Basically it's a hybrid engine that uses compressed air rather than an electric motor to increase mileage by more than electric hybrids do. Its these kinds of breathroughs that give me a glimmer of hope that the impending energy crisis will not leave us in the stone age by the middle of the century.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Mar 29, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- In light of the nation's demand for improved fuel efficiency and less dependence on foreign oil, the Scuderi Group announced today that it will debut next week at the SAE World Congress in Detroit designs of its breakthrough air-hybrid technology, the world's most fuel efficient internal combustion engine. With three additional worldwide patents recently filed, the air-hybrid system doubles the fuel efficiency of today's conventional engines and reduces toxic emissions by up to 80 percent - all within a design that will make hybrid vehicles easier and far less expensive to build.
(The Scuderi Group will exhibit the engine's design and show video simulations of the Air-Hybrid Engine April 3-6 at the Cobo Center in Detroit. Booth No. 2561.)
Backed by the U.S. government and verified by a world renowned independent laboratory, the Scuderi Air-Hybrid Engine is adaptable to diesel and gasoline automobiles, commercial vehicles and any other applications powered by internal combustion engines.
"These technology enhancements, and the subsequent patents, come at an important time as we as a nation look to be more efficient in our use of petroleum products and while the automobile industry struggles to increase the value of their automobile products," said Sal Scuderi, president of The Scuderi Group. "Once these advancements are incorporated into our internal combustion engine, the industry will have available the fuel efficiency, power, and impact on the environment that consumers are looking for and at a cost that makes sense." .....

...
1 Potentially double vehicle mileage
2 Reduce toxic emissions by up to 80 percent
3 Be compatible with all alternative fuels, including natural gas, ethanol, and bio-diesel.
4 Be easy and cost effective to manufacture by utilizing the same components found in today's engines
By utilizing fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and the unique features of a split-cycle design, the Scuderi Technology improves how an engine converts chemical energy into mechanical energy. Unlike conventional engines, the Scuderi engine divides the four strokes of a standard engine (intake, compression, power, and exhaust) over a paired combination of one compression cylinder and one power cylinder. These two cylinders perform their respective functions once per crankshaft revolution, while conventional engines require two revolutions of the crankshaft to perform these same functions.
The Scuderi Technology can be applied to any piston engine from very small gasoline powered lawn mowers engines to very large diesel powered train engines. The technology is patented worldwide with six patents issued and several pending in over 45 countries. The Scuderi Group plans to license the technology to qualified engine manufacturers.

Whole story which is really just a press release...

Nice.

The water-powered engine is still much better. It compresses water and heats it to the point where it's hotter than gas. Too bad, though, as it probably won't be picked up by any auto manufacturers.

Eeehm - we already have *plenty* of alternative powersources available which could prevent that. We can also decrease the energy requirements of most household appliances - like refrigerators and washing machines - by 500% without concessions to quality. Cars can easily get 200% more efficient.

The problem is not the technology, it is the unwillingness of industry and public to have them implemented. Because *currently* alternative sources cost more per kwh than oil and gas do.

Does that work with salt water? Because fresh water is going to be quite the commodity without trying to replace gas with it. Although I suppose instead of refineries we could have desalinization plants.

Another problem with all those alternatives is that they rely on oil. Ethanol, for example, uses much more petroleum to grow, harvest and transport the material than you get from it once it's been rendered.
