I played for years. From Mirage Right up though the Odyssey set but after that it kinda became lackluster to me.
But for old times sake I'd love to join a community

Basically the exact situation I was in, although I started with the Fourth edition.

I didn't like that they kept adding new rules and features to the cards. One or two variations (I liked Flanking, for one) were ok, but it seemed like they were throwing in all these new abilities just because they could. It really ruined the game, at least for me.

Fallen empires pwn nubs. lol. I just like the cards for the amazing storyline. My decks are mainly mercadian masques-apocalypse. I will post my primary deck on this thread later, but its 1:40 and I am too tired to do that right now.

Same. Once mirrodan came out, it seemed like everyone started making cookie-cutter affinity decks they found online. I stopped going to Friday Night Magic after Dark Steel.

The most pointless addition ever was banding...It doesn't need banding to "combo block".
Cycling however was greeat in sped/counter spell blue decks.

Dude, I HATED Affinity. That almost ruined it for me but I stuck it out and since then, there hasn't really been an allmighty net deck. I just hope it stays that way.

Banding was around since the beginning, so it wasn't an addition.

Cycling was a little annoying, but I could deal with it.

But seriously, they went to far. I knew things were going downhill once they started adding things like Shadow, Phasing, and Buyback.

Sad, really...

Whats that new series they are coming out with that is supposed to bring back the Ice Age feel? Also I hate what they did to the cards starting with 8th. The first thought that entered my head when I opened up my first 8th edition pack was "this better be temporary"

I hate the "editions" sets because they print the cards with a white border. ::Shudders:: So horrible. >.< But yeah. The art seems to be improving through the sets though. The Kamigawa art awe awesome. They are also releasing a Standard legal Third set to Ice Age in June I think. Called Cold Snap.

Equipment is basically the same as enchant creature, just stays on the field once the creature is sacked. Pretty silly to me.

To me, the whole idea of adding all those abilities was to cater to the collector, not the player.

The problem is, all to often the player is just a casual gamer, who just wants to have fun. That is the person who the game should be geared towards. Collectors only care about complete sets, card conditions and price lists.

Sure, you can be a player AND a collector, but nobody who actually liked the game would have ruined it by adding new rules noone liked.

When you gear a game to collectors, you run the risk of alienating the casual gamer, which Magic accomplished fantastically, as far as I can tell.

9th was also released, and I am not sure about 10th.Coming out soon. But right now, they have the Ravnica (and you start to wonder where the OP got his name :D) block out right now. Very multicolor. The final expansion is coming out in may, and they'll be bringing out what was meant to be an Ice Age expansion (well, it is an Ice Age expansion) called Coldsnap out afterwards.

I've been an extremely casual player and didn't have a deck of my own. Usually played in a group of friends. I'm fascinated by the guild concept they have in Ravnica though, and I only really started buying cards now.

A white angel/heal deck that took me years to build, with lots of trades involved.

Back in the day I did, and I still remember the rules; I had a bit of a falling out with the game after the release of Onslaught block and totally lost interest after Mirrodin.

Saga was insane; I remember the first days of it's release before they banned Tolarian Academy and the others in Type II Constructed...even afterwards it was still very powerful and well-balanced. Definitely some of the best and most creative times in the game.

And for those of you wondering: Yes, I had a Counter-Rebel deck, and it was good. I feel almost ashamed for building it...however, the Rishadan ports and Lin Sivvis fetched a nice trade or two after I dismantled it.

The Counter-Rebel was probably the second most annoying combo deck ever next to the Voltaic Key, Mishra's Helix, and I believe it was the Carnevorous Dragon, it came in 2nd in worlds in 98 I think or 99

I played from Unlimited to Alliance.
I stopped when it became too commercial and when they added inane abilities and banned things like banding for no good reason other that "it's too complicated to understand".

Back in those days, there wasn't a card saying "you win the game" or "you cannot die unless..." (well, except for Ali from Cairo, but he was a creature).

Back in those days, you still used creature in your deck. Now it's all combos and the best deck have no creatures whatsoever.

Ah, I still remember the glory days of Kobolds! Back then, a Serra Angel was a good creature. We had mox and double-land and icy manipulators (and not the puny art-awful one of ice age, but the 25$ unlimited one.)

Those were the days when you were lucky to have two expansion in the same year and not one every month.

I always thought the sliver decks were annoying as hell. One of my friends managed to build a green elf deck that was amazingly fast. By then end of the second turn he would have about 8 elfs out in play, it was unreal.

The only problem I have with my white angel/heal deck is I can never seem to get enough mana out to bring on the good creatures, I always get railed because the mana likes to settle into the middle of the deck.

I'm not sure how recently you've checked top decks, but PT Honolulu was won with Heezy street which is similar to Zoo, which also did quite well. So to say the combo decks are pwning all in the tourney scene isn't quite accurate. Though if you were refering to Affinity, dragon/good, or a few of the other fairly recently successful archtypes, then yeh combos have done well for themselves.

Anyways, i still play, though i didn't like much of kamigawa, except the art. Rav block is pretty interesting though. I only started playing seriously around planeshift.
