Noo members and lack of humour

As something of a follow on to the thread about the unholy alliance of first posts and gun smilies, what is it with new, and relatively new, members and absolutely failing to be able to take a joke, detect sarcasm or assume that not everything said here is said in all deadly seriousness? Is it something about being new that dictates this? Or are we simply having a spate of humourless people joining?

It's incredibly difficult to tell when someone is being sacastic from text, especially as there are often people who really do feel that way. I think you just have to be here a little while to get an idea about people and where they're coming from, like everything in life.

I picked up most posters' sarcasm and jokes when I first arrived here, and my first post was a rather long and clearly-written.

I'm going with a spate of humorless/moronic posters joining as of late.

I think this type of forum tends to attract some angry young political thinkers who take themselves and life in general too seriously. On the bright side, it also attracts people like Lunatic Goofballs and Fiddlebottoms.

it takes a while to get the flavor of General... and to realize each posters posting habits.

so that's why alot of mistakes as well as taking things to seriously come up.

the problem is after the first 1000 posts and those people still can't tell humor/sarcasm from seriousness.

I think you've been here too long. :p

Well fair enough it's tricky to detect sarcasm, but there's some blindingly obviously sarcastic comments that have been made that have been completely missed by some of the newer guys here.

And not to mention there seem to be a large number of (dare I say it?) n00bs getting very angry for no reason. Flip off smilies and such.

Well, I've been on here most of the day as well, so I'm not going to comment.

D'you reckon there's some connection between your own post count and those you consider n00bs? Like, I would think someone with, say, <200 posts fairly n00bish (unless their join date is waaaay back) but then mines not even at 800 yet, and here we have people with higher counts who think 1000 to be n00bish  An interesting experiment perhaps...

Absolutely. It's totally relative.

Experience is always relative to the person. For example, a professional athlete that has been in his sport for like 6 years will view a kid who just got drafted as a 'noob'. The same way a college senior will look at a freshman the same way and you keep going down like that untill your actually at the bottom.

The current spate of stupid and hostile n00bs will pass. Some will leave, never to return, some will stay, figure out how the place works, and then start making useful contributions, and then some will become regulars and stay forever.

Although the gun smilies and the finger smiley are never good indicators.

though as for the OP, i agree with what Philosopy said... if you don't know a particular poster then it's very hard to distinguish between sarcasm/a joke and being serious.

It's a symptom of the "N00b virus." Other symptoms include ( but are not limited to ) inability to reason effectively, use of contextually inappropriate profanity, discussing issues which have already been beaten to death, inability to view signatures, excessive use of L33t Sp33k, frequent failure to quote posts to which they are making reference, and other serious and crippling symptoms.

Prescription: Long periods of reading without posting, paying attention to how older posters operate, reading the rules, and assiduous avoidance of smileys.

Alternative Prescription: Self-immolation. :D

Indeed. I have gotten used to it by now though, so usually it takes one heck of a noob to confuse me.

Yeah, but even with the blindingly obvious ones they still sometimes miss it.

On behalf of the n00bs, and following a lengthy meeting, I want to state how offended the n00bs are to be branded 'humourless' and unable to detect sarcasm. We feel this judgment to be sweeping and unjust and demand an unreserved apology from you 'oldies' or we'll strike.

we have a new form of sacasm, one so witty, so sharp, so subtle, so loud that the commander-in-charge of sacasm his blackness 'Edmund Blackadder' will be screaming from his grave in the trenches of france. aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh, the legacy is over, the blackadders are being usurped, by the n00bs on NS.

*cough* Please. Don't demean the genius that is Rowan Atkinson by reducing his entire acting career, and the devastating wit and irony that accompanied it hand-in-hand to a single series of Blackadder, fantastic though it was.
