Well, I went to the doctor today

I've been sick off and on for about a month. This morning, my throat was particularly hurting(though it has been giving me pain for weeks and weeks). So my mom set up a doctors appointment in the middle of the day.

The doctor is pretty sure I have mono. I guess its not the worst thing in the world, and he says after this long, I should be out of the acute phase. But I dunno... it just feels wierd. I only have limited experience with knowing people who had mono, and most of them were completely knocked out by it for a while. I've been really tired and sick for a while, but nothing I couldn't handle.

Not sure why I'm posting this. I feel pretty sick again right now, almost threw up a few minutes ago, and my throat still really hurts. I have homework, but I'm considering just putting it off till tomorrow, and trying to get a few extensions with the note the doctor gave me. I feel really tired, but its only 9pm, way early for me to go to bed... I dunno.

Its wierd. I've kissed a couple girls in the last month or so, but neither of them had or has mono, afaik and they know. I didn't give it to them, either, so its a bit strange. I guess I have a reason not to share cig's or drinks for a while, though, heh.

Mono is a nasty disease. i have a friend that was knocked out of school for a month because of it. I've heard, though, that the part about is being the "kissing disease" is actually just a myth.

It sucks, but you'll get over it. Remember, that which does not kill us only makes us stronger.

is mono the same as glandular fever? sometimes known as the kissing disease? i got that when i was a baby which is well unusual - had to go to hospital and everything.

I pity you, I had mono when I was 17.

Knocked me for a loop, put me out of commision for weeks, spent 5 days in the hospital (co-incidentally the same one I now work at). I lost 25 pounds, way too much for an already skinny kid. Teachers said I looked like a concentration camp victim when I went back to school.

Hope your case isn't as bad...

Unless it is a virus, in which case it stays in your system waiting to pop up later when something really important is going to happen and screw you over.

Which Glandular fever does; one of my flatmates is going through his second bout of Glandular fever at the minute. However, he's better this time than he was when he originally contracted it (over 2 years ago), because he can actually get out of bed now without hallucinating. It isn't that often that people get recurrences of Glandular Fever (I think it's only when your immune system is massively weakened by other factors) so it's nothing to really worry about; unless you're a hypochondriac, that is, in which case you'd probably be more worried about the slightly increased risk of Burkitt's Lymphoma. ¬_¬

Just to clarify for anyone confused by the American/British language divide.

Mono = Glandular fever.

Both are infections usually caused by EBV (as stated in the informative link posted above)

Different names, same disease.

As a fellow previous sufferer I agree, it sucks. Still most people get over it soon enough and have no further problems.

I've had it. It takes a while to get rid of. You'll survive.

Mono! Awesome. Do what I did ... give it to everybody .... *EVERYBODY* ... you possibly can.

Thanks for that.

Yeah, I had it a couple of years back. I got a swollen spleen from it and had to stop all exercise. I had to stop martial arts because of it. (I was battling on even when I had it, without noticing anything out of the ordinary. It was only the spleen pain that stopped me. How's that?)

You're right. It is false in the fact that kissing is not the only place you can get it. You can get it from kissing but that's actually not the main source.
Mainly sharing drinks, food, and not washing your hands as often as needed in public places are main causes.

Well, I realized one thing; I thought my depression was starting to come back... but thinking back, it started coming back right around when the mono started, so there's a good chance I've just been making myself think it was that, when it was just being really fatigued from mono, etc.

Here's to hope, heh.

Ooh I got that when I was 16. Refused to lay down and let it pass tho, because my mum said that if I was ill I couldn't go to the Foo Fighters gig I'd been looking forward to :p So I battled on and made myself worse. Wasn't a good idea, messed me up for a while.

At least I didn't end up in hospital...friend of mine got it and was in hospital for weeks because her throat swelled up so much she couldn't eat.

Hey...least you have an excuse to stay at home and post on Nationstates all day.

My sister was diagnosed with mono at one point in time, but some stuff seemed strange. For example, she had an ear infection occur about a week into it, and the doctor gave her some anti-biotics for that. She started taking the anti-biotics and what the doctor called mono cleared up in under a week and a half. Which is odd, because mono is a virus, and viruses are unaffected by anti-biotics. Who knows.

Not really. I know I'm not sick enough to need to stay home indefidentally, and my parents know it too. I came home sick today, but I can't keep doing it.

Ugh. I had what we think was mono. It was nasty.

The reason those girls could stay healthy though, is that you only get "mono" in the traditional sense in your teens and earlyish adulthood. Younger and it usually passes as a cold or even with no symptoms, older and it can make big problems. 90% of adults have been exposed so now they carry the virus but are immune to it.

Sorry though. It must suck.

Yes, but both girls are right around my age...

Though, I think I might have actually given one of them mono... not sure.
