Supervillian mistakes

Why does he let the hero go? Why does he have an easily-reachable button that will destroy his painstakingly constructed doomsday weapon? Why not just shoot this sickeningly virtuous person and save yourself some trouble?
What do YOU think?

It wouldn't make a good comicbook or movie if the supervillain just flat out killed the villain. And the series or movie would die too.

because we only see the dumb villains in movies. no one makes movies about the villains that killed 001-005 and 008-00umpteen (don't quote me on those IDs).

As a corollary, i would point out that "Now you see, Lonestar, Evil will always Triumph, because Good is Dumb." Not that Dark Helmet fared any better, but the concept is there.

'Nuff said.

As for the why, let's say that it's their subconcious manifesting their deep desire to be beaten for one of two reasons.

1) they subconciously realize that what they are doing is wrong and they deserve to be beaten.

2) They don't actually want to rule the world, because really, what would they do with it?

I would outlaw and possibly destroy France if I ruled the world.

my theory is because of (to quote this kid i was sitting next to in the theater a year ago) "the power of the plot"

if you remember the orginal star wars and how all the bad guys missed at a range of 20 feet, it is because of the power of the plot, the indescribable force that allows villian's gun barrels to bend and oppositions to miss key details (like the fact that the good guy is a shapeshifter or something).

it's the thing that annoys me the most about games and movies and it's y i like MGS, because things rarely slide your way like that

perhaps it is the Power of the Schwartz to which you are referring...?

No, it's the narrative.

You see, it's really simple. All of that painstaking planning, all the time spent cajoling and cavorting, all those days spent at supervillain union meetings, countless bank robberies to fund your dastardly schemes, countless innocents crushed for the fun of it, all of these plans come to a head when you've got your superhero nemesis in front of you.

Only your hated enemy can truly appreciate all the work you put into defeating him. Because all the guys back at the supervillain union hall won't appreciate your efforts, because they're all after management positions.

well I'm sure the Schwartz has powers over the narrative too...

Nay, for it is subordinate.

No, no, no. That's the variable bullet-speed rule, where

BS=SP/IC

BS is bullet speed, SP is the standard physical constant for what a bullet should go given the amount and quality of powder, gun type, bullet caliber, wind speed, etc., and IC is the importance of the character. Basically, the speed of the bullet is inversely proportional to the importance of the character in the story.
