out” or will China advance democratically enough to make it compatible with
Taiwan? If America today said, "we will no longer support Taiwan and will not sell them weapons or come
to their aid in a time of war"....would China then be our friend?

This was the first reply:
Not America...but the American Military/Industrial Complex sure is.
Even in the piece you posted - (where is it from by the way, knowing where such crap comes from could go a long way in clearing up the impetus for such pompous crap) - is filled with the exact aspects of the America system that is most repugnant while at the same time being so self-serving via the American government rhetoric it contains.
Hey, here's a news flash that could be helpful...what passes for the American government (the current one especially) is duplicitous in the extreme. "It" is also contradictory, hypocritical, cynical, intrusive, pompous, corrupt in all ways, and just your basic curse on the current generation of humankind.
The American Military/Industrial Complex is the enemy of the entire world - no need to just try and pick on China.
Now the people that make up the country are a different story; and as the country is the people and not the government then your trying to drive a wedge between the people of the two countries by insinuating that the people of the two countries are enemies is nasty in the extreme.
Then again, since you didn't write the piece, the blame for the pompous, condescending insults it contains perhaps falls more on the author.
But see? Right there is contained a compliment. At least you show perseverance in your constant attempts to insult China and that is an endearing aspect of many American's...they persevere - even when they are woefully wrong mind you, but they do persevere. Some Americans - and many people from other countries around the world - are of course "persevered to death" by the American Military/Industrial Complex but that still doesn't take away from that laudable part of the people's "nature."

What's important to keep in mind is that these opinions are from well educated (and thus well-off) Chinese, shown by the fact they know english. Which also means they are able to get their information from english sources So the opinions of the teeming masses of poorly educated, who rely solely on govt media are probably much much worse.

As with any group there is always a small fringe element that can give the majority a bad name, however it would be disturbing if a majority of Chinese felt that way about all non-Chinese. Of course it's their right to have their own opinions, just as it is my right to continue to ignore them as I have done for the past 23 years. Truth be told I find it difficult to imagine that many Chinese people set aside time of each day to specifically hate non-Chinese, I imagine they're somewhat like us, if it doesn't affect you then ignore it or pay as little attention as possible.

Obviously only one side of the story remains at all. We can't possibly know what all of the people think because those who dissagree don't have a chance to speak. Chinese government propoganda is widespread, and often the wealthiest people in the nation are the most pro-government.

I would expect that public sentiment is much less anti-America.

But it's not. Sure most of the things in the OP are ridiculous, but public opinion in China is quite anti-America. Probably the only country they hate more is Japan. I'm only speaking on a government level, of course, because culturally, the Chinese worship the Americans.

And corrections, often the wealthiest people in the nation are IN the government. They're all involved somehow, even if they claim to be businessmen or something like that.

I have been to mainland China and through discussions with people that could speak english. I have in my opinion figured that most Chinese do not know what the real world is all about. They are one of the most backward people as far as world events and correct interpetations of what happens in the world. It is very stunning to talk with alot of Chinese. Does that mean they are stupid? By no means at all. They are just very naive to what goes on outside of China. I guess freedom of press does help....

How Do You Know You Live in a Police State

When the Ministry of Truth tells you you live in "the land of the free".

When the only options are Republican or Republican Lite and the only difference is what they say not what they do.

When the "Free Speech Zone" is a metal cage where journalists are not allowed to go.

When "enemies of the state" can be incarcerated indefinitely without trial, charges or access to lawyers or the outside world in a legal black hole and previously you've had witch hunts which the Supreme Court has thrown out as unconsitutional.

When newscasters get sacked for criticising the Prezeedent.

When your stupid prezeedent has a stupid smirk on his stupid face whilst he tells you they "hate us for our freedoms".

When your prezeedent is stupid and unable to cope with words such as "subli-minimal", "misunderestimate" or "abu g . . . abu gehe . . ." and thinks the leader of Pakistan is "erm no".

When the FCC fines anyone who says anything which might be controversial or the brief exposure of Janet Jacksons breast and Martha Stewart is jailed for defending herself in court..

When officials, facing questioning complain that you're impuning their integrity.

When they use electronic terminals with no paper trail to do nothing more complicated than count votes.

When the most unpopular president in history gets the biggest vote in history.

When the newly elected president has to break with tradition in walking the last 100 yards to the Whitehouse because his car is being pelted with eggs.

When an Australian journalists in visiting the US is turned away once she states she's a journalist in the US to interview Olivia Newton John even though she visits the US for her holidays.

When you're spreading freedom and democracy to nations which are fighting tooth and nail to shove your freedom and democracy "where the sun don't shine".

When you get arrested for wearing a t-shirt with "Give Peace a Chance" on one side and "eace on Earth" on the other.

When they get you to pledge allegiance to a unifying symbol such as a flag at an age when you would have no idea what you're doing such as happened in the Hitler Youth League.

When they use anthrax attacks as an excuse for imposing ID cards but the anthrax is from government laboratories and is only sent to members in the opposition party.

When a Jew in a gym saying he disapproves of Israel, gets a visit from the FBI the next day.

When senators from the opposition party die in plane crashes just before the elections.

Sounds more like China to me. Oh the irony.

I'd like a link to these forums...

Well, although I admit it is likely that government propeganda is everywhere, dont' think that western nations are unbiased and free. Watch CNNs coverage of the Iraq war vs CBCs, and BBCs...big difference. Don't doubt, western media isn't perfect or representative either. Its funny, all this communications technology, and the media seems less trustworthy and accurate then ever...

As for the comment about western justice systems, in China they blow your brains-out for being suspected of Jaywalking, then bill your family for the bullet. (I perhaps exaggerate the jaywalking, but they really do bill your family for the bullet!)

Names are translated phonetically into Chinese, so Bush in Chinese would still sound like Bush. This person might be trying to pass that off as a derogatory comment, or he might be just plain dumb.

I have a dilemma. Maybe NS Generalites can help me here.

By ethnicity, I am a second generation overseas Chinese. I have been educated in the West. Politically I am loyal only to my Nation and not to China. My country has strong economic and historical links with China, but politically there is implicit mistrust, since communists insurgents (read terrorists) nearly destroyed my country.

As a kid I have been exposed to cultural influences from both East and West. At the time, China was closed to the outside world, so Chinese culture was propagated by Hong Kong and Taiwan. Their movies, songs and books influenced me as much as movies, songs and books from US and Europe. I thought that is what Chinese culture meant for me.

When China opened up in the late '90s, I experience a severe culture shock. Chinese nationals started to enter the employment market all over the world, I can face to face with them. The shock is mutual. We cannot be more different! With the export of mainland Chinese culture, I am also struck at how little affinity I have for it. I have access to both Taiwanese and mainland Chinese media and it is shocking how different their worldviews are.

The older generation of Chinese immigrants are still loyal to China, I think. So my dilemma is - if I appear to hate China, I will look like a traitor to them. But try as I might, I cannot like them. They are competing for jobs in my very own country.

Anyway to respond to this thread - I think that Chinese nationals do believe that they are superior to everyone, except the Americans in some respects. In my conversations with them, they consider Americans to be imperialist, Japan to be pure evil, of course, and Europe to be divided and decrepit. They don't think much of anyone else.

The anti-American attitudes of the chinese aren't really surprising. I have known some people from Taiwan and they seem sort of asian supremacist and stuff like that. Also, it is interesting to note that many chinese people do not even know how STDs are spread.

"Sixty percent of young people in China think you can get HIV by sharing chopsticks with someone," lamented Ken Legins, head of
UNICEF's HIV/AIDS program in the country.
Link (http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060421/sc_nm/life_china_sex_dc;_ylt=AhT7qB2CVV_5Ps3NJvimLG_VJRIF;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--)
That reminds me about something Emma mentioned to me (see my thread about my Tibet trip if you're interested in who Emma is). She said they'd been told in China that most western men have HIV or AIDS, as a way of scaring Chinese girls into not having sex with westerners.

Incidently, the average age for losing one's virginity in China is like 24 for women and 23 for men.

Also, just out of interest (and connected to the above stat), relating to the "Chinese are artists, Westerners are animals" when it comes to sex, Emma (and the other 3 Chinese women I've had sex with) have all complimented me voraciously on my sexual adeptness. This, I suspect, is not because I'm a modern day Don Juan or Cassonova (sadly), but more because the Chinese men they've been with are so completely lacking in sexual experience or knowledge.
Makes me look better in comparison.
Oh the irony.

Now that must be some horrible art if it is so unsatisfying. I mean, I think they are just jealous because we do it BETTER!!:p

Actually, if memory serves me correctly, the Chinese in ancient times were a whole lot more experimentive about sex than anybody else. One of the reasons I can think of was the whole thing regarding concubines. I won't say it's factually correct since I have no hard data to support this, but the concept of concubines was allowable to those who could afford it (typically the very rich and the nobility). Given that was the case, sexual experimentation could have been quite high.

After all, in the Imperial times, the Chinese Emperors of yore had concubines numbering in the thousands and how far they got in the rear palace was often dictated by how hooked you could get the Emperor. The really good ones (along with some backstabbing, literal in some cases), even managed to get named Dowagers and their sons becoming heirs to the throne.

And whatever happened in the court, usually fashion and various 'arts', usually trickled down to the rest of the nation.

So I'd say that the Chinese people aren't exactly that sexually ignorant. At least regarding the practice of it.

There's over 300 crimes for which you can get the death penalty for in China. And they have something like a 99% conviction rate.

as for jaywalking...close:
In Tibet, I saw signs showing a man being beaten by a policeman with his gun and baton. The Tibetan guide told us that it was warning people not to steal electricity and up til recently (like within the last decade), the police were allowed to execute offenders on the spot.

True, but since Mao, all that was ignored/censured/destroyed and then when the population started growing too much, there was a big clampdown on all things sexual. So up until recently, most have been very ignorant of sex.
A western man back in the 90s was barred from entering China because he had a vibrator in his luggage - it was viewed as 'polluting Chinese culture'. Now there's sex shops in all the major cities, so it is improving again (if you can call a sex shop an improvement!).

Out of interest, in China to get married you need to be 22 for men, 20 for women. They need to get a medical ceritificate to show you have no STDs, and sit through a sex ed presentation (the first one some might see). They also need to get permission from their work unit to be allowed to marry.
If you marry a foreigner and still at university, you are immediately expelled. Some unis even go so far as demand the chinese person pay for their full tuition for the course completed as well as extra compensation for 'lost services', refusing to release the necessary documents until they do. The local civil affairs office may also arbitrary raise the age for marriage for one or both parties.

The question is, what if you DID have an STD? Huh? Then what?

I don' know about the marrying a foreigner thing. That sounds very "early nineties".

On another note. Remeber the one child thing? Well guess what? You can have as many kids as you want. The conscequences of having more than one child are:

1. Fired from work, but this is providing you're working for the government, which not a lot of people seem to do anymore, especially the rich.
2. A fine, which if you're rich enough to have two kids, you'd easily be able to afford.
3. Unless you're a "farmer", in which case you're allowed to have more than one child, without the above punishments. China is currently about 70% rural.

Thus, in 3 generations, 95% of chinese people are going to be either uneducated rednecks or really rich. Both are easy to control by an oppressive government.

Very true. I'm afraid I'm coming across as a bit of a xenophobe towards China as of late, but really I just despise the Chinese govt, not only because of it's totalitarianism but because I've had a chance to personally see how its control over the media and education has fucked up the Chinese populace. Which worries and scares me a bit. US for all it's problems at least is open enough and educated enough to be semi-benevolent. China hasn't got that.

Although some people feel that I am "lucky" to understand both cultures, sometimes I cannot help but envy monolingual, monocultural people. They can spout one-sided views with impunity, without consideration for the "other side". I am both "my side" and the "other side". The intellectual pain involved in this balancing act, I think is what few can understand.

What am I truely lucky about is that I have cable TV access to both CCTV4 (PROC) and Chong Tian Channel (ROC).

On one side there are regular programs proclaiming the landscape beauty and history of glorious China. On the other you have programs discussing celebrity gossip and sex tips.

On one side there is a talk show about the unity of China, and how the citizens of Taiwan really yearn for reunification, if not for their evil DPP government. On the other you have a program detailing the possible places the mainland will strike in case of war, the invasion speed, and how the government will respond.

I am a Chinese-American. Hell, I was born in Hong Kong. Sure, some people might be a bit racist aganist foreigners, but some people exist in every country. Most people may be a bit apprehensive (not totally unjustified, considering all of the countries "visiting" China in the last 200 years screwed her over one time or another), they do not harbor hostile feelings towards them. This is especially true in the more affluent regions, such as Shenzhen, Hongkong, and Shanghai.

The only people that Chinese may really have hatred towards is Japanese (read "The Rape of Nanking"), but even that is slowly dying out, as it is in Korea. Many people nowadays weren't born before WWII, and haven't experienced Japanese occupation.

What's important to keep in mind is that these opinions are from well educated (and thus well-off) Chinese, shown by the fact they know english. Which also means they are able to get their information from english sources So the opinions of the teeming masses of poorly educated, who rely solely on govt media are probably much much worse.

Well, I should certainly hope that most Chinese and Koreans weren't born before 1945. If they were, I would weep for the extinction of their peoples.

More to the point, though, the book "The Rape of Nanking" is considered a flaming pile of bollocks among many professors of East Asian history (all of them that I've met, as a matter of fact). They told me why once, but I'm afraid that I don't remember it. I might have written it down, but I'm too lazy to look (two years worth of notes on history are not fun to dig through).

EDIT: That's not to say that it didn't happen. Just that it wasn't as bad as it was portrayed in "The Rape of Nanking".

Stop being a drama queen. :p
You forgot to mention you only show the bad ones.

I spoke to a Pakistani who had lived in Pakistan, Germany, Holland and the United States. He said in Pakistan he faced racism from other tribes and other factions of his religion. In Germany & Holland he faced racism for being Muslim- he was outwardly not allowed in some private businesses. In the United States he has faced the least amount of racism out of all the countries he's been in, as people are generally pretty accepting. The people in the United States may be self-centered, and overly proud of their accomplishment but they are also good christians and born and bred in the goodness of TOLERANCE.

Americans are racist, but not as racist as the average Chinese, by far.

This is freaking stupid. The U.S. has a freer speaking environment than pretty much any other country.

America is the most open mind in the earth ..for example---sex!!!!
sex is my favor!!! i think human need sex. in china the the people talk about sex. they will feel shy..but iam not . and IF you were US.the people enjoy sex.. sex is an art . that's the difference between CHI AND US.

They are talking in a foriegn language for fun and practice.. You do realise that the majority of the people on that webpage are well educated and wealthy... I guarantee you that they are not blinded by any censorship.Which is strange, because none of the Chinese students I've met at my university are like that.

This is not really what the Chinese think, but rather what the Chinese *government* thinks. All newspapers and other media are very strictly controlled by the government and thus can only write what the government wants them to.
Same goes for any forums, if anyone posts something they don't like, it gets immediately deleted, and if it was bad enough, the poster will be locked up for a few years.
There is *no* freedom of speech in China.

So america does not have a monopoly on stupidity. oh wait, In china the government will lock you up if your opinions arent the same as the governments.

Uh...it's not their forum. If you post something the forum-owner doesn't like, he can exercise his private property rights to delete it, just like Max can use that to delete anything he doesn't like on Nationstates.

The best analogy is this:

Noone in China cares if you grumble about the Government a bit. They can't afford to monitor their citizens that much, it's impossible.

The Government get's pissed if you turn into a Chinese Cindy Sheehan.

Doesn't change the fact that Japan massacred 15+ million people in Asia in WWII...

You know, I just know that somebody in China is making a topic called "What America thinks of the rest of the world.", and linking to Stormfront. :D I just have that uncanny feeling...

*giggles*
Funny...
*turning serious*

But why should either the US or the PRC give an F what the other side thinks?
Surely the only thing that matters is what the other side does.

You have to get China at least a bit of credit. They're making a lot of improvement. I mean, compare the differences between the PRC and the DPRK. They're massive!

I am Chinese myself, and I've been to China a good majority of my life. I have to be honest, alot of them do think like that.
